With its roots stretching back well over a century, the HK Phil made its professional début in It has now evolved into an orchestral powerhouse in the region, and an acclaimed cultural centrepiece of Asia s World City. The HK Phil is formed on the belief that a great city deserves a great orchestra. Annually it presents over 150 concerts attracting 200,000 music lovers. Through its acclaimed education programme, over 40,000 young people learned about orchestral music last year. Featuring an enviable roster of international conductors and soloists, the HK Phil performs a broad variety of music, with many concerts presented free; among them the annual Swire Symphony Under The Stars. The Swire Group has been the Principal Patron of the HK Phil since Through this sponsorship, which is the largest in the orchestra s history, Swire also endeavours to promote artistic excellence, provide access and stimulate cultural participation in Hong Kong, and to enhance Hong Kong s reputation as one of the great cities of the world. The HK Phil s members come from every corner of the globe, with a strong core of Hong Kong musicians. In September 2012 Jaap van Zweden became the orchestra s Music Director. Future years will see an ambitious series of new projects, with major international tours, renewed local partnerships and large-scale concert events. The Orchestra endeavours to reach out to a wider community with diverse programmes and activities in Hong Kong and beyond. 達致優秀藝術水平維持合適的節目及活動數量在 2014 至 15 年財政年度, 香港管弦樂團演出了六十二場主場音樂會, 觀眾人數近九萬八千人 此外, 樂團舉辦了多場教育音樂會及活動 社區外展音樂會及一系列細析聯篇歌劇 指環 的研討會, 估計本年有接近十八萬人曾出席或參與港樂的演出或活動 ACHIEVING ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE AND MAINTAINING A REASONABLE LEVEL OF PROGRAMMES/ACTIVITIES In the 2014/15 financial year, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra presented 62 main stage concerts to an audience totalling nearly 98,000. In addition, the Orchestra presented numerous educational concerts and activities, community outreach concerts, and a series of symposia associated with our Ring Cycle project. We estimate that nearly 180,000 people attended or participated in HK Phil events during this year. 6

9 音樂總監梵志登上任後推行多個大型項目, 成果可見於本財政年度的節目 其中包括在 2014 年復活節期間, 梵志登指揮樂團與巴赫合唱團 倫敦, 聯同多位國際聲樂家及香港兒童合唱團, 演出巴赫的 馬太受難曲 2015 年 1 月, 樂團上演了兩場華格納聯篇歌劇 指環 四部曲之一 萊茵的黃金, 是香港以至中國內地首個管弦樂團開展這套華格納歌劇的演出計劃 是次演出已作現場錄音, 準備日後發行 樂團更舉辦了三場研討會, 邀得本地及客席專家講者, 把華格納和聯篇歌劇 指環 介紹予香港的觀眾 樂團亦演出了全套布拉姆斯交響曲 由於原定擔任指揮的馬捷爾大師突然因病離世, 演出改由樂團前音樂總監艾德敦執棒 自十二年前踏足歐洲後, 港樂首次由音樂總監梵志登率領下重臨舊地, 在歐洲多個著名音樂廳演出合共七場音樂會, 皆大獲好評 當中在維也納黃金大廳的演出更設現場錄音及錄影, 作電視廣播用途 部分演出更包括香港作曲家林丰的作品 蘊, 而林丰本人亦隨團出發, 並在倫敦的開幕演出前主持講座, 講述他的作曲技巧 前赴歐洲之前, 港樂在香港文化中心舉行了一場免費音樂會, 讓香港樂迷有機會預先欣賞歐遊的節目 由芬蘭小提琴家克拉格活領奏的 四季 四季 音樂會, 已攝錄作全球電視廣播, 希望把香港文化中心及香港的管弦樂團帶到世界各地 此類錄影計劃仍在繼續策劃中 太古周日家 + 賞系列 是為一家大細而設的音樂會系列 演出安排在星期日下午舉行, 每場大約七十分鐘 演出前更在文化中心大堂舉行有趣互動的活動, 如樂器農莊 默劇劇場 小丑表演等, 以吸引小朋友參加 This financial year saw Jaap van Zweden achieve his first major projects as Music Director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Performances at Easter 2014 of Bach s Saint Matthew Passion featured The Bach Choir of London, a cast of international soloists, and the Hong Kong Children s Chorus. In January 2015 the first chapter of Wagner s Ring Cycle, Das Rheingold, was performed twice. This marked the beginning of the first complete Ring Cycle to be performed by any Hong Kong or Mainland Chinese orchestra. The project was recorded for impending commercial release. In preparation for the performances, the Orchestra presented three symposia with local and visiting experts, to introduce Wagner and the Ring Cycle to Hong Kong. The Orchestra performed a complete cycle of Brahms symphonies. Originally planned to have been conducted by