Abstract Based on the cases drawn from interviews this paper summarizes the major types and characteristics of the bizarre dress found in Guangdong during the Cultural Revolution and explicates the admonitory mechanism of the government with regard to individual attire giving particular analysis on political economic and cultural dimensions to the deep -layered reason for such an admonitory mechanism to be operable. The conclusion of this paper is garment norm and garment politics is an important measure used by the ruling authority to standardize society build up social consensus and establish the ruler s own political legitimacy.
