12 Intellectual Requirements for Jane Austen s Canonization GONG Yan In the initial period 1870s s of Jane Austen s canonization critical consensus and authoritative editions of her novels are among others two fundamental intellectual requirements to be met. Early reviews miscellaneous writings and literary lectures though constantly interweaved with impressionistic appreciations and occasionally redolent of the specifically Victorian nostalgia have somewhat enhanced Austen s literary status. For the first time in the history of English literature Chapman and other gentleman scholars have subjected a popular writer s fiction to the kind of textual editing approach reserved usually for Classical Greek and Roman authors. Their proof-readings and annotations have not only efficiently shaped the early readers understanding but significantly extended the semantic space of Austen s novels providing the most important intellectual requirement for her canonization. A Comparative Study on the Theories of Flavor in Chinese and Persian Classical Poetics LIU Yingjun Chinese classical poetics has a tradition of evaluating poems with the notion of flavor. Under the influence of such a tradition some literary theorists have advocated that the language of poetry should be ethereal flexible implicit and euphemistic with some far-reaching and lasting appeal. Coincidentally the tradition of evaluating poems with the notion of flavor also can be seen in Persian classical poetics. Although no corresponding literary theory has developed in Iran Persia there are indeed numerous instances in Persian classical poetry in which verses are commented upon by using sweetness saltiness the taste of food as a whole as well as fragrance. By investigating a wide range of examples we can find both similarities and substantial differences between the theories of flavor in Chinese and Persian classical poetics. The Death of Substitute An Interpretation of the Iliad Book 16 CHEN Rongnu The main purpose of this paper is trying to analyze firstly whether Patroclus is Achilles henchman in the Iliad secondly who kills him thirdly why Patroclus must lay down his life in the Trojan War. Focusing on Book 16 of the Iliad and the relevant verses the paper scrutinizes the epic by analyzing some critical words differentiating certain scenes and interpreting their meanings and draws the conclusion that the death of the substitute is nothing but the death of another ego of Achilles himself.
