2 To assess the threat status of reptiles and other vertebrates in China, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Chinese Academy of Sciences initiated one project compiling a China Biodiversity Red List Vertebrates in 2012.

21 2.Threatened endemic reptiles in China The total number of reptiles endemic to China is 143; There were 39 species of endemic reptiles in China identified as endangered, which were 27.27% and 28.47% of the total number of reptiles endemic to China (143) and threated species (137), respectively.
