4 Anatomical and Histological Study of Babylonia formosae Habei Li Mingzhu Supervised by Prof. Zhou Shiqiang and Dr. Ke Caihuan Abstract The thesis is about the digestive system and nervous system of Babylonia formosae Habei. We have made an exhaustive research about it by means of shape dissection and section of tissues for microscopic examination. The main results are as follows: 1.The alimentary canal of Babylonia formosae Habei is composed of mouth larynx, esophagus, stomach, intestines and anus in order. There is a magnanimous crop in the head of esophagus. The alimentary canal turns at the stomach and goes along. The intestine is wide and straight. There are ridges, which extends along the alimentary canal, in the internal surface of esophagus, stomach and intestine. These ridges are similar in outward appearance but their structure of tissue and composition of cell have great difference. The muscular folding proboscis, which turns in side, lies in the ahead of larynx. 2. There is a radula sac, which is under larynx, behind proboscis cavity. The radula wraps radula cartilage and can extend into proboscis cavity to cut and scrape food. The tooth formula is Teeth are fewer but strong. There are three central teeth which assume to be the teeth, and two pairs of edge teeth which assume to be the form of sickle and is big outside and small inside. 3. The digestive gland includes a pair of asymmetric salivary gland and one liver. The right salivary gland is bigger than the left. The salivary duct opens in the proboscis cavity. The salivary gland is archetypal gland shaped like a bulb. The duct is thin and long. There are a great deal of cilium in the internal side of gland cavity and duct. The section of tissue indicates that salivary gland is full of a great amount of mucus cell which Babylonia formosae Habei. The liver is the biggest digestive gland and has a liver duct which lead to stomach. Its tissue assumes to be the form of block and the structure of cells is not obvious. 4. Leiblein is a long duct with thin membrane and sends out many branches shaped like trees, which cover the surface of esophagus. The end of gland duct extends into stomach. The section of tissue shows that the gland duct has many adipose cells but has no secretary cells. That indicates Leiblein maybe act as an organ transferring nutrition, not as a digestive gland. 5. Central nerve system includes a pair of cerebral ganglions, a pair of buccal ganglions, a pair of pleural ganglions, a pair of pedal ganglions, three pleurovisceral ganglions, and also includes the nerve commissure between the ganglions.

5 6.The suppleurovisceral ganglion is composed of supraoesophageal ganglion, subintestinal ganglion, supintestinal ganglion which are apart from each other. The nerve commissure ring, which consists of left pleural ganglion, supraoesophageal ganglion, subintestinal ganglion, supintestinal ganglion, right pleural ganglion, turns around like the special form of "8". 7. Observing tissue indicates that nerve ganglion is composed of ganglionic sheath, cell-body region and neuropile. The sheath connects with nerve and connective tissue sheath of nerve commissure. The sheath is divided into two layers. The outside layer is a thick adipose tissue membrane and the inside layer is a thin nerve muscle stratum. The sheath can protect its internal nerve cell-body. Cell-body region is the area where nerve cells concentrate. Nerve cells belong to single-stage type. The neuropile is the region where nerves concentrate and protrude. The nerve fiber assumes to be the form of the net. 8. Sense organs include tentacle, eyes, osphradium and proboscis. The osphradium, which is in the right of branchia, lies behind the siphone, and is a sensory body like a spindle. The central axis is osphradial nerve. There is a great deal of sensory cilium in both sides of it. The eyes, whose structure is fully closed, lies in the base of tentacle. They have crystalline lens, vitreous body and retina. The tentacle lies in the top of the head. There is sensory cilium in some area of its surface and a great deal of nerve fiber under the epidermis. 9. There is a brandchia in the left side of external cavity. The pericardial cavity, which lies behind the branchia, has on auricle and on ventricle. The kidney, which lies in the right side of the pericardial cavity, has a duct in the left connected with the pericardial cavity. Its internal surface is the shape of honeycomb-like thing. There is a bigger kidney cavity with a kidney door in the head in it.
