English Language 1. Objectives The overall aims of the English Language curriculum are: To provide every learner of English with further opportunities for extending their knowledge and experience of the cultures of other people as well as opportunities for personal and intellectual development, further studies, pleasure and work in the English medium; and To enable every learner to prepare for the changing socio-economic demands resulting from advances in information technology (IT) demands which include the interpretation, use and production of texts for pleasure, study and work in the English medium. 2. Curriculum The senior secondary English Language curriculum consists of a Compulsory Part and an Elective Part. Both parts include the learning of English Language in the Interpersonal, Knowledge and Experience Strands. Up to 75% of lesson time is allocated to the learning and teaching of the Compulsory Part. Below are some of the suggested modules: i. Study, School Life and Work ii. Cultures of the World iii. Nature and Environment iv. The Individual and Society v. Communicating vi. Technology vii. Leisure and Entertainment The Elective Part takes up about 25% of lesson time. The proposed modules in the Elective Part are as follows: Language Arts i. Learning English through Drama ii. Learning English through Popular Culture Non-language Arts iii. Learning English through Social Issues iv. Learning English through Workplace Communication 3. Assessment Components Weighting Paper 1 Reading 20% Paper 2 Writing 25% Part A 10% Part B 15% Paper 3 Listening & 30% Integrated Skills Paper 4 Speaking 10% School-based Assessment (SBA) Part A Part B Details Requirements 15% 10% Two assessments : group interaction and individual presentation (report two marks).
