Tips of the Week (19): Teaching Pronunciation in Hospitality English Class Part III Hi! Welcome to Tips of the Week! This week, I would like to introduce twoactivities that can liven up a class and produce a lot of fun while students practice their pronunciation and listening. Bingo
Procedure: 1. Draw a 9-, 16- or 25-square grid on theboard. 2. Students copy the grid onto papers. 3. Write a list of words that have minor differences in pronunciation. 4. Students write these words in their grids in random order, so every grid will have these words in a different arrangement. 5. Teachers call out the words one at a time. As students find a word in their grids, they cross it off. 6. As soon as any student has a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal straight line of crossed-out words (at least three words in a line), the student calls out, Bingo! Ask this student to read aloud the words in his or her Bingo row and check if they are correct. Ifyes, he or she is declared the winner. If not, the game continues until another student calls Bingo! If the objective is to help students practice the Th sound, teachers can use the words on Handout 2.1c of the CHEI Hospitality English workbook in this game. If the focus is on word stress, teachers can use words like those in the following list. Gossip
Procedure: 1. Divide the classinto several groups (six to eight students in each group). Arrange the studentsin each group to stand in a line. 2. Provide the first student in each group a piece of paper with a sentence on it. Tell them that they have 10 seconds to memorize the sentence and return the paper to the teacher. 3. Then the first student speaks the sentence quietly into the ear of the next person, who passes it on. Asthe message is passed along, remind the students that they should speak in alow voice so other students cannot over hear. 4. The last student in each group writes down what he or she thinks the message was and gives it to the teacher as soon as it is finished. (If each group is given a different sentence, the last student can just write what he or she has heard on the blackboard.) 5. The group that is fast and accurate in passing the message will be the winner. 6. Teachers can ask the first student to repeat the sentence, and every one in the group tells their neighbor what they thought they have heard. This provides speakers with useful feedback about their pronunciation. This activity can also be used when teaching how to take telephone messages.sentences used in the activity can be messages that people are likely to leave in telephone conversations in a hotel setting. To make it more challenging, teachers can deliberately put in the
sentences some words that students may have problem in their pronunciation. If you have good ideas about teaching pronunciation, please share your practice with us. If you have any comments or questions about the CHEI Hospitality English workbook, please feel free to post them any time on WeChator send an email to me at ctc@chei.org. We look forward to hearing from you! 微 信 扫 一 扫 关 注 该 公 众 号
