五 能 力 說 明 ( 一 ) 華 語 文 聽 力 測 驗 入 門 基 礎 級 : 著 重 在 日 常 生 活 的 一 般 簡 易 溝 通 能 力 等 級 能 力 說 明 入 門 級 在 對 方 說 話 緩 慢 且 清 晰, 並 隨 時 準 備 提 供 協 助 的 前 提 下, 能 聽 懂 基 本 短 語 或 常 用 詞 基 礎 級 當 言 語 清 楚 且 緩 慢 的 情 況 下, 對 於 簡 短 的 言 談, 能 理 解 內 容 與 掌 握 重 點 進 階 高 階 級 : 著 重 在 語 言 段 落 的 理 解 分 析 能 力 等 級 進 階 級 高 階 級 能 力 說 明 當 談 話 內 容 為 與 工 作 學 習 娛 樂 相 關 的 熟 悉 話 題, 且 講 話 人 的 口 齒 清 晰 語 音 標 準 時, 能 了 解 內 容 大 意 和 重 要 細 節 對 於 具 有 一 定 篇 幅 且 以 標 準 語 表 達 的 談 話 內 容, 包 括 專 攻 領 域 的 技 術 性 討 論, 不 論 內 容 抽 象 與 否, 都 能 聽 懂 要 點 大 意 流 利 精 通 級 : 著 重 在 語 言 使 用 的 廣 度 與 精 熟 度 等 級 流 利 級 能 力 說 明 能 聽 懂 各 種 抽 象 或 複 雜 主 題 的 話 語 內 容, 即 使 話 語 結 構 或 關 聯 性 可 能 不 夠 清 楚 明 確 ; 但 在 不 熟 悉 說 話 人 口 音 的 情 況 下, 可 能 需 要 特 別 確 認 部 分 細 節 精 通 級 能 聽 懂 語 言 不 規 範 或 帶 有 生 僻 專 業 術 語 的 演 講 廣 播 和 報 告 等 口 頭 連 貫 敘 述 的 內 容 ( 二 ) 華 語 文 閱 讀 測 驗 入 門 基 礎 級 : 著 重 在 日 常 生 活 的 一 般 簡 易 溝 通 能 力 等 級 入 門 級 能 力 說 明 在 有 視 覺 協 助 及 可 重 複 閱 讀 的 情 況 下, 能 掌 握 基 本 數 字 詞 彙 及 簡 單 的 短 語 並 能 大 致 理 解 句 子 內 容 基 礎 級 能 理 解 用 日 常 生 活 詞 彙 或 工 作 常 用 詞 彙 寫 成 的 簡 短 文 章 進 階 高 階 級 : 著 重 在 語 言 段 落 的 理 解 分 析 能 力 等 級 進 階 級 高 階 級 能 力 說 明 能 讀 懂 個 人 感 興 趣 的 主 題 或 與 專 攻 領 域 相 關 的 文 章 ; 前 提 是 文 章 以 淺 白 平 鋪 直 敘 的 方 式 寫 作 而 成 在 閱 讀 時 具 有 相 當 大 的 自 主 性, 能 因 應 不 同 的 文 本 及 目 的, 採 用 不 同 的 閱 讀 策 略 和 速 度 具 備 廣 泛 且 可 隨 時 提 取 的 閱 讀 詞 彙, 但 對 於 不 常 見 的 慣 用 語, 可 能 有 理 解 上 的 困 難 - 4 -

Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language I. Introduction The Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) is a set of standardized language proficiency tests developed for non-native speakers of Chinese that has already served test-takers from more than 60 countries. It is the result of a joint project of the Mandarin Training Center, the Graduate Institute of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, and the Research Center for Psychological and Educational Testing of National Taiwan Normal University. The research project began in 2001, and the first TOCFL tests were held in 2003. A new version of TOCFL was developed in 2008 and became available in 2013. The new version of TOCFL is divided into four sub-tests: TOCFL Listening, TOCFL Reading, TOCFL Speaking, and TOCFL Writing. There are three proficiency bands: Band A, Band B, and Band C. Each band is divided into two levels making a total of six levels: Level 1 to Level 6. Test-takers can choose the level that best suits their Chinese language proficiency and learning background for each sub-test they want to take. II. Target Test Taker TOCFL is a foreign language proficiency test for non-native speakers of Chinese. Anyone who wants to know their Chinese proficiency level, and anyone who wants to study, work, or do business in Chinese-speaking countries or contexts is welcome to register for the test. The table below sets out the indicative number of course hours spent learning Chinese, and the size of the vocabulary base of words (ci) learnt appropriate for each test level. III. Purposes TOCFL test-takers will receive a certificate for each sub-test that they register for and pass. The TOCFL certificate can serve as evidence of Chinese proficiency for: 1. Applying for a Taiwan Scholarship. 2. International students applying for academic programs at colleges and universities in Taiwan. 3. Overseas Chinese Students applying for university admission in Taiwan through the University Entrance Committee for Overseas Chinese Students (UECOCS). 4. Employment applications which require proof of Chinese language proficiency. 5. Obtaining bonus points under the new appraisal system for Overseas Chinese and international students who want to remain in Taiwan to work. Many undergraduate and graduate programs in Taiwan require a TOCFL certificate for admission or for evaluation of an applicant s Chinese proficiency, and many international businesses that do business with Taiwan will take candidates having TOCFL certificates into account when they are recruiting. IV. Test Format Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language: Listening TOCFL Listening - Band A has four sections: Picture description; Single-round dialogue - select from three picture options to answer each question; Multiple-round dialogue - select from three picture options to answer each question; and Dialogue - select from four written options to answer each question. There are 50 multiple-choice questions altogether. The entire test takes approximately 60 minutes. Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language: Reading TOCFL Reading - Band A has five sections: Sentence Comprehension, Picture Description, Gap Filling, Paragraph Completion, and Reading Comprehension. There are 50 questions altogether: between 35 and 40 multiple-choice questions - select from three options; 5 multiple-choice questions - select from four options; and between 5 and 10 matching questions. The entire test takes 60 minutes. TOCFL Reading - Bands B and C: Each has two sections: Gap Filling and Reading Comprehension. Each entire test takes 60 minutes and consists of 50 multiple-choice questions - select from four written options to answer each question. The level-based grading system is based on the appropriateness and substance of the test-taker's responses to situational tasks, compositional structure and completeness, correct syntax, and the use of a suitably wide range of appropriate vocabulary. Can understand the main points, main ideas, and abstract aspects of relatively long conversations and talks presented in clear standard speech including technical discussions in their field of specialization. Band C Focus: Vocabulary range and language techniques Level 5 6 Descriptor Can understand enough to follow extended presentations on abstract and complex topics outside their own field, even when the discourse structure might not be clear, or when connectors and cohesive devices are not explicitly signaled; may, however, need to confirm some details, if the speaker has an unfamiliar accent. Can write a summary that conveys all the main ideas of the original text and highlights its key points. Can reorganize information from lengthy written materials on a wide range of topics and can use a wide range of linguistic devices to write a well-structured piece that conveys ideas succinctly. 2. Can write and compose argumentative essays or reports. Can also write a long piece-form essay with a rigorous logical structure by freely using figure of speech and a wide range of linguistic devices, such as four-character idioms, proverb, and maxims are employed with ease that provides an evaluative analysis and critique of one or more issues, puts forward a comprehensive feasible solution, and an appropriate conclusion, and conveys their personal viewpoint. - 19 -

Please visit our Online Registration System for details of the venues for each test. V. Registration Procedure Registration for all tests conducted in Taiwan is done online. Please go to the main page of the SC-TOP website and select Test Registration to enter the TOCFL Online Registration System (Taiwan), or go to the following webpage: http://reg.sc-top.org.tw/ If you are using the Online Registration System for the first time, you need to Create a New Account using your passport number as your account name. After creating your account, please login by entering your account name and password on the main page and you can then register for a test. After logging in, please follow the steps set out in the flowchart below and complete the online registration procedure within the registration period. Be sure to complete your registration payment before the deadline shown on your payment slip. - 21 -

Step 1: Register Please first select a test location. Step 2: Choose Test Session Please select a Test Session. If the Seats Available column indicates that there are "0" seats available, you cannot register for that session at that particular location. TOCFL test score reports and certificates are sent via domestic or international registered mail. Express delivery is available for an extra postage fee. TOCFL test score reports and certificates will be mailed to the address recorded in the Online Registration System. Test-takers who want to change their address details must email the new details to service@sc-top.org.tw within 7 days of the test.
