L atin Am erican ists in Ch ina put their emphasis of research on such top ics as L atin Am erican econom ic adju stm en t and refo rm s, developm en t strategies, fo reign deb t crisis, in2 flation, democratic developm en ts, and po litical theo rieṡ In the 1990s, w hen the w o rld o rder changed greatly, Ch inese scho lars started to focu s on L atin Am erican po sition s in the new in2 terna t iona l set t ing s, neo libera l econom ic changes, finance and tax refo rm s, socia l secu rity system s, regional in tegration s, an ti- drug w ars, U. S. - L atin Am erican relation s, etc. R ap id developm en t of L atin Am erican studies in Ch ina Since 1978 is reflected in the fo l2 low ing w ays: 1) M o re researchers have com e in to th is area. A t p resen t they are m ain ly found at the in stitu te of L atin Am erican Studies ( ILA S) at the Ch inese A cadem y of Social Sci2 ences, un iversities and governm en t m in istries. N o less impo rtan t is the estab lishm en t of a national o rgan ization, in the early 1980s, in the nam e of Ch inese A ssociation of L atin Am eri2 can Studies (CALA S). 2) A cadem ic activities are m uch mo re dynam ic.