legendary maestro Lorin Maazel, these concerts were kindly taken over by former Music Director David Atherton following the passing away of Maestro Maazel. Led by Music Director, Jaap van Zweden, the HK Phil made its first tour to Europe for over a decade, performing seven concerts in some of the continent s most celebrated venues. A performance in Vienna s legendary Musikverein was filmed and recorded for television broadcast. The Orchestra received overwhelmingly positive reviews, and was proud to include Hong Kong composer Fung Lam s work Quintessence in the tour. Fung Lam himself attended the performances and presented a seminar on his compositional technique in London, prior to the opening concert. The Orchestra gave a free Warm-up concert at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre before embarking on the tour. A further concert project, The Eight Seasons, play-directed by Finnish virtuoso violinist Henning Kraggerud, was filmed for international television broadcast bringing the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and Hong Kong s orchestra to a new international market. Further similar projects are in planning. Swire Family Sunday Series concerts concerts for the whole family, with a 70-minute duration on Sunday afternoons have featured activities for children in the foyer spaces of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall, including instrument petting zoos, and mime and clown acts. 7

10 主席報告 2014/15 CHAIRMAN S REPORT 2014/15 此外, 樂團亦舉辦了多場加入投映片段及影像, 或以著名娛樂名人及卡通角色為主題的演出, 令港樂的節目以不同形式吸引香港各階層 為慶祝香港文化中心二十五周年, 港樂舉辦了一場由多位才華橫溢的香港年青音樂家擔綱演出的音樂會, 包括演奏家張緯晴 指揮家蘇柏軒, 香港管弦樂團合唱團及學士合唱團等 另外, 樂團亦派出室樂小組, 在文化中心大堂舉辦的同樂日中表演, 讓公眾人士有機會一嘗指揮港樂的樂趣 港樂除了慶祝樂團職業化四十周年之外, 亦為慶祝香港電台成立四十周年, 舉辦了一場誌慶音樂會, 演奏香港作曲家曾葉發的作品 綻 2014 港樂應邀於香港會議展覽中心舉行的兩場粵語流行曲音樂會中, 與多位香港流行歌手合作演出迪士尼動畫的經典樂曲 此外, 樂團亦接受香港歌劇院的邀約, 合演李察. 史特勞斯的名作 莎樂美 另一個應邀演出是與香港國際鋼琴大賽合作, 但臨時取消, 樂團騰出空檔演出兩場免費音樂會, 由世界知名的指揮家阿殊堅納西執棒, 演奏西貝遼士及拉赫曼尼諾夫的作品 他更慷概捐出報酬, 在佔領運動期間把美好音樂帶給廣大市民 本年度與港樂同台演出的還有多位全球頂尖音樂家, 包括郎朗 齊默曼 艾斯 謝利 莫德曼等 華格納 萊茵的黃金 的演出陣容鼎盛, 演出者如葛納 延侊哲 迪楊 薜洪等均在國際享負盛名 Additionally, the Orchestra has presented a wide range of programmes with projected film and visual images, popular entertainers and cartoon characters, with the aim of making the Orchestra as accessible and appealing as possible to wider Hong Kong. The HK Phil participated in the 25th anniversary activities for the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. These included a flagship performance featuring Hong Kong s most talented young vocalists, performer Rachel Cheung, and conductor Perry So, and the combined choral forces of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Chorus and the Learners Chorus. The Orchestra also provided a chamber group, which took part in the Cultural Centre s Fun Day with a performance on the foyer stage an event where any member of the public could step up to conduct the HK Phil. In addition to celebrating its own 40th anniversary, the HK Phil contributed to the celebrations of RTHK s 40th birthday celebrations with the performance of Hong Kong composer Richard Tsang s work, Commentaries (2014). The HK Phil performed in hire engagements at two Cantopop performances in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, accompanying some of Hong Kong s best-loved pop stars in hits from the films of Walt Disney; and also for Opera Hong Kong in four performances of Richard Strauss masterpiece Salome. The late cancellation of a third hire project, the Hong Kong International Piano Competition, opened the schedule for the orchestra to present two free performances for Hong Kong of music by Sibelius and Rachmaninov, conducted by worldrenowned Vladimir Ashkenazy, who generously donated his fee to make fine music accessible at the time of the Occupy Protests. Many of the world s leading musicians have appeared with the HK Phil during this time. A small selection includes Lang Lang, Frank Peter Zimmermann, Emanuel Ax, Alexander Shelley and Christopher Maltman. The cast of Wagner s Das Rheingold was universally acknowledged as being of the very highest international standard, featuring artists Matthias Goerne, Kwangchul Youn, Michelle DeYoung and Peter Sidhom. 8

