4 致香港醫學會慈善基金慈善音樂會香港園境師學會會長黃德業敬上二 一三年五月二十日蕙質蘭心扶危救生

It is my honor and delight to welcome you all here tonight in joining our Annual Charity Concert 2013 for RainLily. Over the past 20 years, The Hong Kong Medical Association (HKMA) has been raising funds for community projects and helping the underprivileged in music. The reason and incentive can simply be explained with our motto Safeguarding the health the people. Apart from improving the health care system in Hong Kong and enriching the medical knowledge the general public, HKMA wishes to heal people s soul via music as well. To promote and organize charitable activities in an effective way, The Hong Kong Medical Association Charitable Foundation was founded in 2006. It is our pleasure in dedicating own effort to support the needy social service groups, especially those with less funding support and resources. As mentioned above, the health soul should also be safeguarded. We, therefore, co-operate with RainLily this year with honor and support their set-up a RainLily Counseling Centre. The Counseling Centre provides crisis intervention by collaborating cross-pressional services such as medical, legal and post-traumatic counseling. As before, all funds collected through this Concert, without deducting any cost, will be used to support survivors sexual violence to walk out the darkness and embrace a colorful life. I cordially longed for your continuous support to our good cause. I would like to thank our ficiating guest, Dr. KO Wing Man, Secretary Food and Health, as well as other honorable guests among the audience for their prestigious presence and support tonight. Congratulations to The Hong Kong Medical Association Choir and Orchestra for this successful and remarkable concert. Our heartiest thanks to all the generous donors. I hope you all have an enjoyable evening! Dr. TSE Hung Hing President The Hong Kong Medical Association 5

On behalf the HKMA Charitable Foundation (Foundation), I would like to welcome you all to this Annual Charity Concert. Over the past twenty years, the Hong Kong Medical Association (HKMA) has been instrumental in consolidating the donations the medical pression to help the underprivileged with special medical needs. In this connection, the Foundation was established eight years ago in 2006, so as to better organize the various charitable activities and allocate the funds raised, as well as issuing tax-deductible receipts to our donors. During these years, we have raised over HK$ 8 million. We are glad that we helped not only the needy people within our local communities, but also the sufferers serious natural disasters in the Mainland and other parts the world, including Haiti and Japan. Recently, we have also made our contributions in supporting the reconstruction the quake stricken Ya an, Sichuan. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to our generous donors, and wish peace on earth. We are raising funds for RainLily for setting up a Counseling Centre. Many may not have heard RainLily. They are the first organization to help female victims suffering from sexual violence. Very ten these victims are too scared and embarrassed to mention their painful experience, not even to people closest to them. It is heart-breaking to know that over 80% the victims were actually being abused by family members or friends. As a result, they lost hope and trust to the surrounding. RainLily set up the first rape crisis centre which provides one-stop service for them. They fer counseling and coordinates medical, legal and other services for victims, accompanying them to go through the hard times. RainLily s crisis centre has been relocated in the past for certain reasons, service continuity was affected. It was hoped that with the new counseling centre, they are able to provide better services. Our Honorable Patron Dr. HAN Qide, Vice-Chairman The National Committee The Chinese People s Political Consultative Conference, and our Honorary Patron Mr. LEUNG Chun Ying, Chief Executive HKSAR are not able to attend the concert due to their tight schedules, we are most grateful for their support and also for contributing congratulatory messages in our concert programme. We are honored to have invited Dr. KO Wing Man, Secretary for Food and Health, as our ficiating guest. My heartiest thanks to those who make this charity concert a success, including members the Organizing Committee and the performers here tonight. Wishing you all a memorable and enjoyable evening! Dr. CHOW Pak Chin, JP Chairman, HKMA Charitable Foundation 6

The Hong Kong Medical Association Orchestra was established in 1989 by a group doctor musicians. It has now grown into a full orchestra with almost a hundred members. It produces a full-season program with three major concerts a year. On top that are a dozen or so outreach performances in hospitals and elderly homes. The Orchestra aims at providing the best music-making possible with musicians playing on a voluntary basis. Members stay with the Orchestra because the mission, fellowship and fun. Doctors, nurses, musicians, allied health workers, related pressionals or their students, friends and relatives are all welcome, as long as they could identify with the Orchestra s mission and have talents to contribute. 9

