Meanwhile, a series of changes have taken place wit hin China. This paper provides the generalization of the main contents and views of Regional Development Report of China, 2002 edited by L U Da2dao, et al. After explaining the influence of the strategic structural adjustment of national economy in regional aspect, it argues that since the early 1990s, influence of t raditional factors, such as mineral resources, water resources and t ransportation, has dropped gradually. Economic globalization not only has accelerated t he de2 velopment of national economy, but also has greatly changed t he patterns of regional develop2 ment. Wit h information increasingly becoming an important production factor and location fac2 tor, t he development of information2based indust ries has impelled t he regional economic dispari2 ty of China. Apart f rom t hese, science and technology, ecological environment and regional in2 novation system are becoming new factors which have greatly influenced regional development. Under t he comprehensive f unction of t he above2mentioned factors, new economic patterns have emerged in China, t hey can be summarized as follows. First, regional economic gap has ex2 panded in all aspect s. Bot h regional and zonal differentiation in indust rialization level has been more obvious in recent years. As several developed regions have entered t he middle stage of in2 dustrialization, the hinterland of China, on the whole, is still at the initial stage of industrial2 ization. Furt hermore, economic and technological gradient s have come into being wit hin na2 tional scale. Second, spatial st ruct ure of indust ries, especially t he manufact uring indust ries, which has come into being under planned economic system in t he past decades, has greatly shifted in China. For example, basic indust ries as raw materials indust ries have f urt her agglom2 erated to t he coastal regions of China ; energy indust ries especially power indust ry have shifted to t he Western China ; and t he fast development of characteristic agricult ure and high2efficient agricult ural production and high2quality agricult ural production has formed in several new areas for specific agricult ural productions. However, wit h t he new patterns in regional development, t here are serious inclinations in regional development which should gain much concern : most re2 gions should pay more attention to the development of basic industries and its modernization ; new and high2tech indust ries are not suitable to develop on a large scale ; and environmental state of several regions wit h a high2rate of economic growt h has seriously worsened.
