By the Way... This Sunday marks the beginning of Daylight Savings Time. On Saturday night everyone should move their clocks ahead by one hour. We continue this week through Thursday with our special Novena to Saint Joseph during the Year of Saint Joseph. Each day through the 18 th we will pray together the Litany of Saint Joseph at the end of every Mass. I invite you to join us either live stream or privately as we honor the Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Friday, March 19 is the Solemnity of Saint Joseph. Due to the special nature of this year s celebrations in honor of Saint Joseph the obligation to abstain from meat this Friday is dispensed. One of the liturgical details that differentiates the Lenten Season from the rest of the liturgical year is the Prayer over the People. Other Sundays and solemn feasts of the year provide for an optional extended Solemn Blessing, but Lent is the only time of the year that provides a Prayer over the People for every day of the season, which, on Sundays at least, is mandatory. What is the origin of these prayers, unique to the Lenten Season. Weekday Mass as we know it today, has its origin in the early 4 th century custom at Rome of the stational churches. This custom involved the whole Christian community of the city (or at least representatives of it) marching in procession each day of Lent to a different church of the city and there being met by the Pope, who would lead the congregation in Mass. These daily processions to churches in different parts of the city were a way of bringing the Church into the public square, making faith visible in the daily life of the city. Because these stational Masses often began around 3:00 P.M. it would be getting dark by the time the congregation dispersed to go to their homes in the different parts of the city. This brought about the custom of the Pope praying a prayer over the people asking for their safety and protection as they made their way through the darkened streets of the city. Even today, these prayers are beautifully written (and translated) and express various aspects of God s care and concern for us. Today s prayer, for example, asks God, to give life by your unfailing light to those who walk in the shadow of death, and bring those rescued by your mercy from every evil. The Prayers over the People make for good Lenten meditation all throughout the season. Wednesday Night with the Saints this topic for this week s presentation is Saint Jerome. Please join us either live in church at 7:30, or live stream. Confessions the Sacrament of Penance is offered every Monday night of Lent in every church of the Paterson Diocese (Passaic Morris Sussex Counties) from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. The Sacrament is also available on Saturday afternoons from 4:30 to 5:15 P.M. On April 3, the Saturday before Easter, Marie Zigarelli will observe her 100 th birthday! For many years Marie was the parishioner who fashioned the Baptismal Robes for the infants being baptized at our font. Happy Birthday, Marie.
