Explanation of symbols The following symbols are used to classify and describe the level of hazard, injury, and property damage caused when the denotation is disregarded and improper use is performed. WARNING To prevent skin or health problems Persons using an implanted medical electronic device, such as a pacemaker, should not allow this unit to touch the skin where the medical electronic device is implanted. - Doing so may cause an accident or illness. 5 WARNING Do not damage or modify, or forcefully bend, pull, or twist the cord. Also, do not place anything heavy on or pinch the cord. Do not immerse the AC adaptor in water or wash it with water. Do not place the AC adaptor over or near water filled sink or bathtub. Never use the appliance if the AC adaptor is damaged or if the power plug fits loosely in a household outlet. - Doing so may cause electric shock or fire due to a short circuit. Do not use anything other than the supplied AC adaptor. Also, do not charge any other product with the supplied AC adaptor. - Doing so may cause burn or fire due to a short circuit. Do not use in a way exceeding the rating of the household outlet or the wiring. - Exceeding the rating by connecting too many plugs to one household outlet may cause fire due to overheating. Always ensure the appliance is operated on an electric power source matched to the rated voltage indicated on the AC adaptor. Regularly clean the power plug and the appliance plug to prevent dust from accumulating. - Failure to do so may cause fire due to insulation failure caused by humidity. The main unit, adaptor or cord smells of burning. There is abnormal sound during use or charging of the main unit, adaptor or cord. - Immediately request inspection or repair at an authorized service center. Take care of the following precautions as well Do not remove the lamp cartridge except during replacement. Do not touch the area when replacing the lamp cartridge. - Doing so may cause electric shock or fire due to a short circuit. This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety. Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance. - Failure to do so may cause an accident or injury. The supply cord cannot be replaced. If the cord is damaged, the AC adaptor should be scrapped. - Failure to do so may cause an accident or injury. 6

7 CAUTION To protect the skin The following persons should not use this appliance: Persons with dermatitis Persons suffering from atopic dermatitis or rashes and other skin diseases Persons with allergic diathesis, or sensitive skin which is easily irritated by cosmetics, clothing, metals, etc. Persons with skin that is sensitive to sunlight Do not use in the following body area: On suntanned skin Dark brown or black skin areas such as moles (Refer to the sheet for Suitable Hair and Skin Tones.) Scabs, injuries, rashes, bruises, warts, pimples, skin cancer, ringworm (dermatophytosis), folliculitis, irritated skin, insect bites, etc. Face and genitals Angioma Areas with cosmetic surgery Do not use in the following cases: When you are not well or when you feel an abnormality in your skin or body Do not use on the same area repeatedly, or use IPL hair removal more than 3 times per week. - Doing so may cause injury to the skin, inflammation, bleeding, increased pain or other problems or aggravated symptoms. Do not use a cracked lamp cartridge. - Doing so may cause injury to the skin. Do not remove the frame except during cleaning or lamp cartridge replacement. - Doing so may cause injury to the skin or fingers. Only for use by persons over the age of Failure to do so may cause injury or inflammation of the skin, bleeding or increased pain. Before use, check that there is no distortion, cracks or damage to the frame and flash window. - Failure to do so may cause injury to the skin. Persons on medication should consult a dermatologist. - Skin may become sensitive to light stimulation depending on the type of medication being taken, and may cause skin problems. If inflammation (such as skin turning red) occurs, stop using the appliance, and consult a dermatologist if the inflammation continues even after 2 days. - Failure to do so may cause symptoms to worsen. Power supply Do not allow pins or trash to adhere to the power plug or the appliance plug. - Doing so may cause electric shock or fire due to a short circuit. Do not wrap the cord around the adaptor when storing. - Doing so may cause the wire in the cord to break with the load, and may cause fire due to a short circuit. Disconnect the adaptor or the appliance plug by holding onto the adaptor or the appliance plug instead of the cord. - Disconnecting by holding onto the cord may cause electric shock or injury. Note the following precautions Do not use on clothes or head hair. - Doing so may cause burns or discoloration. Disposing of the rechargeable battery DANGER The rechargeable battery is exclusively for use with this appliance. Do not use the battery with other products. Do not charge the battery after it has been removed from the product. Do not throw into fire or apply heat. Do not hit, disassemble, modify, or puncture with a nail. Do not let the positive and negative terminals of the battery get in contact with each other through metallic objects. Do not carry or store the battery together with metallic jewellery such as necklaces and hairpins. Do not charge, use, or leave the battery where it will be exposed to high temperatures, such as under direct sunlight or near other sources of heat. Never peel off the tube. - Doing so may cause overheating, ignition, or explosion. WARNING After removing the rechargeable battery, do not keep it within reach of children and infants. - The battery will harm the body if accidentally swallowed. If this happens, consult a physician immediately. 8

