the period of 1950s replacing 1940s, which sets off CPC' s conviction of clearing away bawdry, the social cancer in the course of taking over city just after establishing PRC. At that time, since Tianjin was just liberated and its economy was in an unsteady state, too speedy close-down and reformation of bawdry would lead to an insolvable economic pressure for the government, which is the basic reason that the way of reforming bawdry in Tianjin is different with the way in Beijing and Shanghai. This paper gives a panoramic description of the principle of restricting and gradually reforming bawdry and the way of taking a forceful measure to settle itinerant prostitutes and unlicensed prostitutes in the thoroughly during the epoch of the new political power replacing the old one. The paper sums up experiences and lessons on reforming bawdry at that moment, which gives important enlightenment to resolve the same social problems today. Key words: Tianjin; bawdry; reformation
