School of Journalism & Communication Tsinghua University Beijing 100084 China Abstract There seems to be a brief trilogy in the social change and journalistic transformation of contemporary China intensive politicization in the 1980s the formation of de - politicized policy in the 1990s and the re - politicized process in the new century. From the perspective of political ideology this paper explores the tortuous arduous evolution of China s journalism and information - transmission since the end of Cultural Revolution. Furthermore complex social backgrounds have been brought together to better understand the dramatic transformation of journalism. This paper aims to sketch the outline of this evolution rooted in a broader social transformation an outline including ideological trajectories tracks of media coverage and according social contexts.
