3 School Annual Report 1. Mission of Po Leung Kuk 1.1 Po Leung Kuk is a charitable organization serving the general public with the objective of protecting the young and the innocent over a decade. The Kuk s education services follow the same objective in providing quality services to students. 1.2 All Po Leung Kuk affiliated schools of different levels operate on a non-profit making basis. The mission and policy of affiliated schools put emphasize on social benefit and keep pace with the current needs of the society. 1.3 Love, Respect, Diligence and Integrity is the motto of Po Leung Kuk affiliated schools. Cognitive, Aesthetic, Social, Physical, Moral development are all emphasized in the cultivation of students, and students are expected to contribute to the society with what they have learnt. 1.4 The School Management Committee of Po Leung Kuk affiliated schools is a committee with no political or religious background. People should be free to express their feelings and beliefs, provided that the law has been complied with and the school order is not threatened. All schools of thought and all religions can co-exist in schools. 1.5 Po Leung Kuk is a Non-Government Organization established by the Chinese. The Kuk is concerned about the community and the Mainland and dedicated to the development of the Chinese Culture. The affiliated schools encourage students to participate in social services, aim at developing their sense of responsibility towards our country and different nationalities, which in turn nurture them with an open and optimistic attitude as well as global perspective. 3

Our School 2.1 School Motto: Love, Respect, Diligence and Integrity 2.2 School Vision and Mission Adhering to the educational policies of the government and in keeping with the guiding principles of Po Leung Kuk, we attempt to provide a rich English learning environment with a rich three-dimensional approach to education. Our principal dimension being, firstly the school motto of Love, Respect, Diligence and Honesty, secondly our guiding ethic of Moral, Intellectual, Physical, Social and Aesthetic development and thirdly a multicultural ethos founded on the core ideas Stand as One, Make a Difference and One Team, One Mind, We Care, We respect. We aim to foster a vigorous, positive moral attitude, as the basis of a whole-person education of love and care. 2.3 School Goals Develop a steady and stable DSS school Reinforce students capacity for independent learning as well as bi-literacy and bi-lingualism Provide students with opportunities for success and help them to think logically and creatively Emphasize moral education in the areas of respect, equality and love. Strive for the effective building up of values for a healthy life Develop students cultural awareness and build up an international perspective under the umbrella of multiculturalism by exposing them to different cultures and teach them to act locally and think globally. 4

5 School Annual Report 2.4 School Background On September 1 st 2007, Po Leung Kuk, with the co-operation of the NCE Past Students, opened its second DSS School in Kowloon with two P.1 classes. From September 1 st 2008, this school, originally known as Po Leung Kuk NCE Past Students Primary School, was renamed in honour of the school donor, Dr. LAM Man Chan, the vice Chairman of Po Leung Kuk; in the Dedication Ceremony on October 14 th 2008, the school was named Po Leung Kuk Lam Man Chan English Primary School. It is a whole day DSS co-educational English primary school, which will eventually have 24 classes. The school started with two P.1 classes in 2007 and has developed to totally 16 classes, ie., four P.1-P.2 classes, three P.3 classes and two P.5 classes in Core Values of Education Language: Education towards bi-literacy and bi-lingualism Moral: Respect for different cultures Control: Learn to control our body, our sense and our mind; Optimization of physical, musical and arts education 5

