7 North Meets South page 7 Forward I ( Welcome! After all the hard work, the North Meets South concert is finally here. Since the year 2001, the Edmonton Chinese Philharmonica has organized numerous concerts. Each one of them carries a unique theme. The 2002 concert displayed the beauty of Pipa and reed instruments. The 2004 concert related our music to landscapes. The 2006 concert used a large proportion of percussion music. In 2007, we paid tribute to our young musicians. This year, we bring to you a fair number of Cantonese pieces. Cantonese music is well known for its delicate ornamental notes, varied rhythms and fluent melodies. On the other hand, we retain some compositions originated from other regions of China. We hope that the fusion of Northern and Southern music will give a refreshing sensation. We are extremely pleased that we invited the world renowned Gaohu master Mr. Chen Guo-chan to perform at this concert. Chen s fiddling is skillful, refined and profound. He will be accompanied by two plucking performers Ms. Macie Ho and Ms. Calla Tan. The three of them perform with seamless cooperation. Their music is elegant and sophisticated, yet natural and seemingly effortless. They will certainly bring lots of excitement to you this evening. We are very fortunate that we have also invited the famous Sheng performer, Mr. Eddie Yu, from the B.C. Chinese Orchestra, to come to perform with us. His instrument will tremendously enrich the colour of our sound. Eddie and I used to play for the Hong Kong Wang Kwong Chinese Orchestra more than 20 years ago. It will be a wonderful experience for me to play Chinese music with him again in Edmonton. I sincerely thank all the sponsors, guests, volunteers, and those of you who come to the concert tonight. 8 North Meets South page 8 Forward II ( There is a wide spectrum of traditional Chinese music, be it music from Mongolia, Tibet, Su Hang, Jie Jiang, Beijing, Guang Dong, Guang Si etc. This year is the seventh anniversary of the Edmonton Chinese Philharmonica and the theme of our concert tonight is North Meets South. In this concert, we shall be playing music from northern and southern China. For southern music, we shall be playing the style of Guang Dong Music and for northern music, we shall be playing the style of Traditional Mu- (Continued on page 9)

We are please to have invited from Toronto Gaohu master Chen Guo-chan, Pipa professional Macie Ho and Yang Qin professional Calla Tan to perform at this concert. The joint performance of our orchestra with such high caliber world class musicians shall for sure benefits our orchestra immensely both in terms of techniques and interpretations. We have also invited Sheng musician Mr. Eddie Yu from Vancouver to perform in this concert as guest musician. We have chosen Winspear Center as our concert hall this time for its wonderful acoustic and sound effects. We have to give special thanks to all the orchestra members, executive members and volunteers for helping out in the planning, organizing and implementing of this concert. 13 North Meets South page 13 About the Edmonton Chinese Philharmonica About the Edmonton Chinese Philharmonica Association: ECPA is a non-profit organization in Alberta registered under the Society Acts in the year Through public performances and continuous education of our members, our Association strives to: 1. Assist charitable and non-profit organizations in their activities and fund raising efforts; 2. Unite individuals who are interested in Chinese Traditional Music; 3. Promote cultural exchanges; 4. Cultivate the younger generation in their interest in Chinese Traditional Music. In the past seven years, including the current concert, the Orchestra had given five major concerts, namely: Oct String and Wind Instruments Concert we invited the music master Liu Dehai and Song Bao Cai from China to perform with the Orchestra. Mr. Liu was the conductor for this concert. June 2004 Pristine Scenery Concert - we invited the Hong Kong NTWJWA Leung Sing Tak Primary School Chinese Orchestra and Mr. Ng Chiu-shing to come to jointly perform with us. Mr. Ng was the conductor of this concert. May 2006 Harvest Gongs and Drums Concert - local Chinese percussionists were featured in this concert and a few great Chinese percussion pieces were played. June 2007 Our Young Musicians Concert - we again invited the Hong Kong NTWJWA Leung Sing Tak Primary School Chinese Orchestra and Mr. Ng Chiu-shing to come to jointly perform with us. Mr. Ng was the conductor of this concert. In this concert, we featured the accomplishments of over twenty youthful members from both the LST Orchestra and the Edmonton Chinese Philharmonica. It s the first time in Edmonton that so many young talents played together in a Chinese music concert. October 2008 North Meets South Concert - to celebrate the Seventh Anniversary of the Orchestra, we performed music from northern and southern China. We invited from Toronto Gaohu master Chen Guo-chan, Pipa performer Macie Ho and Yang Qin performer Calla Tan to perform at this concert. In the past six years, the Orchestra had also performed in many functions being held by charitable and non-profit organizations. The Orchestra helped them in their fund-raising activities and provided entertainments in their many charity events. The Orchestra is now entering its Eighth years of operation. We grew from the original handful of members to thirty members now. A most exciting development is that during the past year, many young musicians joined our Orchestra thus giving the Orchestra new blood and fresh energy. All these young musicians have sound music foundation and solid musical skills. They are serious in their music pursuits and practice diligently. We cannot miss to realize that behind their achievements are a group of dedicated music teachers working quietly in the background in the education of these young musicians. We have to sincerely acknowledge the contributions of these music teachers in our Orchestra. We look forward to provide the audiences of Edmonton with many more years of wonderful traditional and contemporary Chinese music performances. The continuous support from the Government, businesses, music societies and the general public is greatly appreciated.

