1. INTRODUCTION This manual is for both the IEEE 1394 PCI Host Adapter and IEEE 1394 Cardbus PcCard. With different host side bus - PCI & Cardbus, they all have connections to the high performance serial bus IEEE1394. They are designed to the provisions of the IEEE 1394-1995, P1394a, and OpenHCI enhancements. Up to three independent ports, up to 400 Mb/s data rate, hot-plugging, are provided for the maximum peripheral connections. These features and the low-system cost make them the deal interconnection for numerous IEEE 1394 computer networks, multimedia devices, and consumer electronics. The primary application of the 1394 is the integration of I/O connectivity at the back panel of personal computers using a low-cost, scalable, high-speed serial interface. Check the diagram at next for the connections. 1394 PCI & Cardbus User s Manual 1
2. 1394 BASICS 1394 is designed to function as both a cable-connected virtual bus and as a backplane bus achieves speeds up to 400 Mbps. Higher speeds in the range of one gigabits-per-second are possible in the future. This type of performance has enabled many new PC applications such as real-time digital video. When compared with older serial and parallel I/O buses, 1394 offers a rich set of advanced features, including live connection/disconnection of devices onto a 1394-based cable I/O system or of boards into a 1394-based backplane. The standard also supports both asynchronous and isochronous forms of communication on the same system. Whereas isochronous communication can be used to guarantee bandwidth for certain time-critical applications like streaming video or audio, asynchronous communication is appropriate for the typical PC peripherals such as printers or disk drives. The topology of a 1394 network resembles a tree structure. Each node on a 1394 network functions as a repeater, forwarding the signals on to the next node in the daisy-chain. As many as 63 nodes and 64,000 devices can be configured in a 1394 network. Because of its high-capacity bandwidth and advanced features, 1394 has the ability to consolidate many older standards and I/O methods into one unified, high-performance serial bus. On systems and products from Sony, Panasonic, JVC, Canon and Sharp, 1394 goes by the name of i.link, while Apple Computer refers to it as FireWire. This manual is for 1394 PCI Host Adapter and Cardbus PcCard with the following different chip set such as Ti, Agere, VIA. The chip vendors are different, but the functions are all the same. All the installations are similar. 2 1394 PCI & Cardbus User s Manual