9 SELECT WARNING Parts identification If the battery fluid leaks out, take the following procedures. Do not touch the battery with your bare hands. - The battery fluid may cause blindness if it comes in contact with your eyes. Do not rub your eyes. Wash immediately with clean water and consult a physician. - The battery fluid may cause inflammation or injury if it comes in contact with the skin or clothes. Wash it off thoroughly with clean water and consult a physician. SELECT English Intended use Use IPL hair removal only after removing excess hair. Emitting light without removing hair may cause hair to become trapped in the guard or flash window, and the dirt cannot be removed. Before use, wipe away any water or sweat from the treatment area, and any hair sticking to the skin first. Do not use thinner, benzene, alcohol, etc. to clean the appliance. Doing so may cause failure, cracking or discoloration of the main body. Wipe with a dry cloth. Do not leave the appliance in an area with high temperature. Doing so may cause malfunction. 10 English Treatment areas The appliance can be used on the areas. Guide for treatment frequency, time Treatment frequency Legs/Arms Use once every 2 weeks for the first 2 months. Use once every 4 weeks from the 3rd month onward. Underarms/Bikini line Use once every week for the first 2 months. Use once every 2 weeks from the 3rd month onward. Try using the appliance up to a maximum of 2 times per week even if removal of unwanted hair is not immediately obvious. (Treatment effects may differ depending on the area or individual body types.) If the appliance has not been used for a while, resume use at the same frequency as the first 2 months. Treatment time may differ depending on the area or amount of hair, treatment area and how the appliance is used. Please remove any unwanted hair first from the treatment area. Please use a separate razor or electric shaver. 10

11 The appliance differs from permanent hair removal treatment. Unwanted hair will gradually grow back if treatment is stopped. Charging Insert the appliance plug firmly into the socket at the bottom of the main body. Firmly insert the adaptor into a household outlet. Check that the charging indication/notification lamp glows. After charging is While charging completed Red light glows. Red light goes off. The charging time may differ when the appliance is being used for the first time, or if it has not been used for half a year or more. The lamp on the main body may not glow for several minutes after charging starts, but will glow if charging continues. Charging is completed in about 3 hours. The charging time may differ with the charging capacity <To check if charging is completed> Press the power switch with the AC adaptor connected. The charging indication/notification lamp glows, and goes off after approximately 5 seconds. Remove the adaptor from the household outlet, and remove the appliance plug from the main body. (for safety and to reduce energy usage) There will be no problems with the main body even if it is charged for 3 hours or more. The appliance can be used for approximately 600 flashes with a full single charge. The number of flashes may differ depending on the ambient temperature and how the appliance is used. Notes Recommended ambient temperature for charging is C. Charging may not be possible outside of the recommended temperature. Charging the appliance every time it is used will not affect the life of the rechargeable battery. If there is crackling noise on radios or other devices while charging, charge the appliance using a different household outlet. English 11

12 English Before use Do not use the appliance in dark places. Doing so may cause temporary irritation in the eyes. Please remove any unwanted hair first from the treatment area. Before use, wipe away any water or sweat from the treatment area, and any hair sticking to the skin. Otherwise, the dirt on the guard or flash window cannot be removed. When using the appliance for the first time Check that the output level suits your skin. Set the output level to 1 (LV1) and flash the treatment area once. After 2 days If there are no skin abnormalities Set the output level to 1 (LV1) and start treatment on the area that you want. Guide for treatment frequency, time (See page 10.) If there are no skin abnormalities After 2 weeks* *For armpits and bikini line: after 1 week To increase the output level for treatment, flash once on the treatment area, and check your skin condition for around 2 days before treatment. Increase the output level one step at a time. If there is intense pain or redness after 2 or more days, stop using the appliance and consult a dermatologist. <Output levels> Greater treatment effects LV5 LV4 LV3 LV2 LV1 Minimal pain or irritation How to use The power will not turn on even when pressing the switch with the AC adaptor connected to the main body. Recommended ambient temperature for operation is 5 35 C. The appliance might not be usable outside of the recommended temperature Remove the cap. Press and hold (for approximately 3 seconds) to turn the power on. The power will turn off automatically if the appliance is not used for approximately 1 minute. SELECT Press to select the output level. Level 1 is selected when the power is turned on. The level cycles through each time the level selector switch is pressed. The level indication lamp blinks, and then turns on. (A beep sounds, indicating that preparation for flash is complete.) 12

