Abstract Due to the great demand for professional interpreters, interpreting accreditation tests, the gateway to this industry, have mushroomed over the past two decades throughout China, exerting great influence on individuals and the community. In this context, it becomes imperative that a reliable and valid test be designed and developed. In the development of a test, the first issue the designers should take into consideration is what to be measured. In other words, the first step in measurement is defining the construct clearly. A test can only be useful and valid if it measures exactly what it intends to measure; that is, if it measures the construct it claims to measure. Besides, defining the construct and its constituents will provide the basis for meeting our expectations with test scores and guide the direction of the interpreting accreditation tests. In the theory of measurement, construct can be defined theoretically and operationally. In other words, construct involves theoretical definition of the construct and operational definition of the construct. The primary objective of the present study is to define the construct of interpreting accreditation testing theoretically, and to resolve the following questions: What is the exact theoretical definition of the construct of interpreting accreditation tests? What are the dimensions and constituents to be required in the theoretical definition of the construct? Besides, the present study is carried out to evaluate the degree to which the test content of the existing test is consistent with the construct of interpreting accreditation testing, and this process remains a part of construct validation. There are two approaches that we can adopt in defining the construct of language testing. The interactional/ability approach, in which language competence is defined in terms of its component abilities, and the real-life approach that the language use is identified that is considered to be characteristic of the performance of competent I
language users. In this study, the construct of interpreting accreditation testing is defined with the interactional/ability approach. Through the analysis of the features of interpreting profession, the purpose of interpreting accreditation tests and their relationship, the construct of interpreting accreditation tests is named as professional interpreting ability. On the basis of the interpreting theories and the research results on interpreting process or interpreting ability proposed by the domestic and overseas scholars and the standards of the existing interpreting accreditation tests, the components of professional interpreting ability are identified as knowledge competence, cognitive processing competence, discourse production competence and professional competence. After defining the construct of interpreting accreditation testing theoretically, this thesis selects a test paper of level-2 interpreting of CATTI to conduct construct validation, which leads to the suggestions for the improvement of interpreting accreditation test design. Key Words: theoretical definition; construct; professional interpreting ability; interpreting accreditation test; construct validation II

Chapter 1 Introduction Chapter 1 Introduction Due to increasing economic cooperation and exchanges between China and the rest of the world, interpreters who are trained to mediate between languages and cultures are in great demand and the market of interpreting is thus taking on an air of prosperity. Interpreting, as a profession, is viewed as golden and promising. It is therefore no surprise that interpreting accreditation tests, the gateway to the profession, have mushroomed over the past two decades throughout China. They include China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters (CATTI) organized by Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security of China, National Accreditation Examinations for Translators and Interpreters (NAETI) by Ministry of Education and Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shanghai Interpretation Accreditation (SIA) by Shanghai municipal government and English Interpreting Certificate (EIC) by Xiamen University. These interpreting accreditation tests not only provide equal opportunities for candidates to become professionals, but also serve as a regulator of the interpreting market and guarantee of quality professional interpreting. Since the interpreting accreditation tests exert great influence on individuals and the community, it becomes imperative that a reliable and valid test be designed and developed. In the development of a test, the first issue the designers should take into consideration is what to be measured. In other words, the first step in measurement is defining the construct clearly. A test can only be useful and valid if it measures exactly what it intends to measure; that is, if it measures the construct it claims to measure (Angelelli, 2009: 25). Only the construct is defined clearly, then and only then can the test designer begin to create a test that measures that construct. Besides, defining the construct and its constituents will lay the foundation for meeting our expectations with test scores and guide the direction of the interpreting accreditation tests. What s more important, the definition of the construct will 1
Chapter 1 Introduction provide validation evidence for interpretation of test scores (Bachman & Palmer, 1996: 116). Therefore, in order to guarantee a reliable and valid test, the test designer should, before designing test content, determine what the construct of the test is and what the abilities and constituents are in the construct. To that end, the present study endeavors to address the questions: What is the exact theoretical definition of the construct of interpreting accreditation tests? What are the dimensions and constituents to be required in this theoretical definition of the construct? Have the existing interpreting accreditation tests measured the construct and its constituent constructs defined in this research? In order to resolve the above issues, this thesis consists of seven chapters. This introductory chapter reviewed the development of interpreting profession and interpreting accreditation tests in order to document the need for research on interpreting accreditation testing. The significance of defining the construct clearly was illustrated before the analysis of the purpose and content of the present research. Chapter 2 introduces the theoretical studies on measurement and construct. Two approaches to defining constructs theoretically in language testing are also discussed in this chapter, the interactional/ability approach and the real-life approach. Besides, it explains why the interactional/ability approach is adopted to define the construct of interpreting accreditation testing. Chapter 3 carries out a detailed analysis of the purpose of interpreting accreditation tests, the features of interpreting profession and the relationship between interpreting accreditation tests and interpreting profession. Based on this analysis, professional interpreting ability is identified as the exact definition of the construct of interpreting accreditation testing. Chapter 4 conducts a discussion of the previous studies conducted by the scholars at home and abroad, including three theories on interpreting process and eight definitions of interpreting ability. Then the author explores the common ground of the components ascertained by most of the researches and classifies them into four categories. Chapter 5 presents the criteria of different levels of the existing domestic and 2
