How does karma originate? Where does consciousness go? Ignorance is a blinding darkness Cause and effect is interdependent The good and evil we have done, Like a shadow, they stealthily follow Who is without transgression? Who is without faults? The root of our wisdom often lies buried, And often, we experience suffering So let us speak now of the origins Of the Compassionate Water RepentanceText When WuDa was young, he travelled and studied Before attaining fame, he met an ailing monk Smelly, sickly, and filthy, The monk was shunned by everyone WuDa could not bear to see him suffer, He cared for him and gave him medicine Then, grateful for all the gallantry shown, The monk offered to help him in times of need Diligently, WuDa continued to practice, His virtues and discipline became well-known The Emperor appointed him Imperial Dharma Master, Respectfully attending his lectures on Dharma He gave WuDa a Dharma-throne of agarwood Then in WuDa, a great arrogance arose His karmic retribution, thus unlocked, A human-faced boil appeared As his knee knocked against the throne The sore had eyebrows, eyes, a mouth and teeth Just like a person, it could eat and drink The doctors knew not what to do It was then the ill monk s offer came to mind Using twin pine trees as a landmark, WuDasoughtin earnest, the monk in the mountains He told of the sore and his suffering, The monk promised him, by washing it would heal As WuDa bent to fetch water from the spring, The human-faced sore yelled out its grievance Yuan Ang had Chao Cuo executed; From Han to Tang Dynasty, that was ten lifetimes past In the East City, his body was hewn in half; from that great hatred arose Unable to exact revenge, over many lifetimes, he greatly suffered TheVenerable One compassionately unravelled the karmic fetters, Cleansing all enmity with the Samadhi Dharma-water
WuDa suddenly awakened, as if from a dream Retiring to a hut, the Repentance Text he wrote The Buddhas have compassion for all sentient beings, ThustheDharma of the Water Repentance is taught Foolish are the mere mortals, Their defilements are many Countless also are their wrongs, Rich or poor though they be

In pursuit of the Noble Path, all three are obstacles They are hindrances both in human or heavenly realms Buddha viewed these as the Three Obstacles If they are not eliminated, suffering remains The remedy for the Three Obstacles is as follows Acknowledging our wrongs, we regret and repent The teachings of repentance are like pure water They cleanse away the sins of all beings Today with utmost sincerity, we repent With the compassionate Samadhi-water, All evils and defilements we wash away, Openly we repent our previous wrongs

Even if he becomes a high-ranking official, Fervently he dreams of ascending the throne Once he becomes Emperor, He yearns to play chess with the Gods When the Gods assent to a game of chess, He desires to build a ladder to the heavens Before the coming of Death, He knows not what is contentment Even if he becomesemperor of Heaven, He whines that the palace is not opulent When greed and desire know no bounds, The creation of evil karma never ceases Afflictions accompany our evil karma Cause and condition, fruition and retribution All are interdependent Knowing our wrongs, We repent and feel remorse The Law of Karma never fails We will surely reap what we sow

Repenting the Obstacle of Karma The Three Evil Karmas of the Body Killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct are the three evil bodily karmas Amongst all unwholesome karmas, killing is the worst To satisfy craving, the intent of killing may arise For the love of flesh and blood, other beings we kill For the sake of wealth, malicious intent may arise We rob others of their assets and lives Out of arrogance, the intent of killing may arise We stomp on insects and harm many lives Out of deviant beliefs, the intent of killing may arise We slaughter animals, making sacrifice to spirits For entertainment, the intent of killing may arise Hounds and hawks, fowl and beasts we hunt In attempting suicide, we harm our own bodies We incite others to take human lives Misusing rank and power, we commit atrocities Wilfully, we attack with clubs and knives Buddha taught us all sentient beings are equal Do not unto others what you would not have them do unto you All beings that are born exist for a reason Together, we live as one family in the Saha-world Heaven values the life of all beings Why then, must we senselessly kill? The second evil karma of the body is stealing Beware the heavy karma that stealing creates Do not hanker after what is not yours Seek not the ill-gotten gains Cheating, even nickel-and-dime, causes us trouble Passing off second-rate for first-rate is dishonorable We scheme and plot to short-change others Deceiving both young and old for minor gains We break into homes for valuables to steal At high interest, we make loans to others We move our fence, encroaching the lands of another Using trickery, we swindle the gullible and the naive We seize public resources for private gains, Kidnap children and seduce women
We abuse power and embezzle public funds, Solicit bribes and extort money We rob others with guns and knives Simple village folk are cruelly victimized We engage in organized crime, defrauding others The innocent victims are left in tears It matters not if the theft is big or small, The karma thus created is hard to eliminate The third evil karma of the body is sexual misconduct, There is no difference in severity for this karma Once we lust we get entangled and sink From the sea of desire, turbulent waves arise Buddha said sensual love and desire are like a prison Our bodies and minds suffer greatly with no escape How can one distinguish between man and beast? A sense of shame and decorum differentiates the two Some threaten others and steal their wives, Break apart marriages and destroy families They covet beauty and harass the innocent, Of all, corruption of another's chastity is most despicable Some lose themselves in pursuing the sensual, Spending their days in pleasure seeking, whilst their families weep We must awaken to the Law of Cause and Effect From sexual misconduct, the karma that arises is hard to eliminate Advise others to remain pure in body, Let integrity guard our actions A wife must uphold the virtue of chastity, A husband must ensure his faithfulness If we guard our bodies and minds well, Every family will be peaceful, happy, and blessed

