1 January, 2015 Vol.3 二零一五年一月第三期 NEWSLETTER MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD 2014 was an eventful and rewarding year for Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto (CCC). Not long ago CCC proudly hosted the second Toronto International Piano Competition. This quadrennial Canadian Music Olympics was made possible only with the strong commitments of our major sponsors, Celebrate Ontario funding and the support of a panel of internationally acclaimed jurors. The event not only showcased the talents of 20 elite young pianists from 10 countries selected out of over 100 entries, but also promoted Toronto as a vibrant artistic and cultural capital. The Scarborough Summerfest came to its third year, celebrating multiculturalism in a fun-filled and entertaining fashion with all walks of life in Scarborough and the neighbouring areas. CCC collaborated with a number of community organizations in this 3-day event in August, featuring an opening variety show with singing, dancing and jazz performance, Hakka Festival and TO Food Fest. We hope that the Summerfest can build stronger ties in our community and make it an annual attraction. The renowned Chung Ying Theatre Company from Hong Kong staged the awards winning Tuesdays with Morrie play by famous actors Dr. Chung Kai Fai and his student Chan Kwok Pong at P. C. Ho Theatre in July. Tickets to the first four shows were sold out fast. We are actively pursuing a rerun of the play should budget permit. With the support of the Consulate General of the People s Republic of China in Toronto, we jointly organized the Chinese Cultural Heritage Weekend with the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in its centennial celebrations. A wide array of activities including stage performances, on-site Chinese calligraphy and painting demonstrations, live Chinese music and piano playing, photos display and children arts and crafts attracted over 5,000 visitors to ROM during the weekend. To celebrate the Mid Autumn Moon Festival and raise funds for CCC, the newly retired and well-liked Consul General Fang Li and a number of celebrities took the stage at our Theatre with their talents in singing and cultural performances at the one-of-a-kind Sing for CCC Celebrity Concert. This project was another initiative launched after the Passing the Torch Chinese Culture Essay Competition held earlier. We also successfully held the 20th Imperial Ball fundraising gala themed Music Magic and signature community-wide free event Health Awareness Day. In the year, CCC received Ontario Trillium Foundation funding to upgrade our Theatre, including renewing and repairing the rigging, enhancing the lighting, replacing the projector and installing blinds for the upper Theatre lobby. We would like to thank all those who contributed to our developments and accomplishments in the year. 3 2nd Toronto International Piano Competition 第二屆多倫多國際鋼琴比賽 This quadrennial international music event was presented by Rolex Canada Ltd. with support from Steinway Gallery of Toronto, the Government of Ontario, corporate sponsors and private donors. More than 100 pianists submitted their entries to the Competition. In the final held on November 1 at Koerner Hall, three pianists performed concertos with the Toronto Concert Orchestra and Maestro Kerry Stratton. 23-year-old Yang Liu from China played the Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor by Tchaikovsky captured the first prize.
