12 The Chinese alphabet : its role and application in Chinese teaching in the world Peter KUPFER [ Germany],p67 This paper holds that, to meet the needs of the developments of globalization and to intensify ex2 change between China and other countries, it is essential to re2designate the Chinese alphabet as a sec2 ondary script of the Chinese language and to realize, step by step, the adoption of a two parallel scripts system. It has reviewed the historical developments of the Chinese alphabet before a discussion of its role in teaching Chinese as a foreign language and in international exchange. Finally, it points out the problems to be solved in Chinese orthography. Key words Chinese alphabet dual script system Chinese orthography Some suggestions on the revision of the Outline of the Graded Vocabulary for HSK ZHAO Jinming, ZHANG Bo & CHENG Juan,p73 The Outline of the Graded Vocabulary for HSK published in J une 1992 by the HSK Department of the Office of the State Leading Panel for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language has played an impor2 tant role in the development of TCFL, especially it has served as a guideline for HSK as well as text2 book writing. However, there is room for improvement. This paper, based on a detailed analysis of the Outline of its inadequacies, has made a number of suggestions on how to revise it in the following as2 pects : the defining of words with two or more parts of speech and homonyms, transcription of words with a neutral tone ending or with a retroflexed ending, the definition of synonyms, the handling of af2 fixes and the handling of non2lexical items. Key words language test vocabulary frequency Task2based approaches to second language pedagogy and the design of Chinese textbooks at Tertiary Level Jianjun URWIN & DU Liping [ Australia ],p84 Task2based approaches to second language pedagogy have generated much interest among re2 searchers and syllabus designers. This article argues that task2based approaches have much to offer to the teaching and learning of Chinese as a second language in terms of designing textbooks, since text2 books play an important role in the classroom in the sense that they dictate, to a large degree, the con2 tent and methodology of teaching. The article first describes task2based language teaching and then analyses its advantages with reference to relevant applied linguistic and ragogical theories. It gives defi2 nitions of task. Following this it presents a task typology and describes how focus on form is achieved. It then reviews a few textbooks of Chinese used at tertiary level. Finally, it points out the direction of designing Chinese textbooks in the new century and offers a number of pedagogicallyπand ragogically sound principles as a guide for future textbook designing.
