Abstr act The monograph makes a serious study of the changes of Chinese farmers con-
viction during the significant social transformations in modern times. On the basis of the careful analysis about the subject the author attempts to clarify the course of change in ideology and conviction of Chinese farmers who constitute the main body of population indicating that social transformation can bring about a dynamic influence over the farmers inner world and ideological beliefs. The book is hoped to be a source of rational reflection on the modernization of Chinas countryside. The author introduces some related concepts of conviction like connotations featuresand functionswith a special emphasis on Chinese farmers beliefs in traditional feudal societies. Then the focus is shifted to the changes of these beliefs in times of several historical social transformationsand the social causes for the conviction evolution. The author observes these changes caused by the contemporary social transformation from various angles and takes a prospective view of the development of the farmers beliefs in the context of new century. The discussionunder the guidance of Marxism and other classic theories takes a diachronic macrocomparison and an instantaneous microperspective as its research methodsin combination with questionnaires and interviewsattempting to present a true picture of the farmers evolution and the status quoand provide a decision reference for farmers spiritual modeling in the new era. On the basis of the systematic description of the farmers convictionthe author argues thata positive faith is demanded in times of the social changes because an advanced cultural conviction can be a spiritual guide at the turn of social changes 2A correct handling is needed of the relation between faith pursuit and practice - the practice must correspond with the national and social realities. The practice of faith is bound to work negatively if it goes beyond or falls behind the reality 3Both of farmers material gains and spiritual pursuit are indispensable and ignorance of either will undermine the social transitionand4 To forge a healthyscientific and advanced conviction will enhance the sustaining political power and consolidate the primary organizationsas well as improve the integration of rural community.
