Beijing s economic prosperity fuels a fast growing art market that is a magnet for young artists. This group is often viewed as a new generation of artists, the so-called post-80s generation. Instead of expressing their relationship to the west, as earlier Chinese artists have done, members of this post-80s generation search for an introspective and independent exploration of art and society. Within this framework, they produce a rich and varied body of works. Yan Bing s wheat murals echo the yellow earth of the countryside of his home province Gansu. Chen Youtong, biologist and native of Guangzhou, transformed his studio into a factory-lab hybrid to study the life of microbes. Kun Niao is a magazine editor and a recognized poet. Lin Ke is one of China s most prolific internet artists. Kun Niao, het pseudoniem van Guan Kunpeng, is in 1981 geboren in Suixian, Henan. Hij woont en werkt nu in Beijing. Hij is de auteur van de gedichtenbundel Male Sphinx. Als dichter moest Kun Niao 10 jaar wachten tot zijn eerste bundel Male Sphinx werd gepubliceerd. De beknopte, snedige gedichten zijn veelzijdig en bijzonder ontroerend. Het zijn combinaties van vuur en ijs, ego en maatschappij. Zijn werken staan te boek als de belichaming van zowel wereldse als spirituele moed. 2. Ha Nisi The Strategy of the Fence bestaande uit The Strategy of Grids 1 (2015), The Strategy of Grids 2 (2016), en Scheme of the Fence (2014) De installatie The Strategy of the Fence is geïnspireerd op bouwkundige modellen en stedenbouwkundige concepten. De kunstenaar richt zich op de verschillende toepassingen van hekken in het dagelijks leven. Ze gebruikt schetsen, olieverfschilderijen en installaties om de motieven achter die geometrische patronen en roosters te onthullen. Punish Proud (2015) Video, Liu Chengrui staat bekend om zijn beheersing van dramatische beeldentaal gepaard aan een nauwgezet en ritualistisch gebruik van het lichaam. Met zijn werken stimuleert hij het spirituele en instinctieve geloof van de kijkers. Over deze videoperformance, waarin Liu Chengrui zijn eigen bloed gebruikt, zeg hij: Ik heb het bloed verkocht om een groen laken voor je te kopen. Het bloed plakte aan het mes, en het mes werd in de schede gestoken. Het mes is afkomstig van een jongere van de Tibetaanse Kangba-stam in Zadoi, een arrondissement van de provincie Quinghai in de Tibetaanse prefectuur Yushu. Liu Chengru is in 1983 geboren in de provincie Qinghai en studeerde in 2005 af in Beeldende Kunst aan de Universiteit van Qinghai. Hij is performancekunstenaar, video-artiest, schilder en dichter. Het werk beziet hoe we omgaan met kanten-klare beelden en vormen en deze interpreteren en begrijpen in hun relatie tot de enorme omgeving die wij bewonen. Het werk is geïnspireerd op het gedicht Written on the Wall at West Forest Temple van Su Dongpo: Waarom kan ik de ware vorm van de berg Lushan niet onderscheiden? Omdat ik zelf op de berg sta. Kun Niao Cloud over the Meat Factory ( ) Recited audio length: Kun Niao wrote Cloud over the Meat Factory between 2009 and The poem describes young people (most of them born in the 1980s), especially ruralurban immigrants and their spiritual life. Kun Niao recited the poem and recorded it. The artist recorded it himself on a rainy night, preserving the sound of the rain falling together with the sounds of Chinese temple blocks (used to accompany Buddhist chanting) that enhance the spiritual atmosphere. Kun Niao, the pen name of Guan Kunpeng, was born in Suixian, Henan in He now works and lives in Beijing. He is the author of the poetry collection Male Sphinx. After 10 years as a poet, Kun Niao saw the publication of his first poetry collection, Male Sphinx. Concise and incisive, the verses are wide-ranging and deeply touching. They are combinations of fire and ice, ego and society. His works are said to be perfect embodiments of courage, both worldly and spiritual. 2. Ha Nisi The Strategy of the Fence consisting of The Strategy of Grids 1 (2015) and The Strategy of Grids 2 (2016) and Scheme of the Fence (2014) The installation The Strategy of the Fence is inspired by architectural models and urban planning concepts. The artist focuses on different uses of fences in daily life. She uses sketching, oil painting and installations to reveal the motives hidden behind those geometrical patterns and grids. Living in the EU allows me to reflect on issues of freedom vs. imprisonment, embodied in social ideology, as well as in general human rights relations. The Scheme of the Fence (2014) shows wire frame models from real life. Ha Nisi was born in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, China in She graduated in 2014 with an MFA from Nord Pas de Calais-Tourcoing, Higher School of Fine Arts, and in 2009 she was awarded a BFA from Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts (China). In this work, he uses cardboard boxes that serve as packaging for consumer goods in a sizeable installation. Photographs render the installation almost invisible, thus suggesting an inner life or deeper world of these boxes. Varying natural conditions and industrial pollutants mean that dust comes in an array of hues, ranging from white to gray and from brown to black. Built up in layers using an adhesive, the works are later polished to produce a shimmering reflective surface. Once completed, the canvasses show no trace of the original medium. The smooth surfaces with minimalist circles and squares hint at something more complex. The artist invites the viewer to project himself onto the reflective surface. Zhang Zhenyu was born in Hunan in 1974 and graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in His solo exhibitions include Natural Growth at the Chimney Art Center, Shanghai (2016); Abstract China at MingYuan Art Museum (2016), and Dust II at the Yallay Gallery, Hong Kong (2016). He