FROM THE PASTOR S DESK This Second Sunday of Easter is Divine Mercy Sunday, which is a celebra on of the abundant mercy that flows from the heart of Christ, our risen Lord.

3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK This Second Sunday of Easter is Divine Mercy Sunday, which is a celebra on of the abundant mercy that flows from the heart of Christ, our risen Lord. The gospel for this weekend is the story of our Savior s appearance to his disciples behind locked doors shortly a er the Resurrec on. They were hidden away in a secret loca on, huddled together in fear of the religious leaders who cooperated with Roman authori es in the trial and eventual crucifixion of their Master, Jesus. The glorified Christ s message to his followers is Peace be with you, as he shows them the wounds he sustained in his hands and side during his Passion. The Lord then breathes the Holy Spirit on them and empowers them to forgive sins in his name: Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained, words that in effect ins tute the Sacrament of Reconcilia on. One of the twelve apostles, Thomas, was a no-show at this appearance of the risen Lord, and when he hears his fellow disciples marveling at their post-easter encounter with Jesus, Thomas balks. He refuses to believe that Jesus is alive, un l he sees and touches the nail and spear marks on Jesus body. As it turns out, Thomas needed to experience for himself with his own senses the bodily resurrec on of Christ. A er he examines and verifies the iden ty of the risen Lord, Thomas, u ers his famous affirma on of faith: My Lord and my God! No ce, Jesus does not reject or shun Thomas because of his ini al unbelief. In his mercy, Jesus provides Thomas with the evidence he needs to come to faith in the Resurrec on. The devo on of Divine Mercy is based on the visions and mys cal experience of St. Maria Faus na Kowalska, a Polish nun in the twen eth century. Here is what Pope Saint John Paul II once said about Divine Mercy: All the subtle es of love become manifest in the Lord s mercy towards those who are his own: he is their Father.Mercy is the content of in macy with their Lord, the content of their dialogue with him. May we always rejoice in the Lord for his mercy endures forever! News and Notes: Divine Mercy Sunday Join us for our annual Divine Mercy service this a ernoon at St. Maria Gore Church at 2PM. The service will include Eucharis c Adora on, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, Music, and the opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconcilia on. According to the Decree of Indulgence issued by Pope Saint John Paul II in 2002, the faithful who fulfill the prescribed condi ons for Divine Mercy Sunday will receive a plenary indulgence (which is a full remission of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven). These condi ons include the usual requirements for any indulgence: sacramental confession, recep on of Holy Communion and prayer for the inten ons of the Pope. They also s pulate that in any church or chapel, the faithful par cipate in prayers and devo ons held in honor of Divine Mercy, or in the presence of the Eucharist, exposed or reserved, the faithful pray the Our Father, recite the Creed, and add a devo onal prayer to Divine Mercy, such as Merciful Jesus, I trust in you Catholic Appeal Update Here is the latest 2018 Catholic Appeal update: as of March 30, SMG parishioners had pledged $27,180, which is 72% of their goal; and OLA parishioners had pledged $41,270, which is 66% of their goal. If you have not yet made a pledge to this year s Catholic Appeal, please do so either by filling out a pledge card you ll find at the front entrances of our churches and place it in the collec on basket at Mass, or by going online to to offer your support to the 50+ Central Ministries of the Catholic Church in Eastern Massachuse s as well as your own parish.
