Singapore Chinese Orchestra 1997 80 Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO), inaugurated in 1997, is Singapore s only professional national Chinese orchestra. SCO, made up of more than 80 musicians, occupies the Singapore Conference Hall, which is a national monument. With Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong as its patron, SCO takes on the twin role of preserving traditional arts and culture and establishing its unique identity through the incorporation of Southeast Asian cultural elements in its music. 2009 2010 2019 9 Read More SCO has impressed a broadening audience with its blockbuster presentations and is fast establishing itself around the world. In 2009, SCO made history by becoming the first Chinese orchestra to perform in the opening week of the Edinburgh Festival, and in 2010, performed in Paris as part of the Singapour Festivarts. Well-known for its high performance standards and versatility, SCO has toured various countries and cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Xiamen, Nanjing, Suzhou, Macau, Hungary and England. The year 2019 also saw SCO performing in Asia Culture Centre, Gwangju, South Korea and completing the Europe Concert Tour in Berlin (Germany), Prague (Czech Republic), Forli (Italy) and Ioannina (Greece). These international platforms provided SCO with the opportunities to showcase its talents and music, propelling it to the forefront of the international music arena. With its vision to be a world-renowned people s orchestra, SCO widens its outreach by performing regularly at various national parks, communities and schools. SCO also commissions its own compositions. It is with this vision that SCO continues to inspire, influence, educate and communicate through its music.
Tsung Yeh Music Director 2002 1 2002 2005 2018 2013 10 2007 27 000 SICCOC 2005 3 2019 2016 Read More Maestro Tsung Yeh began his tenure at the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) as Music Director in 2002. Under his leadership, SCO expanded its repertoire with ground-breaking works such as Marco Polo and Princess Blue A Symphonic Epic (2002), and Admiral of the Seven Seas (2005) and Awaking (2018). In 2013, Tsung Yeh was awarded the Cultural Medallion; the highest accolade in the arts. He is also currently serving as advisor to the Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra. With relentless vigour, Tsung Yeh pioneered and developed SCO s signature Nanyang music style, infusing Southeast Asian elements and heritage into symphonic works. Tsung Yeh put on a grand display of Nanyang music during the National Day Parade 2007, where he conducted an awe-inspiring performance comprised of musicians from SCO, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Armed Forces Central Band, Malay, Indian and Nanyin ensembles. The Singapore International Competition for Chinese Orchestral Composition (SICCOC) was initiated by Tsung Yeh, and subsequently supported by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, to act as a platform to educate and establish repertoire of Nanyang and Singapore-inspired music. Flying the Singapore flag high, Tsung Yeh has led SCO on numerous international concert tours to great acclaim. In March 2005, he led the orchestra on its first tour to Europe at Barbican Centre in London, The Sage Gateshead and the Budapest Spring Festival. History was made when Tsung Yeh led SCO to be the first Chinese orchestra to perform in the Edinburgh Festival. Since then, SCO s international performances have proliferated under Tsung Yeh s guidance, touring China, England, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, and South Korea. In 2019, Tsung Yeh led SCO on a wildly successful concert tour in Europe, showcasing Nanyang music to Berlin, Prague, Forli and Dodoni to standing ovations at every leg of the tour. Back at his alma mater, Tsung Yeh is a guest professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He has taught conducting workshops hosted by the Conductors Guild, The League of American Orchestras and the Musik Hochschule of Zurich and is also active in conducting masterclasses in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. In recent years, he was appointed the Principal Guest Conductor of the China Central Chinese Orchestra, Artistic Committee Member of the Jiangsu Centre for the Performing Arts and Senior Researcher of the He Luting Chinese Music Research Institute of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and a member of the Faculty of the International Conducting Institue (ICI) in Czech Republic. In 2016, he was selected as one of ten outstanding conductors by the China Nationalities Orchestra Society. In the same year, Tsung Yeh was also appointed as the Expert of China Thousand Talents Programme.