took 182 portraits of his elementary school students. Each photograph has been preserved along with a hair from the head of each student. On the reverse of each photograph there is a signed agreement to see each other again in ten years and repeat the performance. The performance will continue indefinitely at ten-year intervals. Punish Proud (2015) Video, 2 28 Liu Chengrui is often recognized for his mastery of scenic visual language combined with a meticulous and ritualistic use of the body. His works stimulate viewers spiritual and instinctive sense of belief. In reference to this video performance, in which Liu Chengrui uses his own blood, he states: I sold the blood to buy a green cloth for you. The blood stuck to the knife, and the knife was inserted into the scabbard. The knife was obtained from a Kangba Tibetan youth in Zadoi County, Quinghai Province in Yushu. Liu Chengru was born in Qinghai Province in 1983 and graduated from Qinghai Normal University with a degree in Fine Arts in He works with performance art, video, painting and poetry. The work is inspired by Su Dongpo s poem Written on the Wall at West Forest Temple: Why can t I tell the true shape of Mount Lu? Because I myself am on the mountain. Ah (2011) Ah ( 啊 ) signifies a sound frequently heard in our daily life. Much like the Western ah, the character expresses a range of emotions, including surprise, anxiety, pleasure, etc. The repetitious string of this Chinese character in various dimensions results in a rhythmic wall drawing. Zhao Yao has visualized the sound in this work in an academic, non-commercial, pursuit. As an objective and pervasive presence in Chinese language context, ah is used to mock, sing and complain. The artist s fascination with the constantly changing living forms of microbiota is expressed through installations, video and performance. For this work, he collected, cultivated, reproduced and domesticated all kinds of microbes according to their functions. The microbes in each group competed for nutrition and fought against exotics, and on this basis developed naturally into numerous imperfect populations and perfect patterns. The microbe-based work was created at the invitation of Huawei Honor and the whole life process of microbes, growing, competing, wrestling, perishing, etc., was recorded by a Huawei Honor 7 smartphone, using its time-lapse photography function. Chen Youtong was born in 1981 in Chenghai, Guangdong, China. Since 2003, he has been exploring the artistic possibilities of microbiology, and has become one of the leading figures working with living materials in Chinese contemporary art. In 2016, Chen Youtong co-founded Wenhua Guan, an online art project based on smartphones. Lin Ke Fire-Desktop (2013) Video, 7 12 (loop) Since the very beginning of his career, Lin Ke has been searching for an action-driven environment that would allow him to explore immediate gestures in a reality that functions according to his own set of rules. Lin Ke is a painter who operates on the flux of images that is the internet, he dances within it, using his mouse, accompanied by fitting music choices that

8 dictate the pace of his actions. The result is a set of infinite narratives that allow us to spiral down into a magical world of nuances, movements, high tech and low tech, in a perpetual metaphor of contemporary existence. In Fire-Desktop, he drags and drops folders to simulate the dynamics of a flame. Lin Ke was born in 1984 in Wenzhou, Zhejiang, China. He graduated from the New Media Arts department of the China Academy of Fine Arts in In 2010, he began using computer recording software to record series of computer operations and then generate video files and images. Lin Ke has transformed his computer into a studio and performance stage. His first solo exhibition L in K was held in Gallery Yang, Beijing (2014). In 2014 he won the OCAT Pierre Hubert Art Prize and in 2015 he won the 9th AAC (Award of Art China) Young Artist of the Year award Han Wuzhou Several Drawers (2016) For the artist, these five drawers containing a myriad of medical capsules, are a work about hope and despair. The capsules contain medicine that was taken by the artist himself. It is a comment on the way we attempt to maintain our personal health, and on the idea of stabilizing one s life with the help of pharmaceuticals. Born in 1980 in northern Henan, Han Wuzhou creates artworks in various media including installation, video and photography. He favors common materials such as plastic litter and consumables that he employs to express his thoughts on living spaces and social issues. handprints have various cultural and religious meanings. The artist plays ironically with these multiple possibilities. Born in Shenyang, China in 1988, Zhang Muchen graduated with a BA from the School of Arts at Renmin University of China in 2011, and was awarded an MA by the School of Arts at Renmin University of China in Muchen currently works at Beijing Technology and Business University. Marres develops with artists, musicians, designers, chefs and perfumers, a new vocabulary for the senses. In addition to bringing a lively programme of exhibitions, presentations and performances, Marres also features a beautiful garden and a wonderful restaurant. Marres, House for Contemporary Culture, receives structural support from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the Limburg provincial authority and the Maastricht municipal Authority. 14. Zhang Muchen Handprint series (2013) Mudra Series, 2013 The Handprint series are interactive works made of calligraphic paper and ink. As the viewer approaches, the works light up slowly and the shadow of a hand appears behind the Buddha s handprint. In the culture of Buddhism, the hand is thought to be special and a symbol of strong cultural inclusiveness. Different
