THE BIG APPLE (1.8 Liters) 488 The Big Apple was popularized as a name for New York City by John J. Fitz Gerald in a number of horse-racing articles for the New York Morning Telegraph in the 1920s. The earliest of these was a casual reference on 3rd May, 1921. This is one to sip when under the thrall of a dark and hazy speakeasy. BREAD BASKET SOUR 108 One of America s favorite spirits, whiskey, combines with a bright fruity blend of blackberries and lemon juice in this contemporary cocktail created for the Smithsonian s Raise a Glass to History. THE ST. REGIS FRENCH 75 168 The St Regis French 75 s, history is as murky as the morning after drinking a few: some believe it to be one of the few cocktails actually created during Prohibition, while others think it got its first pour as early as the Victorian era. MANHATTAN 108 It s rumored that the Manhattan was first stirred up at the Manhattan Club in New York City in 1874. Legend has it, the drink was designed for a party thrown there by Jennie Jerome (Winston Churchill s mother). MINT JULEP 108 The mix of bourbon, mint and sugar. Originated in the South sometime in the 1700s and gained massive popularity in 1938 when it first became the signature drink of the Kentucky Derby. OLD FASHIONED 108 Known as the first true cocktail, the Old-Fashioned has gone through many incarnations since it first emerged in the early 1800s, from extra-fruity to kicked up with liqueur. But the basic mix of whiskey, Angostura bitters, sugar and a few dashes of water has outlasted all of the trends. OLD TRADITIONED 108 Another version of old-fashioned cocktail, cointaining Spiced Rum, honey and orange bitters. It became the new trend of new trend of old traditioned classic drinks. SOUTHSIDE 108 One story is that the Southside got its name thanks to (in true 1920s fashion) some gangsters on the South Side of Chicago looking for a way to cover up their not-so-great hooch, and then somehow morphed into the drink of choice at waspy East Coast country clubs thanks to its summer-y nature. SAZERAC 108 The stiff mix of rye whiskey or, as it was originally made, Cognac, bitters, sugar and absinthe is the official cocktail of New Orleans. THIS CONFLAGRATION NATION 108 Duncan Nicol, owner of San Francisco s legendary Bank Exchange bar, invented the pisco punch in the late 1800s.