With the use of rapid and energetic running passages, and the chorus of suona, gongs and drums, the composer seeks to paint a vivid picture of the festive scene. The contrasting middle section in adagio cantabile portrays the peaceful mood of an age of prosperity and peace. The recapitulation pushes the joyous and festive mood to a climax, and the work ends in the fervent joy of festivities. Zhao Jiping, a composer, professor and doctoral supervisor, is currently the Honorary Chairman of the Chinese Musicians Association, Chairman of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles Shaanxi Chapter, President of the Music Copyright Society of China, Deputy to the 11th and 12th National People s Congress and a member of the presidium, Deputy to the 13th National People s Congress, and holder of the accolade a Professional with Outstanding Contribution to the Country. Erquan is a famous spring and historical site situated below Hui Mountains, in the outskirts of Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province. This piece carries a beautiful melody, deeply emotional and desolate. Through the music, you can almost hear the heartfelt wishes of this blind musician, eulogising the beautiful moonlit night of Erquan, his exclamations towards his life of misery and his injustice towards his fateful experiences. With meticulous arrangement and varied styles, it depicts the gentle and beautiful oriental women pursuing an ideal life of love and happiness. It was performed in Tokyo, Seoul and Beijing by The Orchestra Asia, set up jointly by musicians from China, Japan and Korea. It was also performed at the Golden Hall of Vienna by the China Central Chinese Orchestra in 1998 and was well received. Liu Wenjin was a renowned composer and conductor. He graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music in 1961, and was the former chairperson and artistic director of the China National Orchestra, president of the China Opera and Dance Theatre, artistic director of the China Opera and Dance Theatre, deputy director of Chinese Musicians Association s Composing Committee and China Nationalities Orchestra Society s Artistic Committee, and artistic director and conductor of The Asia Orchestra. His representative works include the Great Wall Capriccio, Love of an Eagle, Unforgettable Water-splashing Festival, Jasmine and Ambush from All Sides. 天网 The Celestial Web 罗伟伦作曲 Composed by Law Wai Lun 天网 是陈瑞献先生特别为 2003 年新加坡艺术节创作的一首 117 行现代诗 诗词的题材取自 华严经, 表达的是生活万物互为牵连的同体大爱的哲学思想 序奏以渐渐增长的音响和上升的弦乐颤音展示着那无边无量的大网 ; 高亢的笛子与深沉的大提琴独奏, 似乎听到了天与地的对话, 这一幅幅迅速变换的音乐素描, 勾画出了整部作品的基本意境 今晚将演出第一和第五段 第一段, 祥和的旋律以及之后爆发而出的情感, 展现出那一根根牵着宇宙的永恒, 罩住整个天地线 第五段, 音乐从平和推向高潮, 并让我们随着那白光, 拉到山川拉到河岳, 拉到无边, 拉到永年 此曲是 2003 年新加坡艺术节的委约作品, 由国家艺术理事会与乐团联合制作 The Celestial Web is a modern poem of 117 verses specially written by Tan Swie Hian for the 2003 Singapore Arts Festival. The poem took reference from the Avatamsaka Sutra, which expounds the noble philosophical insights of the interconnectiveness of sentient and non-sentient beings and the universal love that should be shared among all. The symphonic poem is also divided into various parts and will be performed in a continuous fashion with no intervals. The overture begins with a trill from the strings in crescendo with rising notes to depict the boundless gigantic web, following a dialogue between the high flute and the low melodic solo of the cello that seemingly depicts a conversation between Heaven and Earth. All these changes in the musical impressions were instantaneous, yet it suffices in drawing out the fundamental artistic conception of the entire work. Only the first and fifth part will be performed tonight. The first part starts with a peaceful melody demonstrating each single thread of the celestial web that holds the university in eternity. The fifth part begins in a peaceful mode and ends in a climax. This work was a commission work of Singapore Arts Festival 2003 co-produced by the National Arts Council and SCO.
