Each offers convenient direct links to all major countries. Currently eleven stations are operating on the THSR line down Taiwan's western corridor: Taipei, Banqiao, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, Changhua, Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, and Zuoying (Kaohsiung). If you'd rather experience the carefree sensation of healthy beads of sweat running down your forehead, then you should visit the beach at Kending (Kenting) in southern Taiwan, where it is summer all year round. Don't worry too much about getting burned by the dazzling sun, as long as you take prudent precautions; the sun may not be as stinging hot as it seems. Furthermore, the country is surrounded by the ocean; and the ocean breezes, which are the reasons for Taiwan's humid weather, will surely make you completely forget the dry cold back home. If you are from a low-latitude country, you will certainly revel in the comfortable warmth of Taiwan's sun. The coolness that hangs in the air will be a welcome change from the simmering heat of your native country. You can do some hiking

5 in the mountains, immersing yourself in the beautiful trees of the forest while inhaling the pure and fresh air that blows across the island of Taiwan. Taiwan enjoys warm weather all year round. Weather conditions fluctuate during spring and winter, while in summer and autumn the weather is relatively stable. Taiwan is extremely suitable for traveling, as the annual average temperature is a comfortable 22 degrees Celsius with the lowest temperatures on the lowlands generally ranging from 12 to 17 degrees Celsius (54-63 Fahrenheit). Therefore, with the exception of a few mountain areas where some traces of snow can be found during winter, no snow can be seen in Taiwan. During raining season (March to May), continuously drizzling rain will sometimes fall on Taiwan. When visiting Taiwan during this period, remember to carry an umbrella at all time. Although it might seem romantic to have a stroll in the rain, it is no fun to travel when you're soaking wet. During the summer time (June to August), typhoons

6 sometimes approach or hit the country. We suggest you keep an eye on weather reports, because weather conditions are often severe and unpredictable when typhoons hit Taiwan. In addition, the roaring waves along the coast are not to be regarded as one of Taiwan's tourist scenes. During the autumn(september to November), you can wholeheartedly enjoy the cool and comforting weather, while Taiwan's relatively warm and short winters(december to February)are the time for you to appreciate the beautifully colored maple trees. The cold fronts that reach Taiwan sporadically are greatly favored by the island's hot-spring lovers. Paper money comes in NT$2000, NT$1000, NT$500, NT$200, and NT$100 denominations; Coins come in NT$50, NT$20, NT$10, NT$5 and NT$1 denominations. 9 Electricity and Plug 電 壓 與 插 頭 資 訊 來 源 : 交 通 部 觀 光 局 Taiwan uses electric current of 110 volts at 60 cycles, appliances from Europe, Australia or South-East Asia will need an adaptor or transformer. Normally it takes 24~48 hours to receive the letters/ parcels within Taiwan Main island. Most post offices are open during standard business hours during the week (8am to 5pm), and some branches open in the morning on Saturdays. Post Office (Chung Hua University branch) is located on the 3 rd floor of Administration Building. Opens 8am to 4:30pm from Monday to Friday, 12:30~1:30 pm lunch break. Or you can purchase at the company in Hsin Chu City center. To sign a Contract You will find the monthly paid contacts with different companies, please choose one that suits your requirement. When purchase (include buying a SIM card only or with cell phone), please bring your passport and ARC card to the telecommunications company. The photograph must be less than 6 months old. 2. The photograph must measure 45 x 35 mm in size (1.77 inches long x 1.38 inches wide) and show a close-up of the head and top of the shoulders. The chin to crown (crown is the position of the top of the head if there were no hair) must be between 32 mm and 36 mm (70 to 80 per cent of the vertical height of the picture). Head or any part of hair must not touch the frame of the photograph (female applicant's hair is permitted to touch the bottom frame of the photograph). 3. The photograph must be color neutral, with no ink marks or creases. 4. The photograph must show the subject facing square on and looking directly at the camera, with eyes open and clearly visible. A neutral expression (no smiling, mouth closed) and a natural skin tone are required. The photograph must have appropriate brightness and contrast. 5. There must be no hair across the eyes. Both edges of the face must be clearly visible. The photograph must not show the subject looking over one shoulder (portrait style) or with head tilted to one side or backwards or forwards. Ears, moles, birthmarks or scars must not be covered. An applicant with microtia is allowed to conceal the ears, but both edges of the face must be clearly visible.

