Key Laboratory of Hydraulic and Water Engineering of Ministry of Education Chongqing Jiaotong University Chongqing 400074 China Abstract Initial geo-stress is an important factor in geo-technical engineering numerical simulation and how to balance initial geo-stress in ABAQUS finite element software is the key to ensuring the validity of numerical calculation results. According to four kinds of different initial geo-stress balance methods provided by ABAQUS this paper separately uses examples to verify the practicability advantages and disadvantages of each method to conduct initial geo-stress balance and analysis results show that as for simple geo-technical the auto-balance method keywords initial geo-stress definition method ODB import method and initial geo-stress extraction method provided by ABAQUS can achieve the balance effect however with regard to geo-technical of complex geo-conditions only auto-balance method and initial geo-stress extraction method can obtain better balance effect. The research conclusion can present reference for numerical calculation of complicated geo-technical. Key words ABAQUS initial geo-stress balance