Hailed by critics and the public, Chi-Chung Ho has earned the reputation providing first-rate music with the orchestra (The States News, Michigan State, U.S.A.). "Very talented and musical very clear interpretative ideas... his excitement and passion for music inspired the musicians. --- (David Zinman, Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich, Music Director) "Having observed him conducting the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in rehearsals, he has earned my total confidence as a conductor and musician. --- (Tan Dun, Academy and Grammy award-winning composer) "A conductor remarkable skills... solid technique, musicality and ability to collaborate in the most positive way with orchestra musicians." --- (Gustav Meier, The Greater Bridgeport Symphony Orchestra, Music Director) Ho's artistry and talent in conducting had soon been recognized during his residency in the Washington Metropolitan Area. He was appointed to conduct the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for the famed composer/conductor Tan Dun. His outstanding performance guaranteed his participation in the recording project Tan and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Invited by the world-renowned conductor David Zinman, Ho was a full-fellowship conductor at the Aspen Music Festival, where he had chances to work closely with Zinman and other prominent musicians including Gil Shaham, Leon Fleisher, Joshua Bell, Sarah Chang, and Edo de Waart. He has also received direct guidance from world-class conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Yuri Temirkanov, and Hui-Chang Yan. Besides being the Music Director the Mason Symphony Orchestra, the University Michigan Gilbert and Sullivan Society (opera), and the Theatre Michigan States University (musical), Ho has held various conducting positions at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Lyric Opera, the Peabody Opera, the Peabody Orchestras, the Christian Oratorio Society, and among others. A native Hong Kong, Hoʼs works have been acknowledged beyond his country. Besides the United States, his pressional engagement also includes guest conducting in Eastern Europe, South America, and Asia. Soon after his return to Hong Kong in the end year 2010, Ho has already collaborated with numerous local groups such as the Opera Hong Kong, the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra, the Collegium Musicum Hong Kong, symphony orchestras the Hong Kong University and the Baptist University, the Hong Kong Bach Choir and Orchestra, the Macau Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, and the Taiwan National Chinese Orchestra. He is currently music director and conductor the Open University Orchestra, Medical Association Orchestra, as well as the contracted rehearsal assistant conductor the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. Graduated from the University Michigan (Ann Arbor) and the Peabody Conservatory Johns Hopkins University, Ho is also the first Hong Kong-born Chinese who got accepted into its prestigious doctoral conducting program. 10

The Hong Kong Medical Association (HKMA) Choir was founded in 1997 and staged its first fund-raising concert, together with the HKMA Orchestra, in December that year. Since then, the Choir has participated in many concerts; singing a variety songs including sacred music, operatic pieces, Chinese arts songs, Chinese and Foreign folk songs, Christmas carols, Broadway musicals and pop songs. The HKMA Choir aims at improving members vocal techniques, refining their choral qualities and enriching their repertoires while at the same time serving the community by participating in fund-raising concerts presented by the Hong Kong Medical Association. We also sing at other charitable and nonprit organizations, bringing music to hospitals, convalescent homes and institutions. To improve our members singing techniques, we have been holding Vocal training courses and Family Concerts in the last few years. These functions are also open to HKMA members. Our present conductor is Mr. Daniel LAM. He is a baritone with a rich voice, an experienced vocal teacher, a capable choral conductor and an accomplished pianist. Miss CHAU s piano teachers included pressors Music from Music Institutes China, Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai. She also obtained the LTCL in piano performance from the Trinity College London. She had cooperated with Mr. XI Ming Xin, the national senior conductor in the performance selected pieces from the Yellow River Chorus. 11

