The Impact of Urban Employment System on the Survival and Development of Floating Rural Population in China WAN G Chun2guang ( Instit ute of Sociology, Chinese A cadem y of Social Sciences, Beijing 100720, China) Abstract : The fact that rural laborers have enjoyed the freedom of working and doing business in urban areas from 1978 till now indicates the weakening of the influence of the urban domicile system. But researches into occupation mobility, t he instit utional way to urban employment and informal employment show t hat t he urban employment system based on t he said domicile system has still hindered the survival and development of floating rural laborers in cities and their integration into the urban society. Therefore, the system is neither reasonable nor fair to the floating rural laborers, nor beneficial to the construction of the harmonious society.
