All package types experienced growth in 2 010, especially plastic and cartons, which offered cost-efficient solutions to manufacturers. Differentiation drives innovation in packaging Competition continued getting fiercer as more products were launched in the market. Packaging helpe d manufacturers differentiate their products. Leading packaging manufacturers focused on innovation to make their package types more practical, light and attractive. Whilst some consumers continue to pr efer the traditional, allowing package types such as glass to keep growing, consumers who decided to t ry new products often were persuaded to purchase them by attractive packaging. Convenience is key Consumers usually purchased either the pack type that offered the most convenience like peeloff plastic closures, sachets or packages that offered easy application for toilet cleaning or the most c onvenient price. 4 Stricter packaging legislation Colombia has begun to comply with stricter international packaging legislation which often increases production costs of local companies; however, there is usually a costreduction benefit brought by the development of thinner packages, increased use of recycled material and implementation of cleaner technologies and best practices, which also improves consumer percept ion of their brands. Colombian companies recognised in 2010 the importance of environmental trends and were aware that sustainability policies and international legislation have a direct impact on the co mpetitiveness level of their companies. Multinationals lead but local players still play an important part Multinational manufacturers continue to play a vital role in the packaging industry in Colombia. The b ig multinational manufacturers, such as Amcor PET Packaging, Tetra Pak Ltd, Alcoa CSI and O- I Peldar, account for large shares of rigid plastic packaging, liquid carton and glass packaging as well as closures in Colombia. The packaging industry in Colombia, however, still has a significant presenc e of large national players since the industry is still highly fragmented, particularly in flexible and rigi d plastic where hundreds of small companies absorb high volume sales. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE Biofilm is the largest producer of biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) used for flexible alumini um/plastic packaging in the country, with approximately 65% of the market. Biofilm is the major supp lier of flexible packaging (BOPP) for ice cream, tobacco, and sweet and savoury snacks. Whilst consumption gro wth was seen for fruit/vegetable juices, a consumption decline was seen in beer. Glass continues to be considered a clean and efficient way to package drinks; however, its high cost challenges growth in th e pack type. RETURNABLES COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE O-I Peldar is the largest glasspackaging producer in Colombia with about a 90% share of total volume glass packaging sales in2010. O- I Peldar produces glass jars and bottles packaging for soft drinks, alcoholic drinks, baby food, preserv ed food, skin care, fragrances and hot drinks. The company has four production facilities: Medellín (h eadquarters), Cali, Cogua and Soacha. Table 36 Ranking of Major Glass Packaging Companies 2010 PROSPECTS Although other pack types are more affordable glass will still show growth during the forecast period, mostly due to the CAGR of 5.6% in home care and 5% CAGR in hot drinks packaging. 10 % growth, whilst the second runnerup, metal packaging, displayed a 4.7% CAGR over the forecast. The high growth in this pack type can be explained by its cost saving qualities as carton has become a common substitute for other types of packaging, such as metal or glass. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE Tetra Pak is the leading provider of liquid carton packaging in Colombia with almost 100% of the sh are in this packaging category. Tetra Pak provides packaging for dairy products (milk), soft drinks (fru it juice, tea), fresh food (sugar), and alcoholic drinks (rum and aguardiente (sugar cane rum)). Tetra Pa k has one production facility in Colombia located in Bogotá. Table 45 Ranking of Major Liquid Carton Companies 2010 PROSPECTS Liquid cartons is expected to keep growing over the forecast period. Containing solid products instead of liquids is a new application for liquid carto ns in Colombia, which could help to spur growth over the forecast period. However, growth could be t hreatened by flexible packaging, which also emerged in canned/preserved fish/seafood, the same prod uct category as the recently launched Robinson Crusoe Tuna Snacks. Considering that there is a consi derable cost difference favouring flexible packaging, it is expected that the switch from metal cans to other packaging types in canned/preserved fish/seafood will tend to be tilted towards flexible packagin g more than towards liquid cartons. 