Since its creation in the 11 th century, the town has become a model garden-city. The urban part of the Medina was then surrounded by a green ring of orchards and vegetable gardens. Since then, some districts have taken the names of their gardens. (Arsat Missiouni, Arsat Chbani, Arsat El Bardii...). Beyond the walls, was the private estate of the Palmeraie with its thousands of hectares of palm trees, of diverse fruit trees and intercalated cultivated fields. Green rings were arranged in terraces forming a succession of farmed fields and orchards all the way up to the N Fis River which is the border of the suburbgardens. Marrakesh is today the conservatory of all the styles of gardens known in the Kingdom since the12 th century. For example, the historical gardens of the Agdal and the Menara, the Arsats or gardens that have been developed since the 18 th century. 5 More than just an oasis, Marrakesh is a real garden city. The four corners of the city offer green spaces reflecting the passion the Marrakchis have for the art of gardening. The art of gardening has always been considered as an expression of the way of life in Marrakesh. Since the city was created by the Almoravides in the 11th century, it has been a model garden city. The total area covered by the green spaces is about 350 ha not including the Palmeraie (palm grove) (10,000 hectares), the olive grove of the Menara (80 hectares). All those spaces offer the ochre city an average of 11- sq.m green space per inhabitant (the world official ratio is 10 sq.m. green space per inhabitant). Founded in the 18th century by Moulay Abdelsslam, the third son of the Sultan Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah, the Arsat was converted into a public garden at the beginning of the 20th century. The Foundation Mohammed VI, to which we owe the perfect renovation of the park, convinced the operator Maroc Telecom to equip this historical place with a cyber café and Wifi. The architects and the landscape gardeners who worked on the renovation of that garden did a spectacular job. They managed to preserve the initial space, firmly rooted in the 21st century. 11 Located south of the Dar El Makhzen palace, created in the 12th century under the reign of Abd El- Moumen, Almohade King, the Agdal gardens with a surface of 500 ha have been completed and are surrounded by a wall dating from the 19th century. The panoramic terrace of Dar El Hana situated on the banks of the largest basin (Es Sala), offers an incredible view of the Atlas mountain range. In summer, this space is cool and you can rest in the shade of the apricot and olive trees. The Khettaras, a well thought-out system based on the use of many reservoirs fed by the High Atlas waters, make a perfect irrigation of the garden possible. 15 Created in the middle of the 12th century by the Almohades, this garden is one of the oldest in Marrakesh and is an immense olive grove dotted with palm and cypress trees. Opposite the pavilion, where the sultan spent the summer evenings accompanied by his close relatives and musicians, the basin has become a highly-prized spot by the Marrakchis for walks and picnics. This basin is supplied with water thanks to an age-old hydraulic system, enabling the water to be carried directly from the mountains. This garden owes its name from the time when the late King Hassan II, then Crown Prince, commissioned the reforestation programme over the country. At that time it covered 200 hectares. Under the French Protectorate, Field Marshal Lyautey made it his home. The palace comprises two large gardens of 2 acres (8,000 sq.m.) adjacent to two galleries opening into an indoor courtyard. The first one was created by Si Moussa and the second one, around 1880 by his son Bahmad who was then the Grand Vizier. The path leading to the riad is lined with leafy trees and high date palm trees. 23 The Majorelle Garden is a small, peaceful heaven, located in the heart of the city of Marrakesh. This botanical garden was created in 1931 by the French painter Jacques Majorelle ( ) around his Art Deco studio of an astonishing modernity, built by the architect Paul Sinoir. This garden is a living masterpiece composed of exotic plants and rare species, which Jacques Majorelle, a botanical lover, brings back from his travels around the world: cactus, yuccas, water lilies, water lilies, jasmines, bougainvillea, palm trees, coconut trees, banana trees, bamboo... You will be surprised on discovering the cactus garden where hundreds of different entangled cactuses surround a small fountain. Small dunes have been formed and suddenly the image of a desert, where the sun plunges into white sand, comes into mind. 26 the new gardens / 新建花园 The Secret Garden / 秘密花园 The one of the biggest and of the oldest riads of the medina of Marrakesh. The origins of the complex date back in the time of the Saadiens dynasty, more than four hundred years ago. Reconstructed in the middle of the XIXth century by an influential boss of the Atlas, the Secret Garden was the abode of few of the highest political personalities of Morocco and Marrakesh. The riad, which we can today appreciate fully thanks to its recent restoration, is part of the big tradition of the Arab-Andalusian and Moroccan palaces: the visitor can discover gardens and buildings which compose it and which constitute so many exceptional testimonies of the art of gardens, of the architecture and the hydraulics arabic. Thanks to the millennium and ingenious hydraulic technique of the khettara, the Secret Garden disposed indeed from its origin of domestic water, a rare privilege and an additional sign of its wealth.
