The Science Department and Science Leadership in the People s Republic of China from 1951 to 1956 ZHANG Li College of Humanities & Social Sciences University of Chinese Academy of Sciences Beijing 100049 China ZHAO Tao The Institute for the History of Natural Sciences Chinese Academy of Sciences Beijing 100190 China Abstract The Science Department of the Central Propaganda Department 1951 ~ 1966 was an institution responsible for affairs in the field of science and had wide influence on science leadership in the early period of the People s Republic of China 1951 ~ 1956. The Science Department was established as part of the increasing power and expansion of the management scope of the Central Propaganda Department with the purpose of strengthening the Party s leadership of scientific work. Owing to the background of the Central Propaganda Department the Science Department took on a routine leadership function for scientific work such as the administration of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It was thus a very important element of the Party s leadership in the science field. In addition the Science Department participated in important historical events which related science policy and policy regarding intellectuals having a profound influence on some such events. Study of the Science Department helps us to understand how the Party directed science work and the relationship between science and politics after 1949.