13 4 5 When the level indication lamp glows, apply the guard closely against the skin and keep it pressed until flashes. When the appliance beeps, press the head perpendicularly against the skin. Use the appliance after checking that there are no other people nearby. Points for IPL hair removal (See this page.) When the appliance beeps, preparation for flash is complete. Press to turn the power off. Points for proper IPL hair removal Point 1 Apply the guard perpendicularly against the skin and keep it pressed against the skin. The flash window will not flash unless it is applied perpendicularly to the skin. 90 Point 2 The size of the guard (part with grid pattern) is a guide for the IPL hair removal range of each flash. : IPL hair removal range of each flash When the appliance beeps, preparation for flash is complete. Continuous flashes After one flash, slide the appliance to the next flash area while it is still pressed against the skin. Up to 10 continuous flashes at an interval of approximately 3 seconds is possible. The flash window will no longer flash after 10 flashes. Remove the appliance from the skin and try again. Do not use the appliance continuously on the same area. English 13

14 English For healthy skin The following care is recommended after IPL hair removal. 1. Cool the skin using a towel soaked in ice water. 2. Moisturize the skin with the lotion etc. Less than flashes remaining until lamp cartridge replacement period Cartridge confirmation lamp (red) glows. There are less than flashes remaining until the lamp cartridge replacement period. Prepare a new lamp cartridge. (See pages 16 and 17.) Lamp cartridge replacement period The cartridge confirmation lamp (red) blinks (once/second), and the power turns off 5 seconds later. Lamp indication Normal indication The level indication lamp (blue) blinks (once/ second). The image on the left is when level 5 is selected. Preparation for flash in progress. The level indication lamp (blue) glows. The image on the left is when level 5 is selected. Charging notification IPL hair removal is not possible as the lamp cartridge replacement period is up. Replace the lamp cartridge. (See pages 16 and 17.) The charging indication/notification lamp (red) blinks (once/second). The battery level is low. Charging is recommended. Flashing is possible. 14

15 Malfunction display [Abnormal charging] The charging indication/notification lamp (red) blinks quickly (twice/second). Recommended ambient temperature for charging is C. Check the room temperature of the place where the appliance is going to be charged, and charge it again. [Cartridge] The cartridge confirmation lamp (red) blinks quickly (twice/second), the appliance emits a series of beeps, and the power turns off after 5 seconds. The lamp cartridge is not attached correctly. Attach the lamp cartridge correctly after checking that the appliance has been turned off. (See page 16.) [Other malfunctions] The level indication lamp (blue), cartridge confirmation lamp (red) and charging indication/notification lamp (red) blink simultaneously (once/second), the appliance beeps twice, and the power turns off after 5 seconds. Recommended ambient temperature for operation is 5 35 C. Check the room temperature of the place that the appliance is going to be used, and turn it on again. (The appliance may not adapt to the room temperature immediately after changing the location.) If the symptom occurs repeatedly, contact an authorized service center. English 15

16 English Cleaning Always turn the main body power off and wait for 2 to 3 minutes before cleaning. Flash window/frame Remove any trimmings on the guard or flash window. Failure to do so will make it difficult to remove the dirt, and will weaken the light. 1. Remove the frame. 2. Wipe any dirt clean carefully with a dry cloth. Flash window Frame/Guard Lamp cartridge replacement A guide for the lamp cartridge replacement is approximately 2 years when the appliance is used at the recommended frequency and time. The lamp cartridge replacement period is approximately flashes. Replacement period notification The cartridge confirmation lamp (red) glows when the power is turned on with less than approximately flashes remaining. The cartridge confirmation lamp (red) blinks when turning the power on if the lamp cartridge replacement interval has come. (See page 14.) Replacement and resetting of the lamp cartridge 1. Press to turn the power off. 2. Remove the lamp cartridge. 1 Remove the frame. 3. Attach the frame. Insert until it clicks. 2 Remove it by pulling it straight in the direction of the arrow. Do not use a lamp cartridge that has been used. (Doing so may cause damage to the lamp cartridge.) 16

