The median age at diagnosis in Hong Kong is 53. As immune functions declines with age, persistent cervical HPV infections are more likely to occur in older than in younger women. Therefore, women over 26 years old should not neglect the importance of preventing cervical cancer. Different countries have different licensed age range for the vaccine (see below Q6). However, there is no evidence to suggest that such vaccines are either unsafe or ineffective beyond licensed age range. Therefore women above licensed age can consider receiving the vaccination. Male should get HPV disease preventive vaccine to prevent genital warts caused by HPV-6 and HPV-11, and the vaccination would likely reduce HPV transmission, and resulting infection, diseases, and cancers in females. There were over 11,500 new cases of genital warts in Hong Kong every year. Both men and women have a lifetime risk of developing genital warts. Its transmission rate is about 65% within sexual partnerships from an infected to a susceptible sexual partner, and an incubation period is between 3 weeks and 8 months, with the majority developing warts at around 2 to 3 months. The recurrence rates with genital warts after treatment can be high to 90%, and there is no guarantee they will not come back. The treatment of genital warts can be a painful process and can involve cutting, freezing or burning the warts.
