11 Nursing care experience for a patient with spinal cord injury according to Watson theory Hui-Ya Liao 1 Wen-Miao Liu 2 1 Department of Nursing Hungkuang University 2 Department of Nursing, Central Taiwan University of Science and Technology Received 4 March 2011 ; accepted 22 June 2011 Abstract This case report is to apply the Watson's caring theory to do the holistic assessment and collect the client s related data for exploring the nursing experience of caring for the hopeless patient with posttraumatic spinal cord injury. The duration of nursing care for the patient was from August 9th to 20th, The clinical data was collected and assessed by observation, interview and listening techniques. According to the physical, psychological, social and spiritual aspects of the client, we found the client had three health problems such as ineffective airway clearance, physical activity dysfunction, and hopelessness. Using the ten caring measures of Watson s caring theory, we helped this case accept the fact of lower body paralysis after spinal cord injury caused by an accident and let him regain life's hope and behave more positive attitude to face his future life.