17 North Meets South page 17 Music Notes 1. The General s March This is originally an ancient tune, the Southern General s March. In the 50s and 60s, the music was used in the movie series Wong Fei Hung. The theme song of the movie was later popularized as a hit Be Strong. The piece being performed at this concert is a fusion of the original and the new versions. Moonlit River and Flowers in Spring This piece is also called, Toll at Sunset, Moonlit Night at Riverbank and Riverbank Tune. Performed skillfully and exquisitely, the music, which has plain and mild melodies in varied rhythms, vividly depicts the fascinating sight of the moonlit river in spring and praises the landscape in the south of the Yangtze River. There are eight sections: toll reaches the tower overlooking the river, the moon rises from the mountain in the east, multiple layered shadows of flowers, clouds reflects in deep water, evening song of a drunken fisherman, rebounded waves slap the bank, creaks of the oars in the distance, the coda. 2. Spring Comes to the Yi River It was written in the early 70s. The composer uses Shandong folk melodies to sketch a flourishing scene on the banks of the Yi River during spring time. Farmers work industriously in the fields, looking forward to a bumper harvest and a better tomorrow. 3. The Night of the Torch Festival The Pipa solo piece was written in The composer tuned the strings in Fourths, intending to add colors to the piece. The music illustrates the celebration of the Yi tribe in the Torch Festival. 4. Birds Returning to the Wood The music describes the scene at sunset when the birds return to the nests. The sound of the Gaohu is utilized to imitate the chirping of birds. The Tragedy of the Double Stars This piece casts a dark and depressing mood. It expresses people s strong objection against arranged marriage. 5. Spring in the Tienshan Mountain This piece describes the beautiful scenery around the Tienshan Mountain in the Northwestern China. There are expressions of singing and dancing of the local people. 6. Moon Reflections in the Spring (Erquan) The music was composed by the blind street artist, Ah Bing. He reminisced the happy times he had spent when he visited the 2nd most beautiful spring. He was deeply saddened by the poverty and disappointment he was experiencing. 8. Strolling Along the So Dyke The music describes how the tourists walk leisurely along the So Dyke of the West Lake, which is the most famous scenic lake in China. Yao Dance It was originally written for symphony orchestra. Later, it was re-arranged for Chinese orchestra. With the use of folk musical instruments, the music becomes more colorful and authentic. The Yau tribe resides in Yuen-nan province in south-western China. Well dressed young people gather at night under the moon, to celebrate the seasonal festival. There are music, singing, and dances. The excitement grows until the music comes to a climatic close. 9. Mongolian Song The theme is adopted from a Mongolian Folk song Talya. A herdsman was in great sorrow because his beloved horse was killed by his landlord. He used the bones of his horse to make a fiddle and decorated it in the shape of a horse. When he played the fiddle, he could remember the good times he had with his horse. The deep and raspy sound of the instrument expressed his sadness. 10. Autumn Moon on the Calm Lake This music piece is sweet and full of lyrical meanings. It is soft like whispering. It is also the greatest representation of Ling-nan music. It is one of the classic piece in the 20th century. Butterflies on the Flowers The music piece is insightful. It uses the relationship between butterfly and flowers to describe the sorrow and sadness of departing people. 11. Love for the Pearl River Through the fluent melody, this traditional Guangdong piece reveals the beautiful scenes on both banks of the Pearl River. Csardas The music originates from Gypsy dance music. This piece was written in the 19th century as a violin solo. The introduction is dark and passionate. Then it turns into a rich and fluent style. The ending is energetic and delightful. The skill of the fiddler is fully utilized. 12. Weaving Rainbows This music was written in the early 70s. The composer had worked and lived among weavers. He used the spirited and clear-cut melody to display the simple and endeavoring lives of the weavers. 7. Jasmine This version of Jasmine is popular in the regions of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, north eastern China as well as northern China. Lyrical, flowing and developing in ornamental progression, it has all the traits of folk art. It became an internationally recognized tune when Puccini wrote it into his opera, Turandot.

