樂 The Relationship between Music and Religion in Zumaxi of Taiwan Shih Te-Yu Department of Chinese Music, National Taiwan University of Arts Abstract At present, the only performing Zumaxi in Taiwan exists in Tuku, Hsinying City of Tainan County, which possesses entertainment and religious function. It has two performance styles that are small opera and entertaining formation. The story of small opera is performed on the land that is cleared of weeds, while entertaining formation emphasizes on song and dance performance. Each has different content and performs different music. Among which, incantation chanting of religious part possesses the most mysterious color. The music of Zumaxi troupe of Tuku, Hsinying City of Tainan County is differentiated according to its key. There are four types, where Key C is the first, Key D is the second, Key F is the third and Key C modulating to Key F is the fourth. The music of the identical kind uses the same prelude and finale, which is similar to the classification method of the song name of Southern music chapter, and differ from the meaning of Western music modulation. Among its performance, local people respect the religious rites the most. By applying the twelve signs of Chinese Zodiac, the troupe has the function of driving out evil spirits. Each member hold green leaves in his mouth and mutter incantation, singing and dancing simultaneously to carry out the ceremony of driving out and warding off evil spirits. Since the Zumaxi troupe of Tuku, Hsinying City of Tainan County is the only Zumaxi troupe performing in Taiwan, and its performance style, stage appearance or makeup, music content, story plot, roles and etc are very distinctive, the public and Council of Culture Affairs have paid much attention to it in these recent years. - 402 -
