A secondary definition describes tradition as "an inherited pattern of thought and action." Of itself, tradition is not necessarily a bad thing. For example, the authorship of several New Testament books (e. g. Mark) is given by tradition. Much of the history of the early church, after the close of the New Testament, comes to us by tradition. It is when tradition becomes a matter of doctrine, and when the doctrine overrides the teaching of Scripture, that error is introduced. Such was the case with the Jewish religion in Jesus' day. LESSON NOTES: Tradition of the Elders: The antagonists of Jesus were ever finding fault with Him. They looked for ways in which they might accuse Him of some wrong (Mark 3:2). So it was that Jesus was questioned on why His disciples violated the tradition of the elders by eating with unwashed hands (Matt. 15:2; Mark 7:2). This is not to say that the disciples ate with dirty hands, but rather that they did not follow the elaborate procedure of washing up to the elbows repeatedly as the tradition of the Jews had dictated. Such washing, and many other types of washing, had become a matter of religious principal (Mark 7:4). Nowhere in God's Law did such a requirement exist. Already, the disciples of Jesus had been liberated from this meaningless tradition. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables. 從市上來, 若不洗浴也不吃飯 ; 還有好些別的規矩, 他們歷代拘守, 就是洗杯 罐 銅器等物 ) Jesus did not answer this question directly. Instead, He asked a much more pertinent question of them. "Why;" He wondered, "do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?" They had established, by tradition only, a clever way in which a man could avoid his responsibility to his parents and thus violate God's commandment (Matt. 15:3). They had laid aside the commandment of God in favor of their own tradition. Matthew 15:3 But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? 耶穌回答說 : 你們為甚麼因著你們的遺傳犯神的誡命呢? Such conduct was prophesied by Isaiah when he spoke of a people who gave lip service to the Lord, but whose hearts were far from honoring Him (Isaiah 29:13). Jesus said that those who put tradition over God's Word are fulfilling Isaiah's prophecy. They are interested in a show of religion while their hearts are indifferent towards really serving God. Isaiah 29:13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men: 主說 : 因為這百姓親近我, 用嘴唇尊敬我, 心卻遠離我 ; 他們敬畏我, 不過是領受人的吩咐 It is Corban": The specific situation that Jesus brought up regarding their tradition had to do with the money or gift through which a man's parents would be supported, that is, that by which they "profited" from him (Mark 7:11). God's Word emphatically declared that a person was to honor his parents and those who cursed their parents were to be put to death (Mark 7:10; Exodus 20:12; 21:17). From the example which Jesus gave, it is clear He considered the honoring of parents to Include their support should such a situation arise. To underscore just how severely God judged the rebellious son who refused to honor his parents, His Law provided the death penalty for such an one (Deut. 21:18-21). According to them, this would free him from his obligation to his parents. Thus they made the Word of God "to none effect" through their tradition (Mark 7:13). This was but one of many such" loopholes" they had instituted by their tradition. He knew the Scriptures and lived by them. His accusers were never able to bring a specific charge against Jesus of violating the Law. This obedience to the Law included His regard for His mother. (His father is never mentioned after His twelfth birthday; it is assumed he died when Jesus was still a boy.) At the time of His crucifixion, in the midst of excruciating pain, Jesus took care of His mother by entrusting her to John (John 19:27). By example and deed, Jesus showed us how to honor our parents. He did not look for a way out of His responsibility. John 19:27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. 又對那門徒說 : 看, 你的母親! 從此, 那門徒就接他到自己家裡去了 Tradition is not something which was confined to the Jewish religion of Jesus' day. In our own day, the danger ever exists of putting man's tradition ahead of God's Law. This was one of the things that Martin Luther fought so strenuously and one of the issues behind the Pilgrims' desire to leave the established church. Tradition had replaced the pure Word of God. Tradition can replace God's Word only if a person is deliberately trying to circumvent God's Word or if the Word of God becomes a closed book. In the latter case, tradition rushes into the vacuum created by the 3

4 absence of God's Word. It is then that the precepts of men are used to teach the fear of God, as Isaiah says (29:13). This underscores the absolute importance of each person having access to the Bible for himself and using it. The danger which exists when the Bible is a closed book is so much greater than any misinterpretation which might occur by some earnest but unlearned soul reading the Bible for himself. This is one of the great blessings of the Reformation and of the invention of the printing press. We do not need to rely on the teachings of man. Each of us can find out God's will for us by ourselves by searching His Word. 4

14 Saturday: Deuteronomy 21: If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: 人若有頑梗悖逆的兒子, 不聽從父母的話, 他們雖懲治他, 他仍不聽從, 19 Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; 父母就要抓住他, 將他帶到本地的城門 本城的長老那裡, 20 And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. 對長老說 : 我們這兒子頑梗悖逆, 不聽從我們的話, 是貪食好酒的人 21 And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear. 本城的眾人就要用石頭將他打死 這樣, 就把那惡從你們中間除掉, 以色列眾人都要聽見害怕 22 And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree: 人若犯該死的罪, 被治死了, 你將他挂在木頭上, 23 His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance. 他的屍首不可留在木頭上過夜, 必要當日將他葬埋, 免得玷污了耶和華 你賜你為業之地 因為被挂的人是在神面前受咒詛的 神所 14

15 Sunday: John 19: And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King! 那日是預備逾越節的日子, 約有午正 彼拉多對猶太人說 : 看哪, 這是你們的王! 15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar. 他們喊著說 : 除掉他! 除掉他! 釘他在十字架上! 彼拉多說 : 我可以把你們的王釘十字架麼? 祭司長回答說 : 除了該撒, 我們沒有王 16 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away. 於是彼拉多將耶穌交給他們去釘十字架 17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: 他們就把耶穌帶了去 耶穌背著自己的十字架出來, 到了一個地方, 名叫髑髏地, 希伯來話叫各各他 18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. 他們就在那裡釘他在十字架上, 還有兩個人和他一同釘著, 一邊一個, 耶穌在中間 19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. 彼拉多又用牌子寫了一個名號, 安在十字架上, 寫的是 : 猶太人的王, 拿撒勒人耶穌 20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. 有許多猶太人念這名號 ; 因為耶穌被釘十字架的地方與城相近, 並且是用希伯來 羅馬 希利尼三樣文字寫的 21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. 猶太人的祭司長就對彼拉多說 : 不要寫猶太人的王, 要寫他自己說 : 我是猶太人的王 22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written. 彼拉多說 : 我所寫的, 我已經寫上了 23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. 兵丁既然將耶穌釘在十字架上, 就拿他的衣服分為四分, 每兵一分 ; 又拿他的裡衣, 這件裡衣原來沒有縫兒, 是上下一片織成的 24 They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled (Psalm 22:18), which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did. 他們就彼此說 : 我們不要撕開, 只要拈鬮, 看誰得著 這要應驗經上的話說 : 他們分了我的外衣, 為我的裡衣拈鬮 兵丁果然做了這事 15

16 25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. 站在耶穌十字架旁邊的, 有他母親與他母親的姊妹, 並革羅罷的妻子馬利亞, 和抹大拉的馬利亞 26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! 耶穌見母親和他所愛的那門徒站在旁邊, 就對他母親說 : 母親 ( 原文作婦人 ), 看, 你的兒子! 27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. 又對那門徒說 : 看, 你的母親! 從此, 那門徒就接他到自己家裡去了 16