18 North Meets South page 18 Guest Performer: Ken Chan CD Ken Chen Erhu Soloist Mr. GuoChan (Ken) Chen, an acclaimed Gaohu master, began his training with his brother when he was very young. He had studied under various renowned teachers including Yi-Jin Huang, Ci-Wei Yue, and To Chen. In 1892, he won the first prize in the 3rd Yang Cheng Music Festival for the Gaohu competition and represented the Guangdong Xinghai Music Institute in the special concert. He graduated from the Xinghai Music Institute in 1987 and was retained there as a teacher. In the same year, he held his first solo concert and was widely appreciated for his superb performance. In 1987, he also won the 1st Guangdong Music Performance Invitational for the Gaohu section. He also received Excellent Award in the 1st Guangdong/ Hong Kong/ Macau Music Competition, and Best Composition with <Qin He Qian Ying> (Golden Flower Reflection) in His musical playing with a rich Cantonese flavour has gained him the most outstanding Cantonese Music performer in the 90 s. He was invited to the 8th Macau Performing Art Festival as the concert Gaohu accompanist. In 1988, he represented China with the Chinese Traditional Music Representative Team in the World Exhibition Special Concert in Portugal, accompanied by the Chinese Broadcasting Orchestra and Macau Chinese Traditional Orchestra for the renowned composition <Qin Shi>. Mr. Chen released lots of records in these years and founded the Ken Chen Music Centre in 2007.

19 North Meets South page 19 Guest Performer: Macie Ho CBCOMNI2 Xiaomei (Macie) Ho --- Pipa Soloist Xiaomei was born into a family of musicians. She was taught music by her mother from an early age and received structured musical education in a formal College of Music. After graduation, Xiaomei was appointed special pipa performer for the Fujian Opera and Ballet Troupe of China, where she performed for fifteen years. Following this, she furthered her studies in music theory and pipa skills at the Shanghai Academy of Music with Professor Shi-lang Yip and Shi-cheng Lin, both famous music educators in China. Demonstrating a significant advancement in her musical theory and technique, Xiaomei won prizes in many music contests. Her performance of Melody of the Country was adopted as definitive in the teaching curriculum in the music institutes in China, and her plucking quintet Joy in the Yung City won the Class One Award. In addition to completing a number of recordings for radio and television, as well as cassettes and CDs, Xiaomei represented the Chinese government on visits to other countries to facilitate cultural exchanges and charity events. In 1999, Xiaomei immigrated to Canada. She was invited to join the Ontario Chinese Orchestra as principal pipa player and section leader of the plucking instruments. Xiaomei participated as a pipa virtuoso in many musical performances, including the Toronto Multicultural Festival, Asian Expo of the Japanese Cultural Centre, Royal Ontario Museum, Lion Dance Festival and CNE New Year Concert, and played with the Toronto Chinese Orchestra for local television programs. Xiaomei is a member of the Toronto Canadian Chinese Artists Centre. She has taught many students in pipa performance, and those who have entered music institutes have benefited from her instruction. With her sound musical training and experience in pipa performance, Xiaomei has created her unique style. The tone is delicate and gentle, demonstrating a fine understanding of the instrument and feel of the music in her performances.

Deeply influenced by her father s love of music at a young age, she enrolled at the High School Section of Guangzhou Conservatory of Music for formal musical training in 1985 and was accepted into the Xinghai Conservatory of Music upon graduation in 1991, majoring in Chinese traditional music. There, she received intense training from various teachers, most notably Professor Rao Ning Xin (guzheng), and Professor Chen Zhao Hua (yang qin). Upon receiving her bachelor s degree in 1995, Calla Tan immediately engaged herself with performances all over the country and started up her own teaching career. In 1999, China Music College s Level Examination Committee awarded her the honors of being An outstanding performer and instructor in Guzheng. and offered her a position to teach Guzheng as an extra-curricular course at the college. After immigrating to Canada in 2004, Calla Tan continued teaching and performing the guzheng and yan qin in various cities around the country. For the past year, she had performed in shows such as: Road to Asia 2005 Toronto Chinese New Year Concert New Music in the New Place Vancouver s Taste of Asia Press Conference Rogers TV Taste of Asia Sight, Sound & Action Production Company - Heartbeat and The Weaving Maiden With ten years of professional stage performance experience, Calla Tan not only received numerous awards and recognition from the Asian and North American guzheng community, her skilled performances also continuously demonstrates confidence, musical talent, and artistic self-expression.