11 香港管弦樂團合唱團於本財政年度亦參與了多個演出項目 樂團亦聯同指揮家朴正鎬及香港大學協理副校長 研究 張英相教授, 於香港大學百周年校園李兆基會議中心大會堂呈獻三場以音樂 科學及科技為主題的免費音樂會 於 2014 年 5 月, 樂團舉行了一場成人教育音樂會, 介紹法國作曲家梅湘 樂團亦與香港歷史博物館合作, 在一個以俄羅斯藝術為題的專題展覽期間, 於博物館大堂舉行數場配合主題的小組合奏表演 我們很高興在本年度獲得以下獎項.. 港樂因在奧地利與中國的雙邊關係發展方面作出特殊貢獻, 而榮獲奧地利羅斯托因獎 頒獎典禮於 2015 年 2 月 25 日假維也納國會大樓舉行, 奧地利國民議會第二議長 Karlheinz Kopf 先生及奧中友好協會名譽主席蘇海文博士把獎項頒授予香港管弦協會代表董事局副主席劉元生先生 港樂獲德國 Classical: Next 提名角逐宣傳創新獎, 以表揚其推廣及吸引香港及來自世界各地樂手參與 虛擬樂團 的努力 港樂的第一副首席梁建楓, 獲香港藝術發展局頒發 2014 年度藝術家 - 音樂 獎 The Hong Kong Philharmonic Chorus performed in numerous projects across the financial year. The Orchestra presented three free concerts at Grand Hall of Lee Shau Kee Lecture Centre on the Hong Kong University Centenniel Campus, with the topics of Music, Science and Technology. These were co-presented by conductor Jung-Ho Pak and Hong Kong University s Professor and Associate Vice-President (Research) Paul Cheung. In May 2014 the Orchestra also presented an adult education concert introducing the music of French composer Olivier Messiaen. Ensembles from the Orchestra collaborated with the Hong Kong Museum of History to present short performances in the museum foyer in connection with a visiting exhibition of Russian art. We are pleased to have received the following awards during the year: The HK Phil was awarded Austria s Rosthorn Medal for its special contribution to the bilateral relationship between Austria and China. An award ceremony was held in the Austrian Parliament Building in Vienna on 25 February 2015, where Mr Karlheinz Kopf, the Second President of the Austria Parliament, and Dr Helmut Sohmen, Hon. Chairman of the Austro-Chinese Friendship Association, presented the medal to Vice-Chairman Mr Y S Liu, representing the HK Phil. The HK Phil was nominated for the Innovation Award by the Germany-based Classical: Next for its promotion campaign, Virtual Orchestra, which attracted participants from Hong Kong and across the world. HK Phil s First Associate Concertmaster, Mr Leung Kin Fung was awarded Artist of the Year in the Hong Kong Arts Development Award 2014 organised by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. 9

12 主席報告 2014/15 CHAIRMAN S REPORT 2014/15 致力培育本地藝術人才多位生於香港 居於香港, 或與香港有緊密聯繫的音樂家, 亦參演了樂團的演出, 當中包括指揮黃日珩 林敬基 蘇柏軒及朱俊熹 曾與港樂同台的香港獨奏家則包括張緯晴 葉葆菁 張吟晶 譚天樂 林家琦 杜格尊 李偉安及樂團駐團作曲家林丰 港樂的樂團首席王敬則聯同首席中提琴凌顯佑, 於 2014 年 5 月在香港大會堂合演了動人的 年輕的莫扎特 音樂會 傑出青年鋼琴家李仲欣則於 2014 年 6 月與樂團舉行其協奏曲首演 共一百名年輕鋼琴學生參與了郎朗 101 鋼琴家 活動, 在公開大師班獲郎朗親自指導, 並以免費音樂會形式舉行, 吸引了近一千二百名觀眾入場 年內, 香港管弦樂團合唱團參與了多項演出 合唱團約有二百名團員, 他們通過試音, 並承諾騰出時間練習及排練, 便有機會與港樂同台演出 香港管弦樂團合唱團曾參與的主要演出, 包括 2014 年 5 月由利茲指揮的音樂會 2014 年 7 月的 仲夏夜之夢, 以及 2014 年 11 月的香港文化中心二十五周年音樂會 香港管弦樂團繼續推行其 音樂密碼教育計劃, 舉辦多場學校專場音樂會 音樂教師講座 室樂小組到校演奏及樂器大師班, 把管弦音樂帶給全香港的學校及音樂學生, 也讓年輕音樂家透過接觸高水準的音樂家而獲得培育發展 港樂第二次舉辦供香港青年音樂家參與的 與港樂同台綵排及演出 計劃, 令五十位青少年有機會與國際級大師排練及公開演出 是次活動原本由指揮大師馬捷爾帶領, 可惜他不幸離世, 改由香港指揮蘇柏軒完成 CONTRIBUTING TO THE GROOMING OF LOCAL ARTISTIC TALENTS Hong Kong-born, based, or associated artists joining the Orchestra in performance included conductors Apollo Wong, Ken Lam, Perry So and Philip Chu. Hong Kong soloists who appeared with the orchestra included Rachel Cheung, Yuki Ip, Samantha Chong, Alex Tam, Kathy Lam, Jonathan Douglas, Warren Lee and the orchestra s Composer in Residence, Fung Lam. HK Phil