We are just around the corner from the completion of our new hospital tower. The grand opening celebration is scheduled for April 18, This will be one of the most significant milestones for the health and wellness of our community. If you have not already seen the ongoing construction of our new tower, much work has been accomplished. Dedicated staff and constructors have been working diligently to complete the new tower on time and on budget. All the behind-the-scene work including design, permits, construction, modifications, and inspections, are just a few of the daily challenges. The next few months will be even more strenuous to get us to the finish line! Along with building a new hospital tower, a new diagnostic center on Gellert Boulevard in Daly City is also being built and will be open in January This facility will enable Chinese Hospital Health System to serve our community and members who reside outside of Chinatown with more comprehensive services. To meet the challenges generated by the historical changes to America s healthcare system, and in preparation for what the future may bring, we are constantly improving and responding to the needs of our community and members that we serve. This will allow our healthcare legacy to continue. I am thankful to those who support Chinese Hospital and its mission. 3 New Hospital Tower Opening in April 2016 新醫務大樓將於 2016 年 4 月落成 The new hospital tower construction is moving at a very fast pace. Over 80% of the construction is complete. Five of the eight floors are built with painting, flooring, and cabinetry finished. Major medical equipment such as MRI machine, CT scanner, Nuclear Medicine machine, and surgery room equipment will arrive in January Between February and April, the project will focus on commissioning, testing and final approvals. Additionally, the new fire alarm and medical gas systems are being installed at the existing hospital, which will be connected to the new building. All major mechanical and electrical equipment have been installed and are scheduled for start-up of all major systems in November next year. These updates are wonderful examples of the new tower waking up and taking its true form that everyone has been so eagerly waiting for. 4 A Tour of the New Hospital Tower Construction of the new hospital tower is well on its way. We now have 4 months to go, and the grand opening celebration will be on April 18, The new tower brings updated existing programs as well as, new programs for our community. The new tower is an 8-story building that meets all the latest seismic requirements and technological advancements needed to provide the highest quality care to our patients. These are the services provided in the new tower: State-of-the-Art Diagnostic Imaging Department (Basement Level 2): MRI Machine 64-Detector CT Scanner Hybrid Nuclear Medicine/16-Detector CT Scanner Ultrasound Bone Density Rad-Fluoroscopy 2-general Radiology Rooms (one is located in the Treatment Center) 6th Floor: 6-bed ICU all private rooms 12-bed Telemetry Unit (10 private, 1 semi-private) The extended hospital will have 88 beds, an increase from 54. The patient rooms have the most spectacular views of the San Francisco area, ranging from Alcatraz, Coit Tower, Treasure Island and the Bay Bridge, Financial District with the Transamerica Building, and Chinatown. Also, there are investments in a major, state-of-the-art utility system to ensure that a patient who stays at our hospital is as comfortable as possible. They include highly efficient climate controlled systems, 100% LED lighting in all areas, patient entertainment and educational systems (interactive TV's). Additionally, the new hospital has the ability during a major disaster to function on our own for 96 hours. 6 Grand Opening of a New Chinese Hospital Outpatient Center 東華醫院全新門診中心即將開業 Chinese Hospital strives to meet the increasing health care needs of the community. In addition to the four community clinics in San Francisco and Daly City, Chinese Hospital is proud to announce the opening of its new outpatient center to provide the neighborhood with more medical services conveniently located at 386 Gellert Boulevard in Daly City. Our enhanced services include primary care with subspecialties, acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine, imaging, pharmacy, laboratory, and optometry. Chinese Community Health Plan will expand its membership and sales services to this location as well. Please join us on January 29, 2016 to celebrate the grand opening of this new outpatient center and a health fair on the following day. 7 Department Spotlight: Radiology Introducing the Latest Technology 部門聚焦 : 放射部引進最新技術 The Radiology Department provides medical imaging services for Chinese Hospital and our patients. Their role is to support our physicians with medical imaging services as part of the detective work required to diagnose health problems and for the medical treatment of our patients. To stay ahead of leading technology and innovation, the department continuously updates its equipment. This includes: MRI machine, replacement 64-Detector CT Scanner, replacement Hybrid Nuclear Medicine/ 16-Detector CT Scanner, new digital X-Ray equipment (both mobile and stationary), replacement Mammography unit, and replacement Bone Density unit. In addition, digital x-ray unit in the Treatment Center provides faster service so ER patients do not have to be taken down to radiology for x-ray exams. The existing radiology department in the current building will later become a women's health center with mammography, ultrasound and bone density services. Automated Breast Ultrasound System (ABUS), replacement digital x-ray and fluoroscopy system recently went online. 