2 Message from the Leadership 領導寄語 2014 has been a tremendous year for the Chinese Hospital Health System, with many milestones to acknowledge. Chinese Community Health Plan (CCHP), owned by Chinese Hospital Association, experienced great success as a participant of the Covered California health exchange. Despite challenges of working within a new, unprecedented healthcare reform system, CCHP enrolled 14,000 members through the Covered California health exchange in a 6-month period a truly impressive feat! CCHP will continue to offer affordable health coverage through Covered California in The much-anticipated outpatient center in Daly City will be opening in Meeting the needs of our patients and members, this new center will enhance access to primary and specialized care, diagnostics, wellness, prevention, and outpatient services. Lastly, the new hospital building has begun to take shape, becoming the beautiful medical facility that we envisioned for our community. The progress made thus far has been exciting and inspiring to us all, as we continue to work towards its completion in I am proud of our achievements this year and look forward to another year of growth and prosperity for our organization and community. New Hospital Construction Update 醫院新大樓施工進程報告 Excitement has filled the community as the New Hospital has taken its true form. This summer precast panels were placed on the front of the building, giving the community a glimpse of the building s first look. The construction team continues to place the concrete decks and the rooftop so that major equipment can be placed on the roof. This equipment is the infrastructure that will provide the building with quality, efficient systems for air flow (heating and cooling), hot and cold water, and emergency power. The next milestone will be closing in the building, when the construction team will seal up the building and remove the tower crane so that it is weathertight by the end of this year. In early 2015, construction on the building s interior will begin. The beginning of 2015 will also include various Make Ready projects for the existing hospital building. The new and existing buildings will be physically connected and their infrastructure systems will be integrated to become a larger, single hospital. 3 Chinese Hospital: Growing with the Community 東華醫院 : 與社區共同成長 Chinese Hospital will be opening a new outpatient center in Daly City next year. The center will offer a full range of outpatient services including primary care, multispecialty care, optometry, pharmacy, radiology, Chinese medicine and acupuncture. As Chinese Hospital s first comprehensive outpatient center, Chinese Hospital Outpatient Center represents the hospital s lasting commitment to providing quality care that is both culturally competent and accessible. Service expansion is not unprecedented for Chinese Hospital, which has a history of growing to meet the needs of its community. When Chinese residents began moving into other areas in San Francisco in the 1990 s, Chinese Hospital responded by opening its first outpatient clinic Sunset Health Services to provide greater access to primary care. Over the next 15 years Chinese Hospital continued to expand, opening clinics in the Excelsior district and Daly City in order to serve the growing communities in these areas. Support Health Services was established in Chinatown to help patients manage their chronic diseases, and East West Health Services was opened in the Financial District to improve access to Chinese Medicine and acupuncture. 4 Department Spotlight: Chinese Hospital Pharmacy 部門聚焦 : 東華醫院藥房 The pharmacy at Chinese Hospital has diligently served the community for over 25 years. Located in a cozy space in the main lobby of the hospital, the pharmacy serves as a direct health resource for patients and provides a range of inpatient and outpatient services. The pharmacy processes up to 800 prescriptions daily, with an average of 15,000 total prescriptions per month. They provide culturally competent care in Chinese and English, as well as in other languages through a language interpretation telephone service. The pharmacy also offers the option to customize Chinese translations on prescription bottles. In addition to filling prescriptions, the pharmacy 12-year veteran pharmacist Kevin Liu dispenses medication at Chinese Hospital. dispenses discharge prescriptions for hospital inpatients. The inpatient pharmacy operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to serve all units within the hospital and as a resource to Chinese Hospital s community clinics. Pharmacists also participate in weekly nursing rounds on the floor, perform daily medication therapy chart reviews, and provide consultation to both health care providers and patients alike. The pharmacy continues to grow in many ways to better serve its patients. As a way of expanding its services and caring for more patients, the pharmacy has begun assisting physicians with making dosing regimens for patients on special medications. When the New Hospital opens in 2016, the pharmacy will have a new facility which will provide patients with a larger waiting area and an enhanced experience. The pharmacy s outpatient services will also include a new, additional location at the Chinese Hospital Outpatient Center in Daly City (opening in 2015), making its services even more accessible. 5 Better Healthcare through Technology and Innovation 創新科技帶來卓越醫療服務 Chinese Hospital has been awarded funding by AT&T to create a new and exciting telemedicine program that will enhance quality and access to care. Telemedicine is the use of medical information exchanged from one site to another through electronic communications to improve a patient s clinical care and health status. It includes a variety of applications and services using two-way video, , smart phones, wireless tools and other forms of telecommunications technology. Telemedicine can be used to facilitate consultations with specialists in primary and emergency care settings, and may involve the use of live interactive video between physicians or transmission of patient health information. Telemedicine can also be used for remote patient monitoring, where devices collect and send patient data to providers to better monitor and care for their homebound patients. Chinese Hospital has launched telemedicine in the intensive care unit (ICU), and will be expanding the program to include post-discharge follow-up care. Through the telemedicine program, Chinese Hospital endeavors to improve access to quality care through innovative methods and technologies. When Wells Fargo & Company opened in 1852, the Chinese entrusted their wealth to the new banking and express company and were among the bank s first customers. For more than 161 years through financial panics, social injustice, Exclusion Acts, natural disasters, wars and political upheavals Wells Fargo and the Chinese people of San Francisco have remained loyal to each other. Today, the loyalty between the bank and the Chinese community remains stronger than ever. Over the years, Wells Fargo has funded Chinese Hospital s Hepatitis B program, a program that strives to eradicate the disease by providing free Hepatitis B screenings and vaccines. In 2013, Wells Fargo executives presented a $250,000 check to Chinese Hospital to support the construction of a new hospital in Chinatown. This much-needed facility will ensure that the community continues to receive quality healthcare in the years to come. Time and time again, when the Chinese Hospital or members of the Chinese American community needed support, Wells Fargo came through, said Rose Pak, Chair of the Fundraising Committee and Chinese Hospital Board Member. I want to thank Wells Fargo for their generous contribution to our hospital. Their support means we are closer to meeting our fundraising goals to pay for a new facility that will change and improve lives. It is great to appreciate the historical significance of relations based on friendship and a common community vision, like the one between Wells Fargo and San Francisco s Chinese community. Investing in Chinese Hospital is an investment in the health of San Francisco residents and families, said Mayor Ed Lee.
