1. Introduction The PME-1230 serves as an innovative and perfect energy management tool that can be used to monitor power for consumption analysis and department cost allocation, and is also suitable for electrical energy surveying applications. The PME-1230 can measure voltage, current, power, power factor and energy. With its small surface area and shallow depth, the PME-1210 is perfect for even small panels and even compact enough to be placed within the tight space of most existing panels. The PME-1230 is the company s third generation in metering technology. It is completely digital, thus enabling it to attain a high degree of accuracy, and can measure starting currents as low as 5mA. It can be connected to a computer host for remote auto meter reading, data collection and monitoring via the Modbus protocol over an RS485 communications interface. The PME-1230 is especially suited for users wanting to be able to save energy by taking control of their energy usage. 2. Features 1. Slim, short and compact. 2. When opening the package, check that the contents have not been damaged during transit. 2. Check to make sure that the product model and the labeling on the outside of the packaging are consistent. 3

Make sure that the actual wiring conforms to the wiring diagram designated in this manual. 6. Guard against dust and water damage. 7. 10. Operation 10.01. Regular Display Mode 1. Before Power Up: Press and hold the button to clear the kwh and kvarh values and reset them to zero as the unit is powering up. Warning: This will clear all accumulated data, use only during initial installation. 2. After Power Up: Press the button to cycle between the displayed values of: A. A phase current (A) * CT B. 14.Q&A Q1: What is the most common error when wiring for 3p3w with 2 CTs? A1: (1) Please take note of the wiring diagram for 3p3w with 2 CTs as shown below, especially the portion where the VN needs to be connected to phase B. (2) The default setting is 3P4W. Please change the setting 3P3W in the setting mode when used for 3P3W. Q2: Why are there strange and conflicting readings for the current, power and pf? A2: (1) Check that the voltage and current phases are connected properly: (a) Check that the wiring for the phase currents are in the same direction. (b) Check that the voltage phases correspond to their current phases, e.g. Phase A voltage is matched with Phase B current. (2) The markings for the existing wiring is incorrect or has been jumbled. 25

(3) Compare with a high accuracy meter to see if the readings are indeed correct. Q3: The displayed voltage is correct, but the value of the current is zero. Why is this so? A3: (1) Make sure that there is an active load and that it has not been turned off. (2) Check that the load circuit loop has not been broken or that a fuse has not been blown. (3) Make sure that the voltage and current phases are matched. (4) Check that the CT is not damaged. Q4: The main LED display is showing nothing even when connected to the proper power supply. A4: (1) Check that the proper voltage is applied, i.e. 110VAC is supplied to the 110VAC auxiliary power terminals or that 220VAC is supplied to the 220VAC auxiliary power terminals. (2) Use a multi-meter to check that the auxiliary voltage is supplied and is within the operating range, it should not be lower than 94V for the unit to operate, and it should not be greater than 253V otherwise the unit will be damaged. (3) Visually check the enclosure for cracks and burn marks, and smell for burned circuits. Q5: Unstable or no communication. A5: (1) Check that the communication network is not in the form of a star or a branching network. (2) Check that the communications converter is working properly and that there are no short or open circuit in the communication network. (3) Make sure that the address and baud rate setting correspond to the central host software, and that the address of each meter on the same network is unique and 26

there are no duplications, and that all the meters are set to the same baud rate. (4) Check that the RS485 wiring polarity is not reversed on any of the connected devices. (5) Make sure that the RS485 communications network has not been connected into a closed loop. (6) Make sure that the total wiring length for the entire network is not more than 1000 meters and that the number of meters on each network is not more than 32. Q6: Usage notes regarding PTs and CTs: A6: While the PT is measuring the voltage, their terminals may not be short-circuited. While the CT is measuring the current, their terminals may not be open-circuited. Q7: Why does the meter not provide a given function? A7: (1) Check that the meter model includes the given function. (2) Different models provide different functions, check that the correct model has been purchased. Q8: Why are some parameters such as the displayed voltage and current so conspicuously incorrect, e.g. Phase B voltage is exceedingly large. A8: (1) Check that the wiring is done properly according to the recommended wiring diagrams.