s Concertmaster, Jing Wang and Principal Viola, Andrew Ling gave an amazing concert, The Young Mozart, at the City Hall in May An outstanding young pianist, Johnson Li, made his main stage concerto debut with the orchestra in June Lang Lang s 101 Pianists project, featuring 100 young Hong Kong piano students working in a public masterclass with Lang Lang himself, was presented as a free concert which attracted and audience of around 1,200. The Hong Kong Philharmonic Chorus, comprising around 200 local singers, performed in numerous projects across the financial year, an activity which opens the possibility of performing in concert with the HK Phil to anyone in Hong Kong who wishes to audition and commit their time to practise and rehearse. Main stage concerts engaging the HK Phil Chorus included the performances conducted by Carlo Rizzi in May 2014, A Midsummer Night s Dream performances in July 2014, and the performances celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in November The HK Phil continues its Keys to Music Education Programme, an extensive schedule of schools concerts, teachers seminars, ensemble visits and instrumental masterclasses. This activity is intended to bring orchestral music to all of Hong Kong s school and music students, and to develop young artists through exposure to top level musicians. The Share the Stage with the HK Phil project was held for the second time. Public auditions, open to all young Hong Kong musicians, gave 50 young people the chance to rehearse and then perform in a public working session with an international conductor. This was to have been Maestro Lorin Maazel, who unfortunately passed away. The project was conducted instead by Hong Kong conductor Perry So. 10

Thanks are due to the LCSD for providing funding under the Venue Partnership Scheme for supporting two positions of Arts Administration Management Trainees. This wider group of nearly 20 artistic administrators forms a unique resource for non-competitive, cost-saving activities in the devising of artistic planning schedules. The Orchestra s management is in regular contact with administrators in the Hong Kong performing arts companies, both to explore mutually interesting collaborations, and, where possible, to avoid programming duplications. The Orchestra regularly meets with representatives of the HKAPA to discuss maximising opportunities for emerging musicians in the Hong Kong performing arts industry. We have been working closely with other arts groups in cross promotion of each other s performances and events, bringing arts lovers and the general public a wide variety of artistic experiences. This has, in turn, brought both new and established audiences into the performance arenas. Advertisements for recruitment as well as for concert promotion were placed with partner organisations such as the Hong Kong Arts Administrators Association. To promote cultural exchange and cooperation, the HK Phil management continues to participate actively in related seminars and conferences both locally and in other parts of the world, including Mainland China and countries in Europe, North America and Asia. 11