13 6. The photograph must have a plain white background. The lighting must be uniform with no shadows or reflections on the face or in the background. The subject's eyes must not show red eye. 7. The photographs must be at high resolution and printed on plain, high quality photographic paper. The image must be clear, sharp and in focus. Resampling of the original image or alteration of the image's size before printing is not permitted. 8. Photographs taken with a digital camera must be high quality color and printed on photo-quality paper. The camera must be with at least 3 million pixels and set to "the highest quality and high saturation". Alteration of the digital image is not permitted. 9. If the subject wears glasses: 1) The photograph must show the eyes clearly with no reflection or glare in the glasses. Avoid tinted lenses (with the exception of the visually disabled). 2) Avoid heavy frames and make sure that the frames do not cover any part of the eyes. 10. Head coverings are not permitted except for religious or medical reasons, but facial features from bottom of chin to top of forehead and both edges of the face must be clearly shown. 11. We suggest packing some hometown snacks, sauces, etc. In case you feel homesick. Plug Adapter Name seal: A seal with your Chinese name is required for such things as opening an account or applying for files in Taiwan. Such a name seal can be

15 made in Taiwan (one seal costs roughly NT$ 50). If you already have a name seal, please bring it with you. International student medical insurance The insurance policy and procedure for claiming are shown as below: (1) Fee: NT$ 3,000 for 6 months. (2) Outpatient/Emergency treatment benefit: While this Policy is still effective, if the Insured suffers an illness or injury and receives (emergency) treatment at a hospital/clinic as an outpatient, the company will reimburse all medical expenses incurred. However, the payment of benefit shall not exceed the limit of 1000 NTD (per visit). (3) Go to a legal hospital/ clinic specified by the Department of Health, Executive Yuan, R.O.C. with this symbol.

23 (4) For Degree Students, please use your Chinese name shown on the ARC card when register at the clinic/ hospital. For Mandarin Program students, please use your English Name when register at the hospital in order to match the name joining to the insurance program. (5) Please collect 2 documents from clinic/ hospital: a. The original copy of payment receipt ( 收 據 ): You will get this document in every visit. b. Certificate of diagnosis in Chinese ( 診 斷 證 明 ): please apply when finish all the treatment for the same symptom. (6) Bring all (5) documents to International Office. We will assist you to fill in the application form. For information about Daily hospital room benefit and Hospital miscellaneous benefit, please refer to English articles. (Download) 2. National Health Insurance (NHI) According to the regulation, 6 months after receiving their ARCs, foreign students must join the National Health Insurance scheme. In the first 6 months, however, foreigners are not allowed to gain coverage under NHI. Each semester extends for 6 months (Sep Feb and Mar Aug). NHI costs NT $749 per month. Thus, for the second semester, you will pay NT $4,494 (749*6 months) in NHI premiums. (1) Applying for Coverage Foreign students who have been in Taiwan for 6 months since receiving their ARCs must apply for coverage under NHI. By doing this, go to the CHU International Office at I211 and bring the following documents with you: -Two photos -Photocopies of both sides of your ARC -Passport if you ever left Taiwan during this 6 months. (2) Canceling Coverage Graduates or people who are under the circumstances of deferring studies, discontinuing studies, or even being suspended from studying at CHU, are suggested to go to International Office. Please go to the International Office to cancel your NHI coverage and receive refunds for payment of NHI premiums.

24 (3) Suspending Coverage If you graduate, defer studies, or discontinue studies, please go to the International Office to suspend your NHI coverage. Foreign students who plan on going abroad for over 6 months should also suspend their NHI coverage for the amount of time which they intend to stay abroad. During this time, you will not be required to pay premiums. However, please note that if you return to Taiwan and continue studies before 6 months expire, you will be required to pay the monthly premiums back for the amount of time you were abroad. (4) Resuming Coverage To resume coverage after deferring or discontinuing studies, go to the International Office and apply for resumption of NHI coverage. (5) Medical Services After successfully applying for coverage under NHI, you will receive a NHI card. This card can be used at the vast majority of hospitals and medical clinics around Taiwan to receive a significant discount on the price of medical fees. 32 Other Information 其 他 訊 息 Work Permit 工 作 證 Before you work in Taiwan, you must first apply for a work permit. If you want to apply it, please go to International Office for the application Form. *Foreign students are not allowed to work without work permit. Required Documents and Fees: (1) Application form (2) Photocopies of both sides of your Student ID Card (3) Photocopies of your passport and both sides of your ARC (4) CHU Student Consent Form for Work Permit Application (5) Original receipt of payment from the post office at which the application fees (NT $100) were transferred. Note (1) The status of international students in Taiwan should be in accordance with the regulations of Ministry of Education. (2) For Mandarin Program students, you can apply after attending one year mandarin courses. (3) The period validity of a work permit is six months at most. (4) For applications made in the first semester, the work permit is valid until March 30th of the next semester; for applications made in the second semester, the work permit is valid until September 30th of the same year. (5) The maximum work hours are 20 hours per week, except during summer and winter vacation. (6) Bureau of Employment and Vocational Training has the right to revoke the permit if the applicants do not follow the regulations.
