20 Abstracts Connections and Dynamics between South Asian Strategies China and America By Zhu Cuiping ABSTRACT Both China and the United States place great importance upon their strategic influence in South Asia. China s strategic objectives in South Asia are maintaining the security of transportation channels promoting regional stability and enhancing cooperation. In contrast in addition to overcoming the security dilemma and enhancing its influence in the region America also maintains strategic objectives in South Asia targeted at China. As states external to the region with profound influence on its geopolitics China and the US have South Asia strategies which are both related to and interact with one another. These dynamics not only result in greater strategic competition between the two states but also increase the complexity of South Asian politics. That said China and the U. S. maintain shared interests and concerns in South Asia and have a need for cooperation. If America can avoid the use of destructive force in the region and cooperate with China to develop a constructive force the two states will see a rapid expansion of space for collaboration. This will prove to be positive both for regional stability and for the enhancement of political trust and cooperation between the US and China more broadly.