14 主席報告 2014/15 CHAIRMAN S REPORT 2014/15 港樂的行政總裁是西九文化區管理局表演藝術委員會成員, 在西九文化區發展的各個層面上, 提供專業意見 在本年度, 他共出席了四次委員會會議 港樂的行政及財務高級總監, 為香港藝術行政人員協會之董事局委員並出任名譽秘書 董事局在本年度召開了兩次會議, 其他事項則透過文件往來處理 港樂鼓勵員工出席業界的專題研討會 行政總裁與行政及財務高級總監於 2014 年文化領袖論壇, 分別擔任講者及主持 本年度, 行政總裁亦在香港教育學院主辦的 藝術及文化團體品牌形象 研討會, 以及美國商會人力資本研究會中擔任講者 在 2014 年 7 月, 港樂各部門的總監在講座中與香港藝術節青少年之友分享出任藝術行政人員的經驗 樂團的藝術策劃總監分別於 2014 年 5 月及 11 月, 出席了於悉尼舉行的藝術行政人員地區會議和於柏斯舉行的亞洲樂團行政人員會議 兩次會議均旨在分享各團體過往演出及主要計劃的資訊, 探討如何在安排藝術家演出上相互合作以減低支出 九個主要藝團的代表亦定期會面, 就共同關注的議題進行商討 The Chief Executive (CE) is a member of the Performing Arts Committee for the WKCDA, providing professional opinion on the various aspect of the development of the West Kowloon Site. During the year he has attended four meetings of this Committee. The Senior Director of Administration & Finance (SDAF) served on the Board of the Hong Kong Arts Administration Association as Honorary Secretary. Two meetings of the Board were held during the year. Other matters were dealt with by circulation. Members of the staff were encouraged to attend symposia and seminars relating to the industry. The CE and the SDAF participated actively at the 2014 Cultural Leadership Summit respectively as speaker and moderator. During the year, the CE also spoke at the forum Branding of arts and cultural organisations held by the Hong Kong Institute of Education and at the AmCham Human Capital Conference. In July 2014 the Department Directors of HK Phil gave a talk on arts administration to members of the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival, sharing their experience as arts administrators. The Director of Artistic Planning attended an Artistic Administrators regional conference in Sydney in May 2014, and a conference for Asian orchestra administrators in Perth in November Both conferences were intended to share information about previous performances and salient projects of the different organisations, exploring possible collaborations in future on touring artists with a view to reducing costs. For the January performances of Das Rheingold, the orchestra presented three symposia with local and international experts speaking about Wagner and his music. Other ancillary activities on Das Rheingold included open rehearsal and pre-concert talks. 12

The Swire Denim Series, with its shorter duration, later start time of 9pm, and casual dress code for both audience and orchestra, has become an attractive feature of the Orchestra s schedule, attracting a different audience of young urban professionals to the concert hall. The Orchestra presented three programmes (six performances) in this series. The HK Phil continues to present concerts with multimedia elements, opening the concert hall to different audiences. In 2014/15 these included a concert based on music and footage from the landmark BBC nature documentary BBC Planet Earth, and a feature film starring Charlie Chaplin. The Orchestra was proud to present popular artist Lea Salonga in two performances to our main stage audience, and two additional performances specifically aimed at Hong Kong s large Philippine community. This brought it before a completely new audience, many experiencing a live symphony orchestra for the very first time, and proved to be a unique outreach activity for the Orchestra. The Orchestra s flagship education project, Jockey Club Keys to Music Education Programme, allowed the Orchestra to present a series of concerts for school students. Small ensembles were sent to perform in fifty schools all around Hong Kong, and seminars were presented to Hong Kong educators to equip them with new techniques and tools for music training in the classroom. Ten public instrumental masterclasses were also given to talented young Hong Kong musicians. In the 2014/15 financial year this project reached around 30,000 students, all of whom participated for free. The Orchestra presented its Swire Symphony Under the Stars concert in November to an audience of over 15,000 at the Central Harbourfront park. This concert featured Hong Kong conductor Perry So, who also conducted a Side-by-Side project for young musicians, and the 25th anniversary concert for the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. 13

