12 Luxury & Shopping glamour is back. The slinky slip dresses, nipped-waisted suits and broad shoulder silhouette would make the alreadyindependent lady of the 21st century classier and sexier. As the climate turns colder, expect the line between masculinity and femininity to thin with the arrival of oversized coats that hides the female hourglass silhouette, and with the return of classic menswear material dominating the runways: tartan, tweed, Prince-of-Wales checks you name it. But then again, no one ever gets disappointed by their re-appearance. It may be because we are feeling vulnerably nostalgic at the turn of season, or perhaps because with the countless new permutations possible, it s a fresh new turn every time. This touch of masculinity in the female wardrobe will surface mainly in the form of boxy outercoats as seen on Stella McCartney, Céline, Louis Vuitton and Chanel, or even in peplum pencil skirt as demonstrated by Michael Kors. Mention fall and trend speculators would arrive unanimously at this: leather jackets. Yes. This fall, we see this leather favourite again, arrogantly strutting its way out, oblivious to the possibility that trendspotters will go nay to yet another leather jacket. It s all about new looks: Loewe proudly sent out her leather in maxi, Alexander Wang amazed us with an all-black puffed at the arms, and Lacoste is well-prepped for winter in a white spacey-sporty combination piece. For those blue Mondays, Pierre Balmain and Bally have dependable leather jackets that are nevertheless edgy chic. While most labels are on the dark side, we sense that the spring fever has yet to subside for some. The negotiation between darkness associated with winter and sunshine from spring presents itself at an end-point full of excitement rockstar style. Against the must-have black, shimmering gold and silver elements, bright colours, frills and such are added to steer the runway away from two-hour sunshine days. While Versace, Givenchy, Balmain and Vivienne Tam have their share of cool rockstar beauties, Marc Jacobs was hands-down the queen of rockstars with its glittery fur-detailed coat that redefined rockstar style with unimaginable elegance and polite attitude. Even with our eyes closely following the statement pieces on the models as they sashay in and out, there were a number of bags dangling off the tall frames that were too hard to miss. Chanel succeeded its limelightstealing ambition first with her transparent plexiglas globe clutch, and later with her box clutches in tweed that are high on attitude and practicality. Marc Jacobs had his vintage structured spherical handbags and duffles reminiscent of school days, and Alexander Wang kept anomaly his charm with well-compartmentalized handbags that are pretty much one of a kind. With 50,000 dominoes to start its show, Anya Hindmarch steps up to the play with dominoes and board games-infused into her clutches like the Domino clutch. 16 Culture & Living A Star Is Born Priscilla Shunmugam is the face to watch in Singapore s fashion industry Sit down for an interview with Priscilla Shunmugam and it won t take long before you feel like you re gabbing with a best friend over cake and coffee. With minimal makeup and thick hair loosely tied up, the 32- year-old Singaporean fashion designer whose contemporary Asian womenswear is fast gaining traction strikes you as the friendly girl-next-door warm, chatty and incredibly down to earth. Unlike most successful fashion designers, Priscilla did not hail from a design background. Nor did she train formally at a prestigious design school. She was practising as a lawyer for a year after graduating from the National University of Singapore in Like most young lawyers, she worked hard and for long hours, and although she was earning a stable income that allowed for frequent holidays, she felt the need to move out of her comfort zone and do something different even though she had no clue what she wanted. I needed to shake things up a little bit! And the only way I could do that was to be away from Singapore, to be away from my friends and family, she recalls. She packed up and left for London on a one-year holiday-work visa in late There, she was inspired by the city s pulsating fashion scene. London is truly the fashion capital of the world. You walk on the streets and you can feel it! She eventually signed up for a dressmaking course at a community sewing school not really knowing what she was getting into. My classmates were mostly retirees and very maternal! They were your Golden Girls, she laughs. It was at the school that she learned the classical techniques of sewing. I discovered I had a flair for sewing and picked things up fast. To think I never showed interest in it when I had to take sewing as part of the Home Economics course in secondary school. After she finished her course, she went on to do pattern drafting with the London College of Fashion. It was a short, intensive course, but it was there that I further honed my fashion designing. Priscilla came back to Singapore in 2009, determined to start something of her own. She wanted to focus on creating contemporary dresses made with Asian fabrics that are sussed from places such as Sri Lanka, Thailand, Japan, Philippines and Cambodia. Exploring cultural differences nuances through fashion is something