By focusing on his relationships with both the Chinese and the German aesthetic traditions the present paper tries to explain how Feng Zhi was influenced by those traditions and why he was an advocate of the principle of the unification of nature and spirit. Though confronting with almost the same perplexities of modernity Feng Zhi was in many different ways closer to the German romantic writers Novalis and Tieck than to the Schlegel brothers and Kleist. 36 Key words Feng Zhi German Romanticism identity