These explored core music concepts, such as music and physics, and music and technology. An additional concert introduced the 20th-Century French composer Olivier Messiaen. The Orchestra presents free pre-concert talks in English or Cantonese before each main stage concert. All audience members receive a free printed programme with excellent programme notes for each concert. The Orchestra plans a schedule of open rehearsals for members of the public to observe the concert preparation process throughout the season. Our Young Audience Scheme, opens to all Hong Kong youngsters for a nominal fee, opens the way to discounted tickets, additional programme information, open rehearsals and games and challenges for our youngest audience members. The HK Phil has been nominated for an Innovation Award by music critics at the German-based Classical: NEXT, for its marketing campaign Virtual Orchestra in the social media, specifically Facebook. Members of the public were invited to play or sing a section of the popular dance music Can-Can. HK Phil then edited these short videos to put together a complete version with different people playing/singing together. The Virtual Orchestra, formed by the general public, had its debut on the screens at the Swire Symphony Under The Stars outdoor concert in the Central Harbourfront on 21 November 2014, with an audience of over 15,000. It was then broadcast on YouTube and promoted in Facebook. In fact, apart from Hong Kong, this campaign also attracted participants from other places including the United States. An exhibition was held in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre during June/July 2014 introducing both familiar and new repertoire, a number of world-renowned artists and composers, along with HK Phil s forthcoming education/outreach activities. Selected concert programmes were broadcast via radio (some also via TV) for free. Apart from traditional marketing channels, the HK Phil also launched games in social media platforms and websites to promote arts and culture to people who do not usually attend our concerts, especially young people, children, busy urbanites and families. 14

The Orchestra performed in seven cities across five countries, with concerts given in London s Cadogan Hall, Vienna s Musikverein, Zurich s Tonhalle, Eindhoven s Muziekgebouw, Birmingham s Symphony Hall, Berlin s Konzerthaus and Amsterdam s Rijksmuseum. The performance in Vienna s legendary Musikverein was filmed and recorded for television broadcast. The concert in Eindhoven was recorded by MAX and made available to broadcasters throughout the European Broadcasting Union. The RTHK Radio 4 broadcast this concert in Hong Kong. A Dutch TV crew filmed footage of some concerts during the tour, as part of a documentary on Maestro Jaap van Zweden. The Orchestra received overwhelmingly positive reviews. The tour gave the opportunity to the Orchestra to showcase to the world its outstanding performances and brought it to a higher international level. Supported by the Robert H. N. Ho Foundation, Composer-in- Residence Fung Lam gave a talk with the theme A Musical Depiction of Spiritual Journey at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London. Taking the opportunity while in Europe, members of the Board and senior management along with Fung Lam attended the reception hosted by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO), London, with the support of Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Hong Kong Tourism Board at the prestigious Whitehall in London. In Berlin, orchestra representatives including HK Phil s Board members, musicians, management and Fung Lam introduced the HK Phil at a reception hosted by the HKETO, Berlin. A String Quartet from the Orchestra performed at an award ceremony in the Austrian Parliament Building in Vienna on 25 February