she thoroughly enjoys, and she attributes it to her mixed parentage (dad s Indian and mom, Chinese). It took a year of planning before she launched the Ong Shunmugam label from home in I was doing my own sewing and stitching while some pieces were being sewn in Sri Lanka, she says. I was a one-woman circus show. I was my own receptionist, PR person and delivery girl, and I still sometimes do those things even though I ve now got a small team! she says. In 2011, she opened her boutique in the heart of the Central Business District and now has a second outlet in the same building. The label s growth has been phenomenal. In May 2013, Ong Shunmugam made its inaugural appearance at the Audi Fashion Festival where Priscilla showcased her Fall/Winter 2013/14 collection of structured and tailored silhouettes inspired by Singapore s historical and cultural heritage. Her Spring/ Summer 2013 line debuted at Paris Fashion Week in October 2012 with a collection of classic cheongsam given a fresh new contemporary take. There are pieces that come with pleats, peplum or a cape, and as a blouse-andshorts combo or a flirty party dress. I love the cheongsam. I wear it often myself, Priscilla gushes. I also want women to know that they don t have to cut a slim, perfect figure to wear the cheongsam well! And to add another feather in the cap, Ong Shunmugam was named by Singapore Tourism Board (STB) as a Singapore brand to endorse and promote to International visitors. She s also one of the youngest nominees for the President Design Award I am grateful for the great support from my customers, the media, STB and my family! My dad checks Ong Shunmugam s Facebook every night just to check on the number of likes, she smiles. 18 Culture & Living At first glance, Kampong Glam comes across as the hookah hub of Singapore. Middle Easterninspired restaurants and cafes sit cheek by jowl with one another and their al fresco sections filled with people puffing sheesha in different fruity flavours. But look beyond these smoking zones and you ll discover alleys and lanes, corners and streets brimming with charming boutiques, indie cafes, art galleries and even a bespoke cocktail bar. Kampong Glam is also commonly known as Arab Street, its main thoroughfare; it was where Singapore s Arab traders first settled during the colonial days and also the part of town Glam District Sir Stamford Raffles allocated to the Malays in his town plan. The Sultan Mosque, with its glistening golden dome, is the iconic landmark. While the mosque has been standing at the same site since 1824, it was not until 1924, the year of the mosque s centenary that plans to incorporate the ornate minarets and balustrades kicked in since then, it has stayed largely unchanged and gazetted as a national monument in When you re done soaking up a bit of history, next up is to explore the enclave and get lost in its alleys. Shops stocked with a dizzying collection of fabrics and textiles, and Middle Eastern carpets are probably the first to assault your senses. Thereafter, let your nose be tickled by the scents from Jamal Kazura Aromatics. A 32 The Sultan Mosque forms a grand backdrop to Kampong Glam pioneer in alcohol-free fragrances since 1933, the shop specialises in attar oils sourced from the Middle East, India and France. You can also get your own customised signature scent from any of their three outlets in Kampong Glam. Take your magic carpet ride further and you will stumble across Haji Lane, perhaps the most colourful stretch in Kampong Glam. The lane could pass off as something out of a Moroccan quarter except this one comes with Asian and local twists. Indie boutiques stocked with one-of-a-kind bags, shoes and outfits will keep you enthralled for hours on the Discover the many quirky shops in the charming enclave of Kampong Glam off-the-beaten-shopping-path. One of our favourites is Zhai, a local company specialising in clothing and shawls made from 100 per cent organically grown bamboo fibre. For a delightful vintage experience, swing by Grammah for their 60s and 70s outfits and paraphernalia. A gem of a place for picking up knickknacks is Shop Wonderland. The store is a treasure trove of artfully curated European homeware, potion jars, scented candles, flowers and stationery. For a night of Latino-style revelry, mosey down to Piedra Negra, a multihued restaurant cum bar offering Mexican grub and sangrias, and magaritas made with 100 per cent blue agave tequila. For a sophisticated cocktail fix, get a seat at Bar Stories where you can sip on customised concoctions done to your personal taste and preference. Kampong Glam also has its quieter but no less charming side. Over at Jalan Pinang facing Victoria Street in Bugis, Artistry, a modish café cum gallery has been attracting local as well as foreign artists who have staged their solo exhibitions there. The place was conceived as an art and music space that also serves artisanal coffee, cakes (try the awesome red velvet!), Swiss craft beers and ciders, and a good selection of bistro nosh. Says Artistry s owner, Prashant Somosundram. There s a strong sense of community here among long-time residents, new businesses, civic and religious institutions. And this has created a vibrant neighbourhood that remains true to its historical roots while confidently embracing contemporary culture.