17 3. Attach a new lamp cartridge. 1 Insert it straight in the direction of the arrow. Insert it firmly all the way in. 2 Attach the frame. Insert until it clicks. 4. Press and hold (for approximately 3 seconds) SELECT until the appliance beeps to reset it. Replacement is complete if the cartridge confirmation lamp (red) blinks twice and the alarm beeps. The power will not turn on unless the reset is completed. Notes Always reset the appliance immediately after replacing the lamp cartridge. (The appliance cannot be reset if too much time has passed since replacing the lamp cartridge.) If the reset operation cannot be completed, recharge the appliance, reattach the lamp cartridge again and reset the appliance. Replacement parts Replacement parts are available at your dealer or Service Center. Replacement lamp cartridge WES2W13 Q&A Question What type of light is emitted from the flash window? Why can the appliance be used only by those over the age of 18? Can the appliance be used in areas other than underarms, arms, legs or bikini-line? Is it alright to use the appliance everyday? Why is there a burning smell after a flash? The light feels very bright while using the appliance but is this a problem? Answer Instantaneous flash from a xenon lamp. This is because of unstable hormone balance when growing up and the skin can become sensitive easily. Only use the appliance on underarms, arms, legs or bikiniline. (Do not use the appliance on the face or other areas.) Using the appliance on the same area everyday is not recommended. Please follow the guide for treatment frequency and time. (See page 10.) This is because the flash applies heat to unwanted hair, and is not a sign of a malfunction. Remove any hair if it has grown too long. Also remove all trimmings remaining on the skin. Apply the flash switch closely against the skin. (See page 13.) If the light is still a concern, wear sunglasses or other eye protection. English 17

18 Question Answer The sensation is different for each person but it may feel hotter if hair has not been removed properly. Please shave any hair short before flashing. The treated skin may temporarily turn red or feel painful depending on the body type or condition of the person using the appliance. Stop using the appliance immediately, and keep the skin cool and moist. If the symptoms subside within 2 days, use the appliance at a level that the symptoms do not appear. If the symptoms persist after 2 days, consult a dermatologist. (See page 12.) If the dirt cannot be removed even after cleaning, the light will become weaker and the guard will need to be replaced. Contact the store where you purchased the unit or a service center authorized by Panasonic for repair. (Repair part: WESWH81P3107) Question Answer The cartridge confirmation lamp will flash when the lamp cartridge is attached/unattached but this is not a malfunction. Reset the appliance if the lamp cartridge has been replaced. (See page 16.) English The light feels hot while using the appliance but is this a problem? The treated skin turns red while using the appliance but is this a problem? The pain and redness do not subside after use but is this a problem? Dirt on the guard cannot be removed. Does the cartridge confirmation lamp flash when the level selector switch is pressed? Troubleshooting Problem The flash window does not flash. The flash preparation time is long. Action Check that the level indication lamp (blue) has changed from blinking to glowing. Press the flash switch perpendicularly against the skin until it flashes. (See page 13.) If 10 continuous flashes have been emitted, temporarily move the appliance away from the skin. If the cartridge confirmation lamp (red) is blinking, the lamp cartridge replacement period is up. Replace with a new lamp cartridge. (See pages 16 and 17.) The flash preparation time may become longer to prevent the main body from overheating. 18

19 Problem The power turned off after all lamps blinked and the appliance beeped twice. The power turned off after the cartridge confirmation lamp (red) blinked quickly (twice/second) and the appliance emitted a series of beeps. The power turned off after the cartridge confirmation lamp (red) blinked. The cartridge confirmation lamp (red) glows. The power turned off during use. The appliance can only be used a few times after charging. Action Recommended ambient temperature for operation is 5 35 C. The appliance might not be usable outside of the recommended temperature. (See page 15.) The lamp cartridge is not attached correctly. Attach the lamp cartridge correctly. (See page 16.) The lamp cartridge replacement period is up. Replace with a new lamp cartridge. (See pages 16 and 17.) The lamp cartridge replacement period is approaching. Prepare a new lamp cartridge. (See pages 16 and 17.) For safety reasons, the power will turn off automatically if the appliance is not used for approximately 1 minute after the power is turned on. Turn the power on again. The battery has reached the end of its life. (See this page.) Problem The appliance does not operate even after pressing the power switch. Action Press and hold the power switch (for approximately 3 seconds) when turning the power on. Charge the appliance. (See page 11.) If the problems still cannot be solved, contact the store where you purchased the unit or a service center authorized by Panasonic for repair. Battery life Approximately 3 years. If the operating time is significantly shorter even after a full charge, the battery has reached the end of its life. (The battery life may change due to usage and storage conditions.) The battery in this appliance is not intended to be replaced by consumers. Have the battery replaced by an authorized service center. Removing the built in rechargeable batteries Remove the built-in rechargeable batteries before disposing of the appliance. Please make sure that the batteries are disposed of at an officially designated location if there is one. This figure must only be used when disposing of the appliance, and must not be used to repair it. If you dismantle the appliance yourself, it may cause malfunction. Remove the appliance from the AC adaptor. If the appliance can be turned on and emit light, use it until the battery is depleted. Wait for at least 10 minutes after turning the power off before disassembling the appliance. English 19

20 English Perform steps 1 to 6 and lift the battery, and then remove it. Take care not to short circuit the positive and negative terminals of the removed battery, and insulate the terminals by applying tape to them. For environmental protection and recycling of materials This appliance contains Li ion batteries.