The Board currently consists of 18 members, six of whom are Government appointees. At the Annual General Meeting on 3 November 2014, Mr Y S Liu stepped down as Chairman after leading the Board for six years. Mr Jack C K So was elected Chairman while Mr Y S Liu and Mrs Janice Choi were both elected as Vice-Chairmen. Two Government appointees, namely Mr Lam Woon Kwong and Prof CC Liu retired on 3 November 2014 after having served for six consecutive years. Mr Benedict Sin Nga Yan completed a six-year term as Government appointee and was re-elected to the Board on 3 November 2014 as Treasurer. The Government appointed three new members, Dr John Yeung Hin Chung, Dr Joshua Chan Kam Biu and Mr Douglas So. During the year, Mr William H. Strong and Mr Peter Kilgour resigned from the Board on 30 April 2014 and 1 January 2015 respectively. Mr John Slosar joined as Voting Member of the Society and was elected to the Board on 1 January The Board meets regularly at two to three monthly intervals. Five meetings were held in 2014/15. The Executive Committee, Finance Committee, Fundraising Committee and Audience Development Committee meet regularly to discuss specific areas of the Society s affairs and reports are made to the Board at Board Meetings. The Administration Office, headed by the Chief Executive, Mr Michael MacLeod, has an establishment of 37 staff members. The Office operates with five departments, namely the Administration and Finance Department, Artistic Planning Department, Development Department, Marketing Department and Orchestral Operations Department. Staff turnover rate was lower than the previous year but still remained high at 32% in 2014/15, with the highest turnover in the Development Department. 16

Miss Clara Ching was appointed Director of Development in June 2014 but resigned on personal reasons at the end of the financial year. Brief orientations are held with a view to helping new staff members adapt to the work environment and learn about the company polices and guidelines. Measures are in place to ensure compliance of the various rules and regulations. In September 2014, the Board reviewed all company policies, rules and regulations. Such review exercise will be carried out once every two years. The Society attaches great importance to staff training. Staff members on different levels are always encouraged to participate in relevant workshops and seminars, including the annual Cultural Leadership Summit. During the year, Artistic Planning Manager, Miss Michelle Wong completed the Leadership Training Programme for Senior Arts and Culture Executives co-organised by the HK Arts Administrators Association and the National Arts Strategies, with the support of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Assistant Education and Outreach Manager, Miss Yman Yuen was awarded the Fellowship for Arts Management Experience (FAME) Programme by the HK Arts Administrators Association for a 3-month attachment at Nostalgia Festival Poznan in Poland. Representatives from ICAC were invited to give a seminar on 3 June 2014 to provide advice on procurement policy. ACHIEVING EFFECTIVE FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT AND FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY With stringent financial controls, the Society has generated a surplus each year since For the year ended 31 March 2015, total income and expenditure were recorded at HK$ million and HK$ million, with a surplus of HK$1.98 million. The major sources of income for the Society are government subvention, sponsorship and donations, and musical events. Government subvention for the year amounted to HK$74.30 million, representing a year-to-year increase of 8.8% and over 53% of the total income. This additional funding was granted for supporting the Society to expand the Orchestra and hire one additional staff member. The remunerations of musicians and staff are reviewed on a regular basis. After the end of the current financial period, the Government has agreed to continue to grant such subvention for the forthcoming year (2015/16), which remains at HK$74.30 million. 17

