G U A N G Z H O U F L A S H erman Chamber of Commerce in China GZ Newsletter Jul/Aug/Sep 2006 / Issue no. 09 Guangzhou and Düsseldorf Sign conomic Cooperation Agreement Guangzhou Mayor Mr. Zhang Guangning met with Mr. Joachim rwin, Mayor of Düsseldorf, on July 25 th. Both parties signed an economic co-operation agreement to strengthen the cooperation in the fields of trade, tourism, culture, education and technology in the future in order to bring the relationship of the two cities to a new level. Mr. Zhang extended a warm welcome to his guests and praised Düsseldorf as the capital of one of the biggest German federal states located in the centre of urope and as a highly developed industrial city. With the agreement both cities have the opportunity to coordinate their economies and maximize opportunities in times of a challenging globalization. Both sides vowed to ensure that that concrete steps should be taken to enrich mutual benefit, to stimulate economic prosperity, and to encourage further personal contacts between the citizens of both cities. Mayor rwin said he was very confident about the cooperation between the two cities. The agreement is based on the long tradition of visits and the personal engagement of both cities mayors. In addition, the involvement of the China Competence Centrum (a private collaboration initiative based in Düsseldorf), Düsseldorf Messe and the German Chamber was mentioned. The visit of Mayor rwin in Guangzhou was followed by the first-time cooperation between the Canton Fair and the Düsseldorf Messe on the China Trade vents (September 13 th 15 th ). GCC All-China Board Meeting wraps up in Changchun The German Chamber of Commerce (GCC) All-China Board Meeting was held from Oct. 19-20 in Changchun. The main results of the meeting included the decision to launch a new chamber magazine. The magazine will be a joint undertaking of the chamber s Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shanghai chapters and will cover member news, information on key business topics as well as regional information. The first issue of the new publication shall appear in early 2007. The results of two surveys were also discussed. The survey on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) carried out by the GCC showed the variety of CSR activities in which local German companies are engaged in. Several of our member companies participated in this survey. The survey on energy shortage in the PRD carried out by the GCC in Guangzhou focused mainly on the production sector. The survey results underlined that the majority of member companies still experience power cuts that range from several hours to complete days. While in a midterm perspective most companies don t expect much improvement, the outlook on a longer time horizon is more positive. Another topic on the agenda related Guangdong Headlines: South China's largest shipbuilding base to be built in Nansha. Following the completion in 2008, the shipbuilding and repairing capacity of Guangzhou will increase from 60,000 tons to 300,000 tons and Longxue will become the largest modern shipbuilding base in South China. Guangzhou enters the clean energy era with the launch of a new natural gas engineering project. This cooperation project with Australia aims to ultimately serve 20,000 households. This autumn more than 2,000 apartments and 145 canteens became the first users. to the cooperation with the GCC in Hong Kong (HK). Against the background of increasing integration in the greater PRD, the board members discussed the possibility to grant HK equal status with the three chapters in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The board members decided to invite the GCCHK Board to the next meeting in order to follow up on the issue. The meeting was followed by a dinner with representatives of German enterprises from the region and a meeting with the Governor of Jilin Province, Mr. Wang Min, and other Officials. The next All-China Board meeting is to be organized by the GCC South China and scheduled for the spring of 2007 in Shenzhen. Shenzhen Headlines: The practice of replacing paper air tickets with e-tickets, which has been implemented across the globe, may save some 30 million yuan (US$3.75m) a year for airlines based in Shenzhen. This follows IATA s request of its 261 member airlines to abandon paper tickets by the end of 2007. SZ will implement trial measures on dealing swiftly with traffic accidents, and enforce compulsory auto-insurance. For minor traffic accidents with no human injuries and slight car damage, drivers can file a report to confirm the accident and move the vehicles to places that will not hinder traffic.
