New York : John Wiley, SUL FUR ISOTOPIC COMPOSITIONS AND ENVIRONMENTAL GEOCHEMISTRY OF SURFACE WATER IN BEIJING D ISTRICT Chu Xuelei ( Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing ) Abstract For the city zone and far2forth suburb in Beijing, analytical results of sulfur isotopes of the 1994 surface water have been reported first in this paper, these data,with analytical re2 sults of Cl -, SO 2-4, and NO - 3 concent rations, will provide valuable information on source of surface water, effect on surface water f rom human activity and valley environmental geochem2 istry in Beijing district.

11 1 : 97 In 1994, all of the samples of surface water were collected monthly in the five locations of suburb Miyun county and city zone, Shisha Lake, of Beijing district. In Beijing district, the 34 S values of annual surface water ranged approximately from 6 to 10 and varied with season, i. e., maximum in February and minimum in Septem2 ber. All the 34 S values of surface water of Miyun and Shisha Lake were higher than 6. 1, the 34 S value of meteoric water in this district. For Shisha Lake in city zone, however, the SO 2-4 concent rations varied largely wit h season. Specially, t he concent ration increased contin2 uously up to near 39mg/ L during August and September, but decreased suddenly in October similarly to the variation of Cl - concentration. In Chao River of Xinzhuang, annual concen2 trations of NO - 3 were higher,10 25mg/ L, that will be related to ecological and geographical environment of upriver of Chao River. Excrement s, urine and nit rogen fertilizer released or used by human being will cause increase of NO - 3 concent rations in Chao River. For the surface waters of Miyun area and Shisha Lake in 1994, the measured concentra2 tions of Cl -, SO 2 4 -, and NO3 - and 34 S values of sulfates indicate that the surface waters de2 rive mainly from the meteoric water in the district. The fact that the 34 S values of Bai and Chao Rivers all were higher than the value of meteoric water in the area of Miyun Reservoir reflects a little amount of supply from ground water. For the surface waters in Beijing dis2 trict, in general, the sulfur compositions possess aseasonal variation of heavier in winter and lighter in summer ; annual 34 S values varied between 6 and 10 that is concordant with the regional differentiation observed by the previous, in which the 34 S value of meteoric wa2 ter is negative in the south part of China, but it is positive in the north part. A large amount of biogenic sulf ur release should affect on concent ration and isotopic composition of sulf ur in at mosphere and surface water ; biogenic sulf ur released f rom aquatic environment occupying a majority of surface of the Earth is an important source. Thus,biogenic sulfur not only controls seasonal variation of sulf ur isotopic compositions in at mosphere and surface water, but also possibly becomes a major reason resulting in t he regional differentiation of sulf ur isotopic com2 positions. In the Shisha Lake of city zone, the SO 2-4 concent rations kept continuously higher, but the 34 S values were lower in the surface water since the midsummer. In view of this fact, the biogenic sulfur, which was released by a large amount of cultivated aquatic plants from bloom to decay, may be a major reason resulting in the lower isotopic compositions until win2 ter, but combustion of coals in city zone could not cause so significant variation of sulfur iso2 topic compositions in the lake in winter.