20 主席報告 2014/15 CHAIRMAN S REPORT 2014/15 籌款收入及捐款亦比去年增加 20.4%, 共有 3,529 萬, 佔樂團總收入的 25%, 當中包括太古集團慈善信託基金 太古 贊助的 1,300 萬 港樂竭力與首席贊助太古及其他贊助者維持良好關係 本年度為太古與港樂第三個為期三年贊助協議的最後一年, 其年度贊助金額為 1,300 萬 今年太古與協會達成協議, 由 2015 年 4 月起繼續贊助三年, 總贊助額為 4,220 萬 我們十分感謝太古的長期支持, 令多項計劃得以開展及進行, 當中包括 2014 年 11 月舉行的年度戶外音樂會太古 港樂. 星夜. 交響曲 其他籌款收入主要來自音樂會贊助, 以及公司及個人捐款 於 2014 年 6 月 14 日舉行的港樂四十周年籌款晚宴十分成功, 扣除開支後, 協會籌得超過 600 萬, 是年度籌款額增加的原因之一 票房收入及外聘演出的收入分別有 2,026 萬及 327 萬, 合共 2,353 萬, 按年增長 19.5%, 佔總收入的 17% 在 2015 年 3 月 31 日完結的財政年度期間, 協會主辦了六十二場主場音樂會, 吸引近九萬八千名觀眾入場 其中一場音樂會演出華格納聯篇歌劇 指環 四部曲之一 萊茵的黃金, 協會藉著 2013 年的具競逐元素資助試驗計劃獲得一筆共 413 萬的額外撥款, 針對 萊茵的黃金 進行活動 樂團將於 2016 年 1 月演出 指環 四部曲之二 女武神, 已獲 2014 具競逐元素資助試驗計劃撥款 300 萬, 推行相關活動 Income from sponsorship and donations, including the sponsorship from Swire Group Charitable Trust ( Swire ) of HK$13 million, was recorded at HK$35.29 million, representing a year-on-year increase of 20.4% and over 25% of the total income. Every effort was made to maintain good relations with Swire, the Principal Patron, and also other sponsors. This is the final year of the third three-year sponsorship agreement with an annual sponsorship of HK$13 million. Swire has renewed its commitment to the Society as Principal Patron for another three years from April 2015, with a total sponsorship of HK$42.2 million. Swire is very much appreciated for its long-term support which has made many things possible including the biggest annual outdoor concert, Swire Symphony Under The Stars, held in November Other income derived from sponsorship and donations is mainly sourced from concert sponsorship and donations from corporate and individuals. The HK Phil 40th Anniversary Fundraising Dinner held on 14 June 2014 was a great success and raised over HK$6 million for the Society after setting off relevant expenses, which contributed to the overall annual growth result. Revenue from musical events of HK$23.53 million, including ticket sales and hire engagement income, amounted to HK$20.26 million and HK$3.27 million respectively, and has recorded a yearon-year growth of 19.5%, accounting for 17% of total income. For the year ended 31 March 2015, the Society presented 62 main stage concerts to an audience totalling nearly 98,000. One of the main stage concerts performed by the Orchestra was the first chapter of Wagner s Ring Cycle, Das Rheingold. The Society was granted another subvention by the Government amounting to HK$4.13 million for the Das Rheingold project through the Contestable Funding Pilot Scheme In January 2016 the Orchestra will perform the second chapter, Die Walküre, for which a subvention of HK$3 million was granted through the Contestable Funding Pilot Scheme

While an unstable global economic environment, which could adversely impact ticket sales and corporate sponsorship, is the principal risk and uncertainty facing the Society, the Society will continue to engage in building an audience and promoting the Orchestra by fostering a strong performing arts industry in Hong Kong. It aims to achieve this through programming of the very highest international level and by contributing to the city s aspirations to be an international hub for the performing arts. 19