Daniel LAM is a multi-talented young home-grown performing artist, who is one the very few to have received vocal training at the internationally-acclaimed Juilliard School. Before studying in the US, LAM attended the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, under the tutelage Dr. Derek ANTHONY. His fine voice and rich musical background have landed him various leading roles in the Academy's productions, after receiving only one year formal vocal training. They included 'Dr. Falke' in Johann Strauss Jr.'s operetta, "Die Fledermaus", and the 'Toreador' in Bizet's famous work, "Carmen". LAM is also a fine player the keyboard, especially excelling in improvisation techniques. His self-accompanied singing has been well received by audiences. During his studies in the US, LAM was under the tutelage master Daniel Ferro, and had performed in various concert halls in New York City. His performances included a wide range works, like opera scenes from Kurt Weil's "Street Scenes", where he played the role 'Abe Kaplan', and Leonard Bernstein's bilingual chamber work in English and Yiddish, "Arias and Barcarolles". After returning from the US, LAM played the role 'Nazarene' in a Hong Kong Arts Festival opera production, "Salome", sharing the stage with his teacher, Derek ANTHONY. His latest role has been 'Paris' in Gounod's "Romeo et Juliette", produced by Opera Hong Kong. At present, LAM dedicates his musical talent primarily to charitable causes. He has sung in various fund-raising and evangelical concerts, and his voice has been heard near and afar, including countries in the West Indian Ocean like Madagascar and Île de la Réuion. In October, 2005, LAM appeared as a guest performer in a concert aimed to express care for the emotional needs frontline medical workers. LAM is currently the artistic advisor to the Hong Kong Medical Association choir. He has appeared in various fund-raising concerts the HKMA choir, and has been invited to hold a series vocal classes for its members this year. The course received enthusiastic participation and high acclaim by the participants. Apart from live performances, LAM has ten been invited to participate in CD productions by his musical colleagues. His recordings span a wide range musical styles, crossing the frontiers popular and classical music, also including works penned by himself. Released CDs included "But", aimed to raise funds for Medicare Resources Ltd, and LAM's first solo CD "Songs". From fall 2006, LAM takes on the role resident conductor the "Hong Kong Pressional Teachers' Chorus". 12

Sanctus is a hymn from Christian liturgy, forming part the Mass. The Latin lyrics describe worshippers joining the angels in praise God. Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth Pleni sunt coeli et terra Gloria tua Hosanna in excelsis Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God hosts Heaven and earth are filled with your Glory Hosanna in the highest Born Free is an Oscar winning song from the 1966 movie the same name. The movie is adapted from Joy Adamson s book the same name, recording how Joy and her husband reared the lion cub Elsa and eventually released her successfully into the wilderness. John Barry was the composer this song with lyrics by Don Black. Born free, as free as the wind blows, As free as the grass grows. Born free to follow your heart. Live free and beauty surrounds you, The world still astounds you, Each time you look at a star. Stay free, where no walls divide you. You re free as the roaring tide, So there s no need to hide. Born free, and life is worth living But only worth living Cause you re born free. The Impossible Dream is the theme song the 1965 musical Man La Mancha. This musical was adapted from the 17 th century masterpiece Don Quixote, written by the Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes. Apparently, the character Don Quixote had gone some what mad from his reading books chivalry. He put on his armor in hopes making his name and fortune by becoming a knight, and resolved to restore dignity to the lost pression knight-errantry. The musical remolded him into a hero who would persist in achieving his quest the impossible dream. This song was composed by Mitch Leigh, with lyrics by Joe Darion. It has been very popular among football clubs and television commercials for its symbolic meaning. 15

The Impossible Dream To dream the impossible dream To fight the unbeatable foe To bear with unbearable sorrow To run where the brave dare not go To right the unrightable wrong To love pure and chaste from afar To try when your arms are too weary To reach the unreachable star This is my quest To follow that star No matter how hopeless No matter how far To fight for the right Without question or pause To be willing to march into Hell For a heavenly cause And I know if I'll only be true To this glorious quest That my heart will lie peaceful and calm When I'm laid to my rest And the world will be better for this That one man, scorned and covered with scars Still strove with his last ounce courage To reach the unreachable star 16