A physical fitness test is employed every year to evaluate the physical fitness of all students. Achievement and Reflection of Major Concerns 6.1 Priority Task 1: Build a healthy, caring and loving culture in the campus Achievement Our school has won the caring school honour for the third consecutive year. It is a tribute to the school s effort in establishing a loving and caring culture in school. Through various school activities across all subjects, students, parents and teachers have built a stronger sense of belonging towards the school. More than 75% of teachers agreed that the Understanding Adolescences Project helps students to develop their personal, social, learning and life skills. This year, the social workers also provided focused courses to students with special needs to help them tackle their problems. A group of 10 students were appointed as Pupil Ambassadors to pass on the message of Loving Life to students in the school. Last but not least, our non-chinese students joined the Minority Students Talent Show to embrace the minorities and won a prize. 77.4% 10 The elements of a love and care are also integrated into the leadership training camps and school learning trips. In 2002, our P4-6 students participated in a trip organized by Education Bureau (EDB) to go to Qingyuan to deliver goods to the village and helped the villagers to set up their school library. P1 and P4 students learned to lend helping hands to each other in the training camps. Mr So Wa Wai was the officiating guest on our Sports Day and he convinced the students to have positive view of life. 308 students received awards from the school s Student Award Scheme, which scores on student s academic and behavioural standard. 11

12 % The school s relationship with the parents has gotten stronger. The parents eagerly participated in our Parent-Teacher (PTA) picnic, interest classes, talks, and volunteering activities within the school. As for the future and potential parents, talks were provided for the parents of our new P1 and parents from a few kindergarten schools. Fruit Day and Physical Fitness Test Day were efforts to tell students to live healthily. More than seventy parent-volunteers were registered and the total number of hours of volunteering services was more than 580 last year. Several parents received awards from the community for their great contributions To cater for the needs of the students with special needs, special arrangements were made for their tests and exams. The school also received subsidy from the government s Community Care Fund to sponsor students to join our learning trips outside Hong Kong. Masterpiece Issue 3, written by our school together with Po Leung Kuk Madam Chan Wai Chow Memorial School, was published to display the work of our students. 12

13 Reflection This year, our school will finalize the framework for our moral education and find more ways to document the school life of our students to better deliver the message of love and care. The newly formed PTA committee will host activities delivering the same message. The school will continue to promote academic exchange and share our experiences with other schools and organizations. This year s mentorship scheme is underway and it is helping new teachers working in the school to adapt to the new working environment as quickly as possible. For the extra-curricular activities, an increased number of professional instructors are hired to teach the classes. Our school will host our first Open Day ever this coming April, the main theme for the day is a combination of being environmental friendly and multi-cultural. 13

14 6.2 Priority Task 2: Pioneer a sustainable one-school-two-campuses running mode Achievement Starting this year, our P1-3 students go to our Farm Road Campus and P4-6 students go to our Sheung Heung Road Campus. After a year, the operation of running two campuses at the same time has become more stable. Human resources are allocated to the two campuses according to the strengths of the staff and the needs of the school. The students and staff are united by coming together for school events. The school website has been upgraded and is a great platform for the school to communicate with different parties outside. The computerized attendance system is deployed and reduced administrative costs. Reflection The connection between staff members of the two campuses can be strengthened further. Hiring of new teaching and non-teaching staff is necessary due to the increasing student enrollment. 14

15 6.3 Priority Task 3: Enhance the quality of teaching and learning Our school joined PLK Reading Scheme and PLK Books Nomination and Donation Scheme. The schemes successfully raised $20,001 from parents and school principals and the corresponding amount from Po Leung Kuk to restock our school library. $20,001 $20,001 There were 150 hours of fixed morning reading period. Majority of students ordered Chinese and English newspapers through the school. Some students were appointed as Reading Fairies to share stories with younger students during the reading time. Two book fairs were held in the school. Secondary school students and parent-volunteers also came in to the school to share stories with children. 150 One hundred and thirty-four students achieved awards in Reading Award Scheme. On a regular basis, Native English and native Putonghua teachers shared stories with students in the morning assemblies. More than ninety percent of parents agreed reading allows students to learn outside of textbooks and are satisfied with our school s arrangement for Reading Award Scheme % 91.9% There are 29 extra-curricular activity classes, for example, language classes and music classes, the classes are all taught by professional instructors. Parents (77.4%) agreed the classes are opportunities for students to learn about different things. All (100%) teachers shared the same 15

