13 83 06 The Books and Magazines as Cold War Weapons A Study on Chinese Prints Sponsored by U. S. Information Service - Hong Kong ZHAI Tao School of History Capital Normal University Beijing China Abstract During 950s the U. S. government conducted the vigorous propaganda campaign towards overseas Chinese in the Southeast Asia based on the USIS - Hong Kong as Chinese materials production center. For the target group was the educated people Chinese prints were accordingly selected by public officers as the most important medium in which World Today magazine and Book Program were the biggest spenders and the most influential parts. World Today as fast media turned into a semi - scholarly journal and anti - Communist novels became the principle parts of Book Program which was originally designed as a slow media. The two kinds of media were gradually merged into the edutainment which the U. S. propagandists heavily relied on as Cold War weapons. Moreover in comparative perspective prints as propaganda media aimed at elites was a tactic of the U. S. Third World psychological warfare which was distinctive from the U. S.
