1 VISA INSTRUCTIONS: TOURIST (L TOURISM VISA) This visa packet will provide you with information on how to apply for your visa. We work with CIBT, a visa processing agency, to assist students in obtaining a visa. If you already have a valid Chinese visa, skip ahead to the Special Circumstances section of this packet You will need to submit your actual passport with the visa application, therefore we recommend that you DO NOT make international travel plans before the program begins, as you may not have access to your passport. If extenuating circumstances require you to travel before the program begins, please contact Middlebury to discuss your options.

2 Step 1: Receive Your Visa Supporting Document You cannot apply for your visa until you receive the visa supporting document. The host university in China will prepare this document, a Proof of Housing, and them about 8-10 weeks before your program begins. CET will the Proof of Housing document to you. Notes about your Proof of Housing When received, please make sure the personal information on your Proof of Housing matches your passport. If there is a discrepancy, contact your CET Student Services Coordinator immediately. Print your Proof of Housing in color. You will submit the Proof of Housing to CIBT as part of your visa application. Step 2: Start Your Visa Order with CIBT CET works with CIBT, a third-party visa processing agency, to assist you in obtaining a visa. You will use the link below to start your visa order with CIBT. After completing your order, you will be required to mail to CIBT your Proof of Housing and any other supporting documentation they request. CET will cover most visa fees for students applying through CIBT. These costs include: Standard China Consular fee In-bound shipping via FedEx (label provided by CIBT) Return shipping via UPS weekday service Visa photo upload Electronic scan of your visa CIBT standard service fee *CET will NOT cover the cost of expedited processing. Please allow yourself ample time when applying to avoid incurring these extra costs. Important Notice: Some students may have to apply at their local consulate in person due to extenuating circumstances and/or a change in Chinese bureaucratic regulations. Please be sure to read through the visa application requirements and instructions for your specific consulate before beginning this process. You can find your local consulate information here. The estimated cost could be $140-$200 (excluding travel expense), so please keep this in mind when you are budgeting for your visa costs.

You should follow the sample China Visa Application on the next page and answer all questions according to CET s recommended responses. Forms must be typed (not handwritten) and in black font. Write for any sections that are not applicable and do not leave a response blank. Please be sure to read through the Special Circumstances section in this packet while you are filling out the V It will be easiest to read through this form by downloading and viewing it on a computer or laptop. 8 Step 4: Collect Your Materials Visa application requirements vary by consulate and are subject to change without notice. If applying through CIBT, you will be taken to a screen summarizing all of the requirements for your visa. If applying independently, please use your local consulate to ensure that you have all of the necessary materials for your visa application Most consulates require the following items: Completed Visa Application Form V.2013 (see the sample application on the previous page) Did you type in all caps? Is it printed in black ink? Do you have a live signature and date on page 4 in blue or black ink? Proof of Housing (CET will this to you) Did you print in color? Does the information in your Proof of Housing match your passport exactly? Your official passport Is your passport signed? Is it valid for six months after the program ends? Did you include a color photocopy of the photo page of your passport? Passport photo* Did you check with CIBT or your consulate to make sure your photo meets the requirements? Is the photo adhered to page 1 of the V.2013 form? (if applying through CIBT, you can upload a digital photo and they will print and cut it out for you.) *Passport photo requirements have recently changed for some consulates. Visa applications have been rejected due to issues with passport photos alone therefore please make sure your photo meets the requirements. Roundtrip flight itinerary Does your itinerary include your arrival and departure dates? Does it show the amount paid? Some consulates also require additional items, which may include: Proof of residency (state ID or driver s license) Step 5: Submit Your Application Complete your CIBT Visa Application Upload your visa photo in your CIBT account Confirm that you have all required visa documentation, and mail to CIBT using the shipping label provided by CIBT. 9 Special Circumstances If you already have a valid Chinese visa, you should reach out to CET as soon as possible with a scan of your current visa. Upon receiving your visa scan, CET will confirm with the host university if your current visa can be used for the upcoming program. If you were born in China, the consulate will require additional information for your application, including but not limited to your original Chinese passport, documentation of name change, and prior visas to China. Please check with CIBT or the consulate for specific requirements. List your name in Chinese characters in section 1.2 of the visa application as listed on your birth certificate. If you were born in Taiwan, list your name in Chinese characters in section 1.2 of the visa application as listed on your birth certificate. Please enter China (not Taiwan ) for your Former Nationality and Taiwan (not China or ROC ) as your Place of Birth on your visa application. If you were born in Hong Kong SAR, list your name in Chinese characters in section 1.2 of the visa application as listed on your birth certificate. Please enter China (not Hong Kong SAR ) for your Former Nationality and Hong Kong SAR (not China or ROC ) as your Place of Birth on your visa application. If you or your family are of Tibetan heritage or if you have a traditional Tibetan name, please contact CET immediately as this may affect your visa processing time. If you are not a US Citizen but reside in the US, you will normally be required to provide originals and copies of your residency permit or visa and I-20 form. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) require re-entry documents for some foreign nationals. If you are living in the US but are a citizen of another country, check with USCIS to determine the regulations that apply to you and be sure to obtain all necessary re-entry documents before you leave the United States. If your parents work with the State Department or journalism, contact CET for further instruction before submitting your visa application. If you currently reside in any country outside the United States and Canada, you are not able apply through CIBT and are responsible for obtaining your own visa. To do so, check the requirements of the Chinese Embassy in the country in which you reside. Most likely you will need a valid passport, a completed Visa Application Form (see guidelines on page 4 if your embassy uses Form V.2013) and a Proof of Housing. Please use the Embassy of China in your country as the authority on specific forms and instructions. If you are a Shanghai internship student, upon arrival in Shanghai, you will need to complete a medical exam and convert your visa to a residence permit. Bring your Proof of Housing with you to convert your visa. Overseas staff will guide you through this process. You will be responsible for the fee, which is about $185. This step does not apply to Beijing internship students or to students on other CET programs. After your visa is issued from the consulate, check that you received your original JW202 form and Admissions Notice/Invitation Letter along with your returned passport. If the documents are not returned to you, contact CET immediately.

10 Visa Restrictions and Specifications AFTER YOU VE RECEIVED YOUR VISA Can I travel in China after the program is over? It depends. If you are planning post-program travel, know that you are responsible for obtaining your own visa extensions if necessary. You are also responsible for any associated costs. It may or may not be possible to apply for such an extension while in China, according to local visa laws. How long will my visa be valid? CET guarantees that your visa will be valid for your program dates. If you are planning on staying in China beyond the end of the program, plan to make your own arrangements to renew your visa. This may include leaving the country (generally to Hong Kong) in order to get a new visa. What kind of visa will I receive? You will apply for a tourist L visa. Tourist visas are usually issued for stays in China under 60 days. Occasionally the consulate will issue an F or S visa. Please contact CET if you have not been issued an L tourist visa upon receiving your passport and visa back from the consulate. Even though we instruct you to apply for a multiple-entry visa, the consulate makes final determination of type of visa issued. Some consulates are not currently issuing multiple-entry visas. Once you receive your visa, please make sure that you are aware of the number of entries allowed.
