14 The Vivid Life of Shirley Yu family Shirley Yu was born on Aug 22, 1978 in Tai Shan, China. She immigrated with her family to Boston, MA, in 1987, then came to New Orleans, LA in She received Gospel from Sister Shun-Ying Hui, then spread the Gospel to the whole family. The Yu s family was baptized on the same day to become a Christian family. As a young girl, Shirley took the responsibility as a mother to look after the much younger siblings while both parents were working hard outside. After the Yu s family started the family restaurant - Imperial Garden, she took on additional responsibility by helping out in the restaurant regularly, especially for all the communications and translations work because both parents had a language barrier while still being new in America. Shirley graduated from Our Lady of Holy Cross College with a Bachelor degree in Respiratory Care program in May 2009, and worked as a Certified Respiratory Therapist at Ochsner Hospital - Main Campus. She was always recognized by her teachers, colleagues, friends and patients as sweet, nice and kind person. She treated every patient as her family member and spread the gospel to them and prayed for them. Her most joyful moment was when she was staying with her beloved daughter Amy. Unfortunately, Shirley was first diagnosed with breast cancer on Oct 2009, since then she strongly believed in the healing power of the Words of God and walked in the path through the Faith of God. Just coincident, every time before any big annual festival such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter, she had to face up a surgery. However, as God would allow it, instead of lying in bed, she would strive to get up and catch up all the celebrations at the New Orleans Chinese Baptist Church (NOCBC) in order to thank and praise our Lord. After many rounds of life-threatening Chemotherapy, she recovered and decided to join the Choir. There is only one purpose, she wanted to sing unto the LORD a new song to praise God. She had treated NOCBC as her second home, and performed her first on stage 2010 Christmas celebration for the church, and so on in all big celebrations such as Christmas and Easter with Choir Orchestra for seven consecutive times. Regrettably, by the end of 2011, her breast cancer reoccurred. Shirley had to put down her respiratory therapist work again but she did not give up serving our Lord. She received half of the lifethreatening chemotherapy here in East Jefferson General Hospital, while the other half from MD Anderson in Houston. With the Grace of God, she didn t miss the 2012 Easter celebration performance. In June, she even moved with her mother to Houston for the torturing radiation therapy daily. But she 14
15 would drive back to New Orleans with her mother every Friday evening in order to catch up with NOCBC Sunday worship and by the way looking after her lovely daughter. Afterwards, she would drive back to Houston with her mother again after church to continue her treatment. Therefore, people didn t notice she was in Houston for all week long, because they would see her every Sunday in NOCBC. During her stayed in Houston, she never tired of spreading the gospel either to people visiting her or to other cancer patients sitting next to her while receiving treatment. She was doing exactly the same thing she was happy to oblige to do, as when she was receiving her treatment in New Orleans the first time in It was because she knew Jesus is the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Jesus. Shirley realized just singing wasn t enough to praise our Lord, therefore, she decided to go to reach out for people and teach all nations to praise Lord. As long as all her necessary treatments had implemented, she took just 2 months to recover, then she went to Thailand after Thanksgiving for a medical mission trip for about a week. She participated and helped in different medical disciplines such as ears, eyes, dental, oral hygiene and health education besides she was a Respiratory Therapist. And of course, singing in a crowd, reading Bible verses and praying for those whoneed medical attentions were everyday routine schedule. Every morning, she would wake up and walked along a wooden bridge on top of a calm lake, with the reflection of the pale red color haze just spread over the mountain tops. The freshness, peacefulness and inspiration from God would correlate herself with Jesus Christ that she would have peace despite she had walked through the valley of the shadow of death for the past couple years. The mission team travelled a couple locations to reach out those sicks and poors, witnessed how a missionary doctor in a local hospital with limited resources to treat a large crowd of people. During their stay, lines by lines of people had queued up to receive medical needs. They would also teach the 15 locals proper health hygiene and played with the youngs. The last day off from the medical service, they took a break to visit the famous River Kwai and other sight-seeing spots as rewards. That was a wonderful mission that she had ever imagined. They sow in tears shall reap in joy. It is more blessed to give than to receive. That medical mission trip was a strong evidence of her belief in His Word. From that time on, she was heavily involved as much as she can in Choir, Prayer meeting, Visits, Caring and Restaurant Fellowship. Because of her deep understanding as a family member with both parents working hard in a restaurant days and nights, in fact, it will be a pity for people working endlessly but without knowing our creator of the World. The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. Restaurant Fellowship always has a special place in Shirley s heart. One thing worth mentioning is that Restaurant Fellowship actually meets every Tuesday night after 10:00 while all restaurants closed. Shirley was always there, whenever her health permitted. Occasionally, by any means something happened in whichever restaurant, she would go visit and help, by the way, spread the gospel, invited them to Church and Restaurant Fellowship. She understood by continuing a Restaurant Fellowship, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, keeping united with all the people working in the restaurant, and spreading God messages to them will bring them hope, peace and comfort from their daily hard labor work. Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
16 However, the threat of breast cancer was given to Shirley like a thorn in her flesh. The breast cancer was diagnosed to come back the third time in July 2013, this time, the thorn didn t depart from her, in fact, it was a fatal one. Besides counting down her days, she still remained optimistic and tirelessly in spreading the gospel as much as she could. It was because she knew the end of people was the beginning of God. Jesus said unto her, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. She knew For when I am weak, then am I strong, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore, she kept continue doing what she had been doing to serve our Lord, making slide shows for Restaurant Fellowship gospel songs, singing and dancing in Tall Timbers retreat gospel camp and Mid-Autumn Festival for Chinese Overseas students respectively, hoping they would receive the gospel and helped bringing the gospel seed back to China. And for sure the 2013 Christmas celebration performance at NOCBC for the fourth straight years, but her body conditions were gradually deteriorating. Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion forever. It was blessed to note that after each of her serving to our LORD, her conditions would stable for a while. hospital on Good Friday. To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. Shirley has fought a good fight with cancer for four and a half years. She has finished her course and has kept the faith. She was surrounded by all her family members, singing her favorite gospel songs, reciting her favorite Bible verses, then rest in peace in God s hand on May 3, 2014 at the age of 35. Psalm 23 is Shirley most favorable Chapter, in fact, it guides and reflects her life, Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. Shirley only had one thought in her mind, that was: to live for God, I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living. I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD. I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people. Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints. Without letting anyone knew how serious her conditions were, she went to NOCBC to practice for 2014 Easter on Wednesday night shortly before the performance on Easter Sunday. Unfortunately, she couldn t make it this time for Easter performance, instead she was admitted to 16 We all miss her and fell blessed for her being relieved from the burden on Earth. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind, and thy neighbor as thyself. This do, and thou shalt live. It was blessings for Shirley, there were hundreds of friends to attend her Memorial Service and Funeral to pay final tribute or say thank you to her. Shirley has burnt up her life to light up for other people. As she always said, she would tell her story to become blessings for others. May we keep remembering her sweet smiles and touching hands, especially her strong bravery heart and never giving up attitude. For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday. They are as a sleep. We spend our years as a tale that is told. So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. God bless you all.