21 North Meets South page 21 Music Director, Conductor Jason Wong Music Director, Conductor Born in Hong Kong, Learned violin, cello and erhu when attending Secondary School. In 1977, Jason learned cello and erhu under Mr. Lai Chi Mun and Mr. Lau Tak Fung. Later on, he majored in cello under the teaching of cello teacher Mr. M. T. Tao of the Hong Kong Music Office. Jason was active and participated in many Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. He became member and Ge Hu( Cello) player of the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra (1980) and Hong Kong Music Lovers Chinese Orchestra (1981). He toured Macau, Singapore, Taiwan and U.S.A (Miami city) with the Orchestra. He participated in the laser disks production for the Hong Kong Music Lovers Chinese Orchestra. In 1990, he formed the Hong Kong Juvenile and Youth Chinese Classical Orchestra with Mr. Ng Chiu Shin, Mr. Chan Yat ping and Mr. Lai Siu Ming. He became the first Vice President for the Internal Affairs of the newly formed Orchestra and worked hard in promoting Chinese music to the youth. He immigrated to Edmonton, Canada in 1992 and he is now the Music Director and Conductor of the Edmonton Chinese Philharmonica. He participated in many concerts such as: Chinese Music Concert 2002, A night of Orchestral Chinese Music , Harvest Gongs and Drum , Our Young Musicians , Taiwan Melody - Aug 2007, Edmonton Arts/ Dance & Music Jan 2008 and North Meets South Oct In the end of Sep 2008, Jason and some orchestra members were participated in Hong Kong International Festival of Chinese Orchestras.

22 North Meets South page 22 Biography of member soloist 2001 Born in the HuBei province of China, Zhang Bing has become one of the best known erhu players in Edmonton, and has performed in many Chinese community functions and concerts. In his active music career of over 20 years, he has mastered most Chinese string instruments including the Jinghu, Banhu, Gaohu, and the Zhonghu. He is a founding member of the Edmonton Chinese Philharmonica. He is currently the principal Erhuist in the Edmonton Chinese Philharmonica. Denny Chan was fascinated by Pipa performance at a very young age. He started learning Pipa 30 years ago in Hong Kong under the direction of Chan Jeung-hung. After immigrating to Canada in 1982, he continued to play the instrument. In 2001, he met a group of Chinese music enthusiasts and together founded the Edmonton Chinese Philharmonica. He has been invited to perform in numerous occasions and is well recognized. He had the opportunity to learn from Pipa master Liu De-hai in He is also interested in other plucking instruments, namely Sanxian and Ruan. He is presently the principal Pipa performer in the Edmonton Chinese Philharmonica.

23 North Meets South page 23 Biography of member soloist Lina Zhang was born in Tianjin in She loves music since she was young. At eleven, she started learning Pipa from Ms. Su Xin. In junior-high, Lina joined the school Chinese orchestra. She continued to study Pipa, then, instructed by Mr. Li Jungyu. She performed in various school activities. She entered the City Open Contest of Chinese Music, and achieved distinctive result as a finalist. Lina came to Canada with her parents in 2006, and settled down in Edmonton in She joined the Edmonton Chinese Philharmonica in June, and quickly became involved in concerts and public performances. Lina enjoyed the team work of the orchestra. She also cherishes the fellowship among the members ) 05)06) Christopher Leung In 2002, Christopher learned Yang Qin from Mr. Hui Wing Kwang in Hong Kong. On the following year, he became a member of the La Salle Primary School Chinese Orchestra. During 2005 and 2006, Christopher participated in the Hong Kong School Music Festival and his Orchestra won the championship in Chinese Instrument Ensemble (Primary) in 2005 and 2006, runnersup in Yang Qin Solo in 2005, 2 nd runner-up in Chinese Instrument (Small Group) in In 2005, the Orchestra won the Moon Prize in the 3 rd Invitational Chinese Orchestral Contest for Youngsters, held in Beijing. Christopher was admitted to the Hong Kong Children Chinese Orchestra in He moved to Edmonton, Canada with his family in He continues to study Yang Qin under the direction of Zhang Wen Jin. He joined the Edmonton Chinese Philharmonica in the same year.

24 North Meets South page 24 Biography of member soloist Adele Bosse-Morgan Joshua Ching is 13. He started the Yamaha Music Program at the age of 3, learning keyboard. He joined the Suzuki String Program at 6 and studied Cello under Adele Bosse-Morgan. Joshua participated in Kiwanis Festivals from 04 to 08 and received numerous awards. He joined the Edmonton Chinese Philharmonica in He joined the Edmonton Youth Orchestra in 2007.