8 23 Skilled Nursing Beds Added to the New Patient Tower 東華醫院將新增 23 個專業護理服務床位 Skilled nursing units serve patients who no longer require acute care, but continue to have medical needs that the hospital can support. Most patients will be discharged after surgery or hospitalization for a medical problem, but some patients will be moved to the skilled nursing unit if the surgical wound need frequent dressing changes, or if there is a continued need for intravenous medication which cannot be given at home. Hospital-based skilled nursing units have round-the clock nurses to care for the patient wounds, give all necessary medications, and monitor medical problems. Patients who need physical therapy may benefit from a few days on the skilled nursing unit prior to discharge to home. San Francisco is projected to lose 369 licensed hospitalbased skilled nursing beds from 2013 to While many hospitals are undergoing seismic retrofits, most hospitals in San Francisco plan to remove skilled nursing beds despite the need in the community. There will be more patients requiring these beds than there are available skilled nursing beds in San Francisco. The shortage of skilled nursing beds will greatly impact seniors and disabled patients, especially patients on Medi-Cal. Chinese Hospital's Skilled Nursing Unit will add 23 skilled nursing beds for short-term care and rehabilitation services. The Skilled Nursing Unit is vital to our senior patients, who are not yet able to care for themselves after surgery or acute care, and meet the requirements for admission to a skilled nursing unit. Chinese Hospital will provide 24-hour skilled nursing services. Physical therapy is a critical part of the rehabilitation process, and a physical therapist is on site to maximize the patient s functional independence. The hospital provides a caring environment with friendly and courteous Registered Nurses (RN), Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN), and nurses aides who will provide patient centered care for each patient. Nurses are there to assess and monitor patients, ensuring that they continue to improve and are soon ready to be discharged home or to the appropriate level of care. Nursing staff will be assisting with meals, bathing, and activities of daily living. Currently, Chinese Hospital is a 54-bed hospital which will increase to 88 beds, including our new 23-bed skilled nursing facility. 9 $1,535,162 from Drs. Low, to Name the Skilled Nursing Unit 劉氏醫學博士姐弟捐贈一百五十三萬多元, 命名新樓專業護理部門 Siblings Drs. Serene C. Low and Ronald B. Low were both born in San Francisco at Chinese Hospital in the 1930s and were closely connected to the Hospital and the community. They also extended the legacy from their father, Dr. Chin Y. Low, who had served Chinese Hospital for 35 years. Both Serene and Ronald were well respected Chinese- American physicians and pediatricians. From 1967 to 2006, they dedicated their lives to providing high-quality medical services caring for pediatric patients and newborn babies. Not only did they contribute their entire careers to the medicine, but they also demonstrated their kindness and generosity by donating their properties and combined gifts of $1,535,162 to Chinese Hospital. This is the second-largest single gift the Hospital has ever received. The Skilled Nursing Unit in the new hospital tower will be named after them in gratitude for their contributions. Ronald passed away in August of 2011, followed by Serene in November the same year. To continue providing their love and care to the community beyond their existence, they committed to donating all of their assets to various charities. Their work touched the lives of people in health care and education, new immigrants, children, and many others. Their dedication to give back to the community is impressive and memorable to all of us. Serene and Ronald were both pediatricians affiliated with Chinese Hospital. They maintained a private office practice, joined several physician committees, and served as members of the San Francisco Medical Society until their retirement in During their retirement, Serene and Ronald continued their medical practice as volunteers and were invited as guest speakers at numerous pediatric seminars. 兩位劉醫生均為受人尊敬的著名兒科醫生 從 1967 年到 2006 年這 40 年來致力為社會貢獻, 行醫濟世為其病人服務, 其中包括無數初生嬰兒, 杏林滿天下 更難得的是他們本著慈善大愛之心, 無條件將其名下的物業及部份其他產業捐贈東華醫院, 合共善款高達一百五十三萬多元 這是本院接受捐贈第二多的個人捐款, 新院專業護理部門將以他們的名字命名 劉保民醫生及劉瑞鸞醫生分別在 2011 年 8 月及 11 月與世長辭 過世後, 為延續他們對社區的鍾愛及關切, 授權將他們所有資產全部捐給各個慈善機構, 善跡遍及醫療 教育 新移民及兒童等不同領域 回饋社會之善心, 難能可貴, 令人感動 劉瑞鸞及劉保民醫生生前同為東華醫院醫生, 經營自己的診所, 更積極參與多個醫生團的委員會工作及 San Francisco Medical Society 公職, 直至 2006 年退休 退休之後, 姐弟倆人繼續做醫療義工, 並多次獲邀為各兒科醫學講座作演講嘉賓 SKILLED NURSING UNIT Serene C.