Repenting the Obstacle of Karma The Four Evil Karmas of Speech The four evil karmas of speech are like sharp blades Each cut draws blood and harms others The first evil karma of speech is abusive language Harsh and mean words are most unbearable Every derisive word can hurt one like a needle We blame heaven and earth and curse the spirits, Berate sages and falsely accuse the kind souls Indeed we have no sense of propriety Scolding and demeaning others, we hurt their feelings Intimidating and threatening, we wound many others The second evil karma of speech is lying We speak words that lack truth and sincerity Deceiving ourselves along with others, We concoct tall tales and treat them lightly Deceitfully we lie about accomplishments And pretend to know things we do not Lies have always been most troubling Abandoning deceit for truth is truly benefic The third evil karma of speech is flattery It is agreeable and pleasing to the ear Just like opium coated in sugar, We find it delightful though it is poisonous Exaggerations may be conveyed via pen on paper Fawning words may be whispered in our ear Evil may be disguised in a song of praise The ear and eye thus deceived, disasters will never cease The fourth evil karma of speech is gossip Gossip can lead to all kinds of wrongdoings We praise others to their faces, Then defame them behind their backs By telling tales and sowing discord, We drive a wedge between close kins Gossip gives rise to many conflicts A society in turmoil is most ominous

Chopping and slicing, numerous cuts were made all over Slowly drifting, her spirit moved without stopping Then hovering near, it attached itself to the body of an animal Boiling water removed all hairs on flesh before it was fried in oil The skin was flayed, the flesh was stripped; the pain was insufferable No mercy was shown, the agony was unbearable The servants were laughing, they were all unmoved On the spot, live carp was butchered It was scaled and skinned, then pounded into paste Serving their mistress with fish balls, so freshly made, The servants hoped to please and be rewarded Awakening suddenly, she was seized with fear; A bowl of fish ball soup was served by her maid In her dreams, the anguish of sentient beings she keenly felt All that torment in Hell, truly is hard to endure ( 二 ) 地 狱 人 间 (2) dì yù rén jiān 佛 陀 告 诫 诸 众 生 地 狱 并 非 是 虚 言 fó tuó gào jiè zhū zhòng shēng dì yù bìng fēi shì xū yán 地 狱 不 是 在 远 方 地 狱 尽 现 在 眼 前 dì yù bù shì zài yuǎn fāng dì yù jǐn xiàn zài yǎn qián 仔 细 观 察 与 思 量 桎 梏 处 处 在 羁 绊 zǐ xì guān chá yǔ sī liang zhì gù chù chù zài jī bàn 苦 难 时 时 现 眼 前 炼 狱 宛 如 在 人 间 kǔ nàn shí shí xiàn yǎn qián liàn yù wǎn rú zài rén jiān Repenting the Obstacle of Karmic Retributions Hell on Earth The Buddha cautioned all sentient beings Hell is not a fictional place It is not some place far beyond; All of Hell s suffering is visible before our eyes When we observe closely and think carefully, Everywhere, we see beings bound by fetters of suffering With suffering constantly appearing before our eyes, It is as if Hell does exist in the world of men

The cycle of life and death is hard to transcend Who can see through the tangled web of love and hate? It was Buddha who taught us the Four Noble Truths Dharma cleanses away our defilements like water can Remember well the Three Studies and Six Perfections All evil karma was created by our own actions To engage in good or evil, the choice is ours Boundless manifestations exist in our world Impermanence is everywhere, it is ever visible Pure Buddha nature pervades the four directions Cause and effect is a cycle; no one escapes Fame and wealth are but illusions Who can hold them fast with both hands? Happy times pass by so quickly How do we hold on to even a single moment? Ignorance and afflictions are the causes of karma Once they enter our consciousness, it is hard to break free Name and Form, the Six Sense-doors, Contact, Sensation, Craving, Grasping, Becoming, Birth, Old Age and Death Suffering arises from the accumulation of karma Karma breeds afflictions and suffering results To understand how Dharma purifies like water does TheTwelveLinks of Cyclic Existence must be studied Desire and expectations cause us suffering Defiled attachment is life s greatest problem Like clouds and smoke, eventually our pleasures dissipate Let go of our glorious moments as they fade into nothing When in Master Wu Da a single thought of arrogance arose The human-faced sore sought to settle old scores By the Samadhi-waterVenerable Kanaka bestowed Instantly, Master WuDa s delusions were resolved The obstacles of afflictions, karma, and retributions, The practice of repentance explains them in detail Ignorance, karma and defilements are completely washed away And the Water Repentance practice is here to stay (Repeat 3 Times) In times of crisis, we must recognize clearly, right from wrong In times of great calamities, we must bring forth great compassion In times of great ignorance, we must exercise great wisdom In times of great turmoil, we must deeply reflect and repent The sea of suffering is vast and boundless, By turning back, we can return to the shore EliminatetheThree Obstacles and all delusions Listen to the calling of thebuddhas!
