Ou Xin, a big shot bandit of Xiqiao in Nanhai country, was one of the well-known bandit chieftains of Guangdong beside those stragglers in Guangxi. In comparison with other bandit chieftains, Ou Xin had taken part in the plots against the Qing Dynasty of both the revolutionaries and the conservatives for a relatively long period of time and had broader connections. And there are more survival reference and materials about him. Furthermore, a case study of him shows that there were great and complicated changes in the distribution of local social power resources, that the influence of bandits was over developed but still not completely breaking away from locality and clan, that the complement between the official power and landlord power was destroyed and that social control and order was in chaos. Even those in officialdom realized that the Qing government couldn t restore its efficient control unless there was a foundational reform. Key words: the movement of sending troop to support the emperor in year of gengzi; bandit; social control 14
