Abstract This disserstation consists of five chapters: 1 Preface 2 The Study of Isotope Dilution Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectreometry ID-ICP-MS and Its Application. 3 The Application of Lead Isotopic Fingerprints to the Origination Identification of Traditional Chinese Medicines; 4 The Analytical Methods in the Research and Exploitation of Pacific Nodules 5 Determination of Rare Earth Elements in Nodule Samples from the Pacific Ocean by ICP-MS and Its Application to Space Speciation of Pacific Nodules. In the first part of this dissertation, the advantages of ICP-MS were discussed. Some important parameters that can influence the precision and accuracy of isotope ratio measurements performed with ICP-MS were discussed and possible solutions were presented. The applications of isotope ratio analysis were reviewed. Some types of ICP-MS instrument used to perform isotope raito analysis were presented and compared. In the second part, A method of isotope dilution Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry for the determination of lead in plant and human hair samples was established. The effects of instrumental parameters on the isotope ratio measurement were studied and discussed. For the precise determination, the data acquisition parameters were optimized. Tl was used as internal standard for the correction of mass bias and system driftment. The propagation of uncertainty in ID-ICP-MS was discussed to optimize the amount of concentrated isotope spiked. The analytical results of lead in some Certificate Reference Materials agreed well with certificated values. In the third chapter, Danshen (Salviz miltiorrhiza Bge), a kind of Traditional Chinese Medicine, soil and water samples were collected nationwide. A method for precise determination of lead isotope ratios in soil, water and DanShen by ICP-MS, was established. The initial results showed that the lead isotope ratios in the soil samples
from same area fall into same groups while different from the samples from other areas. The same result was obtained from the danshen samples. This result showed that the lead isotope ratios can be use to the origination identification of Traditional Chinese Medicines. The analytical methods in Pacific nodules were discussed in chapter 4, their performance advantages and disadvantages were evaluated. In final part of this dissertation, a method for the determination of Rare Earth Elements in Pacific nudole samples was developed. This method was applied to the space speciation of nudole samples successfully.