11 ses after the economic downturn. Packaging companies have continued to offer not only the final prod uct (the package) but a whole packaging solution, including design. This is has helped them to become more competitive, and keep their customers loyal. One of the first examples of this includes collabora tion between Noel and Litoempaques to produce metal tins and jars for sweet biscuits brand Noel Gall etas. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE Hojalata y Laminados (Holasa) continues to be the leading provider of packaging for canned/preserv ed food and the leading provider of metal closures for soft drinks and beer. It is the only producer of ti nplate and tin free steel for the Colombian packaging market and it also provides metal cans for preser ved fruits, meats, fish and prepared dishes, as well as metal cans for dehydrated and dry foods (peanut s, raisins, cookies, oats, etc.). Holasa s production plant is located in Medellín. Table 54 Ranking of Major Metal Packaging Companies 2010 PROSPECTS Metal packaging volume is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5% during the forecast period thanks to g rowth in all of its categories except aluminium trays. The economic recovery has encouraged the use o f lightweight metal packaging types by food manufacturers. Cost reduction whilst preserving the quali ty of the packaging will continue to be a longterm goal of metal manufacturers, especially in food categories in Colombia which dominate metal pa ckaging volume sales, such as canned/preserved fish/seafood. Volume sales of aluminium trays are ex pected to continue to see a CAGR decline of 15% during the forecast period. 12 based packaging categories composite containers and board tubs showed a decline. Growth in the pack type was led by folding cartons, which continues to be the largest category in terms of unit sales. Alcoholic Drinks packaging led folding cartons growth during the review period with a CAGR of 8.7 %. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE Smurfit Kappa Cartón de Colombia (SKCC) is the largest producer of corrugated board and paper sa cks in the country. It is also Colombia s largest packaging company by sales. It produces folding carto ns, corrugated board, and multiwall paper sacks. SKCC has four production plants in the country: Cali (headquarters, mill, paper sack s, corrugated box), Barranquilla (corrugated box, mill), Medellín (corrugated box), and Bogotá (corrug ated box, solid fibber). SKCC is also focusing on exporting to new markets different from traditional markets like Venezuela or Ecuador. Smurfit Kappa Carton de Colombia appears to be the leader in thi s category and is involved in the production of pulp, paper and also operates in the paperbased packaging industry. Table 63 Ranking of Major Paper-based Container Companies 2010 PROSPECTS Folding cartons is expected to continue positive growth, with a CAGR of 2% during the forecast period. As economic growth and consumer expenditure continues to recover, consumers will no longer feel quite as hesitant to trade up to midpriced or premium brands. This might allow manufacturers to return to more elaborate packaging pres entations, benefiting folding cartons as both primary and secondary packaging. 13 HEADLINES TRENDS After PET bottles, thin wall plastic containers continue to be the largest segment within the category, and displayed 3% growth in The pack type continues to be popular because it offers an affordab le option within rigid plastic as it reduces the cost of material. The packaging type benefited from new products in categories such as regular spreadable oils and fats and yoghurt. In 2009, spreadable oils a nd fats saw Alianza Team launch Campi Queso in 125g and 250g, and Unilever Andina de Colombia did the same with Rama Batida in 350g thin wall plastic containers, which gained an innovation prize in the 2009 edition of Andinapack. RETURNABLES COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE Carpak is the largest manufacturer of rigid plastic packaging in Colombia. The company produces th ermoformed and injection moulded tubs and cups, formed from polypropylene and polystyrene for foo d products and disposables. It also offers plastic films, flexible plastic and plastic pouches. Table 72 Ranking of Major Rigid Plastic Packaging Companies 2010 PROSPECTS Plastic trays are expected to increase in popularity and this pack type is expected to see a volume CA GR of 7% over the forecast period. Within the category, ready meal trays are expected to see a CAGR of 9% whilst other plastic trays are expected to see a CAGR of 6%. The high growth in plastic trays is expected as manufacturers continue to substitute aluminium trays with plastic trays, reducing costs.