Po Leung Kuk Tong Nai Kan Junior Secondary College sent students to our school to give our students training for TSA Oral Test, on top of it, members of the school s Timekeeping Team came to help on our Sports Day. Our school invited students from Foshan Jianshe Primary School for a guest performance in Po Leung Kuk Putonghua Drama Show. Another group of students from Shenzhen O.C.T. Primary School came to our school to have lessons with us for three days. TSA Our school utilized the grant from Project of After-school Extended Chinese Learning for Non-Chinese Speaking Students to help non-chinese students to learn Chinese and we plan to extract more resources from the government this year for the same purpose. Our school reorganized the themes: school, body, family, interest, festivals, animals, plants, home country and culture from the different subjects to form a new curriculum for P1 students. 16

17 P4 students did a project on water resources. They had to use what they learned from different subjects: Chinese, English, Information Technology, General Studies and Visual Art. The visit to a water treatment plant gave students the chance to get firsthand information about the topic. Our school put emphasis on teachers professional development in multi-cultural curriculum by organizing various exchange experience. In this summer, our staff spent time in Guangzhou to visit a factory that is run by Dr. Lam Man Chan and had a lesson in Guangzhou Cultural Institute to learn about the history and culture of China. Three learning trips were organized, the destinations included Singapore, Qingyuan and Wuhan. For the Singapore trip, our students had lessons in Bukit Timah Primary School. Bukit Timah Primary School The total number of hours of continuing professional development was 2688 last year, an average of more than 100 hours per teacher. The school also hosted some seminars on topics like releasing stress and enhancing teaching strategies. About 80% of teacher agreed that professional development is important and necessary. Students of each form in our school have to complete projects of different kinds. They have shown that they have acquired different level of self-directed learning and presentation skills % 88.5% 17

18 ( ) Our school has started to prepare our P5 students for their transition from primary school to secondary school. Information about the secondary schools was given to the parents and secondary school principals were invited to give talks and seminars to the students. Reflection Drama is integrated into the daily teaching of English lessons. Our teachers are trained by professional instructors, hired using the grant from Po Leung Kuk. This year, our school will continue to take students on different learning trips outside Hong Kong. Within the school, the different subjects are developing their own school based curriculum and practical tests. To further develop our school s Chinese curriculum for non-chinese students, we are in a collaboration project with Hong Kong Institute of Education to enhance the curriculum and syllabus. The institute will send specialized personnel to our school and give us and our students support. Our middle managers will take courses and attend seminars to learn more about school management. P5 and P6 will be given more assistance with their transition from primary school to secondary school. Our school hopes to receive resources to upgrade our IT equipment and online learning platform as both of them will be a key part of our next three-year plan. 18

P.4 theme-based curriculum can raise students initiative in learning, sharpen thinking skills and help students to accumulate learning experience in combination with the outdoor learning activities. Through these, students apply knowledge in real life contexts and become equipped for daily life and enhance their self-learning skills. 19

20 7.3 Immersion Curriculum School-based learning materials are designed for all students who joined learning trips which can improve students to study more in a lively way. 7.4 Multi-intelligence Class and Extra-curricular activities We have 30 kinds of weekly Multi-intelligence Classes and 29 ECA Classes in which students can get opportunities to explore and develop their talent. All the ECA classes are taught by professional tutors

21 8. Student Support 8.1 Student Moral Development Our school puts emphasis on the moral development of students. Apart from the moral assemblies, leadership training camps and patrol teams, lessons toward whole person development have also been introduced to cultivate students social and emotional development. Our school also has set the reward and discipline regulations to foster the morality of students. Furthermore, we also hold The Adaptation Day for P.1 students, Orientation Day and Parent Talks to help the kindergarten students in adapting to primary school life. 8.2 Student Counseling Services Our professional school counselors provide supports to individual students together with educational psychologist and class teachers. Meanwhile, supports will be provided to students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) after the identification from educational psychologist and The Early Identification and Intervention of Learning Difficulties Programme for Primary One Pupils (EII).
